Vonzell Solomon Detained For Gun in Bags

Vonzell Solomon2486.JPG American Idol season four finalist, Vonzell Solomon, was detained at the Southwest Florida International Airport on Tuesday after an unloaded gun was found in her luggage.  Vonzell, who has a permit for the weapon, reportedly forgot it was in her bags until it was found at a U.S. Airways checkpoint.

Despite having the permit, the gun was confiscated because she was not allowed to bring it into an airport.  She did receive a notice to appear in court on a misdemeanor charge but, hopefully, it won’t be a major deal: “When it’s obvious that it’s a mistake and there is a permit, we really try to work with people,”  said Lee Port Authority spokeswoman Barbara-Ann Urrutia.

I believe this was an honest mistake so I hope things turn out okay for Vonzell.  Do any of you have a permit for a weapon?  I personally don’t but I’m curious now.  I’m surprised she carries a gun.

Well Jeanne, it’s sad to say but this is South Florida. Although the crime and immigration rate where she lives isn’t as bad as the Miami area the Florida gun rules are a little different. I remember they passed something saying everyone can carry a concealed weapon (with a license of course) and you can shoot someone if you feel threatened. I’m not sure if that has changed but I don’t think so. I think it was a bad decision to make since the immigration rate down here is outragous. I mean we have boat loads of Cubans and Hatians “slipping” in on a daily basis and watching the news you have to wonder how these people that arrive here get guns so fast and can’t speak a lick of English. I don’t mind them being able to stay in this country, I think it’s really great considering where they are coming from but when you start doing bad things right away then that has folks second guessing and protecting themselves more. It’s a shame really that we have to get guns b/c of folks that want to come to this country and think it’s cool to hurt us b/c we are Americans. I’ve witnessed on many occasions people from these other countries saying how they hate Americans b/c of unrelated reason or another and try to hurt us… So it’s a catch 22 really. I don’t blame her for having one really, I have applied for mine as I have seen the crime against women and children getting way out of hand so protection is a must here and in this country period in my opinion.
