The 2006 film Superman Returns was a disappointment to Warner Bros. that company execs have decided to put both Superman: Man of Steel and Batman vs. Superman on hold. Instead, Warner Bros. wants “the next pack of superhero movies to be bathed in the same brooding tone as The Dark Knight.”
I first read this story at Superhero Hype that Warner Bros. has confirmed a reboot of “Superman“, similar to the strategy used to reboot Ang Lee’s Hulk. Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov spoke to Wall Street Journal and explained that he wants to explore the evil side of the superheroes. “We’re going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it,” he says.
What exactly does it mean to have a “brooding/dark” Superman? Someone with attitude? Several SHH readers commented that The Dark Knight is dark, because Batman is. That’s not how fans know Superman to be. Unless of course you’re talking Superman on red or black Kryptonite, but then that would be Smallville.
Movies featuring Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, Green Lantern and Flash are in development, so I wonder if these would also have similar darker tones as The Dark Knight. Warner Bros. plans on releasing comic-book films in the next few years, including a third Batman film, the rebooted Superman, and two other DC Comics characters.

Superman Returns was disappointing for the same reason the first Hulk film was- virtually no action. Mix in a real supervillain for the second one, not a darker tone and they’ll be OK.
You cannot make Superman darker. It’s not who he is. He is the good guy no matter what.
You cant change the reason why people love him. Keep Superman REAL, change everything else if you want!!!
You want to know why superman returns didn’tdo well….ok it s*cked big time.
It’s because they didn’t have a solid story, superman was away for approx 20 years because he went on a holiday back on krypton but because the travelagency doublebooked him he had to go to jupiter for 5 years before he got to krypton; bollocks!!!!
What they should have done is to kill off lois lane in the beginning of the movie, by a bankrobber or streetthug name your pick, which in turn causes superman to go in exile because he doesn’t believe in it anymore, instead of twenty make it 5 years later and sudden lois lane appears in the fortress of solitude where superman is in exile and he finds out that it was all a plot of Lex Luthor….tada i made this up in 5 minutes it’s a rotten shame that hollywood writers nowadays can’t do better…
jimbo, where did you get that Superman was away for 20 years? Here’s a list of reasons I think haven’t been mentioned about why nobody liked Superman Returns:
1. It wasn’t Christopher Reeves. He was the one and only Superman most of us know.
2. The kid; what’s up with that? How do you work a story around Superman having a kid?
3. Lois Lane should have been cast differently. The one they got was too young and not jaded enough.
4. Kevin Spacey tried too hard to be Gene Hackman. He did a decent job though with the character.
5. Probably the biggest reason is that most people don’t like Superman as much. He’s “too good” because he can do everything. Other superheroes have a few abilities and are masters of how to use them, plus they can be defeated much easier than Superman. He’s also got no dark side. Period. He’s a good guy, through and through, unlike Batman or Wolverine, and he doesn’t have a flashy side like Iron Man or Johnny Flame. He was created at a time when good moral character was more important, and that’s survived throughout the decades.
Talk about WARNER BROTHERS making everyone evil… Now this is really something… SUPERMAN is a good guy and making him Evil is just something that WARNER BROTHERS enjoys too much… It just shows this company’s dedication to the DARK SIDE… Oh well… Goodluck to your DARK SUPERMAN… It will surely rot in hell as well as WARNER BROTHERS EVIL PLANS to subliminally inject Satan’s mind…
If the Character Superman had a sophisticated alternative power such as predicting the bad guy’s next move. meaning, Superman has to be standing within so many feet from the bad guy, but not even knowing who this bad guy is since when Superman visualizes a vision , it just kinda hits him as he is investigating a crime.
He never sees clear shots in the Vision, he just sees a haze effect, he can be sanding somewhere and the vision hits him and he feels the feeling of what stress the bad Guy feels in the acts of crime as it is being committed but at the same time his body goes through changes, this energy takes a lot of his energy to even stay standing up or walking, it kind of hits him in a mild effect like the Cryptonite hits him so he cannot stay into the thought for very long, he has to pull himself out of it or it will knock him out .
Also the visions occur only when he is near the Bad Guy(s) and the Vision doesn’t have a time frame in it, it just shows a slow motion cloudy video like but through the eyes of one of the bad guys of how they are actually seeing reality through their own eyes during an actual crime they are committing at that time, But see, Superman, he cannot tell wether the time line is actually in the present time he is in, meaning the Vision he experiances could of either taken place up to one week prior to him actually envisioning it . Or it could be of what’s to come that didn’t happen yet, it will only be reveiled as the writers write the script wether Superman envisioned it during the actual time frame of present time on that minute .
Like for example, if Superman was standing in a bank, and the bank was about to be robbed, and he was in there conducting Business in his bank account, while waiting in line, one of these visions sneak up on him, he realizes what is happening but it is like a more of a memory than like a actual present event. He still sees what he is doing, standing in line, people around in the bank but also at the same time simultaneously thought, he has a vision memory flash and the reality in it shows the to come events or past tense events in the bank there or across the street. Remember, he has to be near the Bad Guy in order to read the Vision of that bad Guy.
Another change that takes effect while the vision he experiances is that his “S” on his inner shirt changes from red to Purple then illuminats a little but not so much so whereas anyone outside the cover shirt will notice, they only notice the way he acts, and his shirt, during this change begins to give off a little radiant heat , but only a little and warms him up , though if he continues to concitrate hard enough, he will colapse and the shirt will then go cold originally as it was and the colors will revert back to normal.
So he must not concentrate too long on the Vision and thus he just takes in a little information and just enough to give him an idea of either what’s been or what’s to come. Only he will be able to put those puzzle pieces together as his investigation moves forward. This New Ability will attract new Viewers as Superman never has said powers. He did have basic ones similar, if a woman was in trouble or a child was in danger, But not like this. Modify this idea and run it and see what you think.
