Mary-Kate is only in the trailer briefly, but I think it’s nice they include her, especially considering how small people say her part is.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are on the money again with a new collection

It’s difficult to know what to expect when faced with meeting a formidable pair of fashion designers barely into their early twenties who have also already made their mark as actresses and entrepreneurs. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have already accomplished far more than people two or even three times their age.
With their dishwater blonde hair, huge saucer eyes and much-copied layers of clothing and accessories, they’re surprisingly modest, candid and astute about the multitude of projects that bear their names. From apparel, home furnishings, cosmetics and home videos to feature films and books, the girls have many passions. But fashion is top of their list.
Visiting Hong Kong for the first time recently, Mary-Kate and Ashley launched their latest fashion endeavour at Lane Crawford – the contemporary clothing line Elizabeth & James. The new line, named after their siblings, is their third foray into the fashion world.
Their first, the affordable Mary-Kate and Ashley brand of clothing for tweens, was launched when the girls were only 11 and was a hit at Wal-Mart stores across the US. The twins, who at the age of six started the Dualstar Entertainment Group with their now ex-manager Robert Thorne, decided to add fashion to their portfolio to appeal to the largely ignored tween market.
“When we were doing our movies and television show back then, we had to take adult designer clothing and cut it down to our size,” says Mary-Kate, the chattier of the two.
“We received a lot of comments and letters from girls our age wanting to know where we got our clothes, so we knew that starting the line was the right move to make.”
“The truth was that the clothes we were wearing didn’t exist for people our age and size,” adds Ashley. The girls took that as an opportunity to immerse themselves in design and slowly began to learn about the business.
“We were very hands-on, and are very hands-on, with anything that has our names and faces on it,” says Mary-Kate. “We know what we like and when people want, appreciate or desire the things we create ourselves, the only way to do that is to be hands-on.”
Designing clothing that they also wanted to wear, the girls learned the basics of fabric, cut and fit. They would experiment with their own clothes as well as mixing and matching other pieces.
However, despite the success of the Mary-Kate and Ashley clothing line, the twins did not cement their credibility as designers until the launch of The Row in 2006.
Started by Ashley (Mary-Kate was brought on board a few months later), The Row was conceived as a result of her quest to find the “perfect T-shirt”. The high-end line, which is a collection of classic and sleek knits made from luxurious fabrics, was immediately picked up by department stores such as Barney’s New York and Maxfield’s in Los Angeles, and celebrities such as Kate Hudson, Gwyneth Paltrow and Penelope Cruz are fans.
Despite the fact that The Row is growing quickly, Ashley, who seems to be as in tune with the business side as the design side, is adamant that it remains a small and controllable entity.
“The Row, unlike Elizabeth & James, is not licensed to another company so my sister and I have full control over both the creative and business aspects,” she says.
“As a business, it is important to grow but you can’t grow too fast. Having said that, you still have to keep up with the times so it’s a lot of hard work striking that balance. Hopefully, in the future I’ll have more people on board so I can concentrate on design, but right now I’m really focused and I know what I want to do and I love it, so what more can I really ask for?”
Elizabeth & James came after the twins were approached by L’Koral Industries to create a contemporary line neither as exclusive as The Row nor as mainstream as Mary-Kate and Ashley.
“When we were first approached, we sat down with their design team to see if we were on the same page. We designed some things together and we loved each other’s sense of style, then things started coming together,” says Ashley.
“I am probably more involved with Elizabeth & James than The Row and I enjoy the collaborative effort that a licence deal involves,” says Mary-Kate. “To me, creativity is collaborative and so we work together as a team going through fabrics, concepts, silhouettes and stories to create a time and place for each collection.”
Mary-Kate also relies on the design team at Elizabeth & James to help her transform things she finds inspiring into tangible concepts for each collection.
“I bring in items like curtains, flowers, pieces of furniture, and so on,” she says.
“Basically, anything I find inspiration from, as being creative means you are inspired by anything and everything and you bring that to life. And I have a great team to interpret what I’m thinking.”
Unlike The Row, which is pitched at mature, sophisticated women, Elizabeth & James is aimed at a younger clientele more willing to experiment with trends. Because each line appeals to a different market, the girls find it easy to keep them separate.
Elizabeth & James is a mixture of uptown and downtown elements, masculine and feminine tailoring, as well as a mixture of vintage and modern silhouettes.
“When you understand the core of what you are doing, where it stems from, the silhouettes, who you are selling to, it’s easy to step back and design for each season and collection,” says Mary-Kate.
“The first two seasons were hard because I found myself protecting both collections,” adds Ashley.
“But over time, you start figuring out your brand message and from there you figure out your customer. These two lines have two very different customers and there’s no room for a crossover. You have to know the woman you are designing for and we do.”
As the twins approach their 22nd birthdays this year, both are also working on projects outside fashion. Mary-Kate continues to act, having recently appeared on the television show Weeds as well as the film The Wackness, which recently won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival. Ashley is focusing entirely on their business and creative endeavours, which includes the publication of a coffee-table book entitled Influence this autumn, which features interviews with such figures as Karl Lagerfeld, Christian Louboutin, Terry Richardson, Jack Pierson and Lauren Hutton.
“Writing the book was a trip because the process of interviewing the different people ended up meaning that I was able to have great conversations with people I look up to,” says Mary-Kate.
“The reason I wanted to write the book is because it’s a different creative outlet and I want to be able to influence my generation, as well as those above and after me, about the arts in general,” says Ashley.
“It’s about influencing other people to go and do great things and to show them that they can do it. You just have to be focused, driven and know what you want.”

I saw the movie at an advanced screening in Boston. I really liked it, and she looked amazing in it. Her part IS really small, but I would say if you are just going to see it just for MK it still would be worth it.

I wonder why she wasn’t at the screening with the others in New York (it was on Sat).
I alway wonder with sightings whether they have got them right I guess it could be either but Mk is definately in NY.

i saw ashley olsen today getting coffee and smoking a cig. i passed her walking on the street at the corner of 14th and 6th ave around 11:00am she looked really cute…huge glasses, messyish hair, baggy sweater/zip up and skinny jeans with sandals. i thought she looked really pretty. ive seen her a few times around that area but i wasnt 100% sure it was her till today
