Video of Angelina Jolie talking Iraq with CNN

Hot on the heels of the news that Angelina Jolie is in Iraq, CNN has a video up of Angie discussing the current refugee situation in that country and how this is the moment to really help them and make critical changes in a place that is so important to that region of the world and to the world overall.

I was intrigued by the way that she said she’s not sure she’s the best person to talk about this other than she gets to talk to the troops who have been over there so long and who have seen the changes occurring, no matter how small. Even with all her experience with the UNHCR, Angelina knows there are others who know more about the refugee crisis simply because they live alongside it (like the troops) or right in the middle of it (the UNHCR field workers). Some might interpret that as insecurity but to me it just shows how humble Angelina still is.

She also talked about the funding issues facing the UNHCR right now, that they’re only half funded and they won’t be able to build enough new houses as quickly as they want to because of it. She also mentioned that in traveling the world and visiting countries like Cambodia there are still so many ongoing problems and said that it’s partly because they missed that one critical moment to make a big, positive change. The point Iraq has reached now is that same critical moment for governments to step up and care and help, and maybe through education and rebuilding they can avoid seeing those same problems hit Iraq as well.

Angelina also mentioned that there are about 3 million refugees right now – that’s a huge number, one that is so hard to wrap your head around, millions of people unable to live in their own homes, some of them not even living in their own country. It’s startling to say the least.

Great video, enjoy!

(Thanks Gabriella)

Each of us has the right to choose who to admire: on one hand, a person who exemplifies SUBSTANCE, on the other hand, one who personifies SUPERFICIALITY.

Substance is when a person has done something good with her life & becomes useful to others. Things that matters is what is important & urgent. She has a sense of purpose.

Superficiality is when a person always think of how she looks & so conscious of what people may say . She spends so much time, energy & money just to look good. In other words, it’s always about herself instead of others. Trivial things is what matters to her.

I am proud to admire someone who is full of substance than someone who is superficial.

she is just beautiful and she isn’t even wearing any make up.

i do hope the government will give full support over the funds. it’s very important because the UN needs it to be able to build houses for the refugees. UN is doing their best but it’s up to the government now. and i do hope she could make a difference by voicing out the situation in Iraq.

  3. casey

absloutely right. it was the western leader like blair and bush that decided to demolish iraq for no real good reason, it’s the least western governements could do it gives extra funds to people like UNHCR to help re-build what they destroyed IMO

I hope everyone realizes when she says “it’s up to the government now” she means the Iraq gov’t. And as to funding for the UN, it is all government’s in the world that need to dish over funds. The reason they are low in funds is because the US supplies most of the funds and with their financial troubles they have had to cut back. It is time for the rest of the world to step up and support this organization (ie Europe, Russia, Canada), and stop relying on the US to do every thing.

Also did Mad go to Iraq to or did go some where else?

  5. Phoebe

she´s gorgeous!!! you are right Sherry she is so humble and that makes her even more great!
@neer: yep we have the right to admire whoever we like. the problem is that we have to judge celebs on the basis of our phantasy not on the basis of facts because we don´t know them. in Angies case we can be sure though because she lets her actions speak for themselves.

  6. casey

angelina doesn’t mean the iraq government, she means all governments around the world, including the U.S.
the U.S should give the most as it was the U.S who demanded to invade iraq in the 1st place, why should the rest of the world pay for the U.S wrecking other countries?

and maddox probably stayed back in jordan, where angelina stayed too and then flew in and out of iraq on the same day.

aaahhh Angie gets so moved in these situations- can you blame her! I love to see her with children, even though these children need so much help with the very basic things (our countries provide); I can clearly tell she is near to tears. I feel proud of her for putting herself ‘out-there’; she’s so brave cos she knows it’s going to upset her dreadfully. Must be so difficult for her to be there knowing what her own kids enjoy in their lives.
I cant even find the words to express how much I admire her; I can only think of applauding and blowing her a kiss.
Thanks Sherry for finding all this out; it’s amazing footage, incredible.
Brad must be so very proud of her – wonder whether he’s shown the children this vid??

Neer, I totaly agree with you. Angie is full of substance but not superficial, the reason why I am a fan of her & of course Brad. So proud of Angie for doing something not so much like us will do, despite of her wealth, being famous, & being a mother of 6, she still finds time to dedicate her hours to boosts the soldiers morale in Iraq not thinking about her own safety . I’m sure the soldiers were touched by her gestures.God bless Angie & her family. God bless the soldiers in Iraq & Afghanistan.

  9. gena

Wonderful!Always proud of Angie. She definitely is dedicated to helping families and supporting our troops. I agree that the US and the other governments need to help this country get back on it’s feet and help the citizens and families of this country. The children are so important to Angie and I agree that the children will be the future leaders of this country in the future.

“Another great video. If Angie looked tired she had a reason to be. She put a hell of a lot of energy into doing photoshoots with anyone who wanted a picture and you could see how much it meant to the troops that she was willing to do that. I even had to laugh because she was shaking hands and then one guy (a brutha, natch) decided he was going for the hug…got one…and then EVERYBODY wanted a hug. LOL.”

  14. Tina-BAMZSPKVJP4ever

  16. CHRISTY

I saw it on the news at work and I shouted that’s my girl. My co-workers were all saying that they love her. I am so proud of her, so gracious,so full of goodness,so full of love. She left her own kids at home (with dad of course) to give voice to the kids who do not have one. Please support Sherry BLOGTON AND UNCHR.

  17. joliepittfanatic

Actually, I’ll bet Mad went with her to Iraq. Remember, she just recently said that she’s been taking Maddox with her on some of her humatarian missions. Also, there’s no solid proof that Angie ever stayed in Jordan before heading to Iraq.

  18. casey

    ^
angelina would never stay in iraq over-night. too dangerous. angelina always stays outside iraq and then travels inside iraq for 1 day and then leaves the country of iraq back to either syria or jordan.

  19. stratoula

Thanks for the video,Sherry!!!It was very touching! And very honest! You can clearly see how much Angie truly cares about refugees!!!
    She is a wonderful person!!!

AJ meant that it was time for the Iraq gov’t to step up and take responsibility for their country and refugees, to provide homes.
Also if you look though out history this is not just a American war, the problems in the middle east have been going on for a long time and every world power through out history has had a hand in the mess the middle east has become including England, France, Spain etc. when I mean go though history I mean go back 100’s of year. The UN agreed that Iraq should be attacked/ invaded and just because it didn’t turn out the way everyone wanted doesn’t mean they can’t take responsibility and pretend the didn’t agree. They may have gone about it the wrong way but it still had to be done, before the situation got any worse. US didn’t wreck the country it was trying to help it get out from under a dictatorship and become democratic, something every country in the world should want all countries to be.
The world can’t keep blaming the US for all their problems, someday the US is just going to close it’s doors and turn its back on the rest of the world and then we will all be in trouble.
OK I’m done ranting, and just for the record I am not an American.

Casey- Good point! I still think she brought Mad to Iraq with her for the brief time she was there, though. :)
