Wow, this takes me back. When I was writing the piece about the ‘real’ Stars Hollow, I got to revisit the ‘Welcome to the Gilmore Girls‘ feature that’s a part of the Season 1 DVD. It explores the creation of Gilmore Girls and its initial casting. With interviews and commentary by the actors and by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, it’s a great reminder of the wit and charm that won us over as forever fans of Gilmore Girls. Enjoy!
And isn’t it great to look back and see how the casting choices went? I don’t think this show would have taken off without its cast – from Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel to each beloved character brought to life by the talent behind its actors – Kelly Bishop, Edward Herrmann, Melissa McCarthy, Scott Patterson and the dozens upon dozens of others.
And aren’t you glad there was a Luke and not a Daisy? ;)
Oh gosh, and seeing Alex Borstein’s screen test as Sookie? I’m sure it would have been great, but I can’t imagine anyone other than Melissa McCarthy as our Sookie!

Yeah, that is weird that Alex Borstein almost played Sookie. Of course she was in the pilot anyway.
Did everyone know that Alex Borstein’s husband in real life is infact Jackson?!
I totally love Sookie just as she was. No one could be Sookie, but Sookie (Melissa McCarthy).

I wasn’t a big fan of Alex Bornstein when she was on the show so I’m glad MM landed the role of Sookie.
I love this feature on the DVD set. I just wish there was more of Scott Patterson and less of D. Sutcliffe…
When I watch it I always feel kind of nostalgic and frustrated too because you can’t think then that the show would take the direction it took the last two years…

It’s kinda interesting to see who might have played certain characters. I like who they ended up with though. I’m glad they didn’t go with Alex Bornstein as Sookie, I prefered her as Drella and Miss Cecile. There was someone else who’s name I forget who was orginally suppose to play Dean aswell. He wasn’t bad but I also liked Jared better.
Oh and the city they said was ” Washington Depot”.

deffinitly with you all on the melisa mccarthy thing – think she is great in samantha who as well only proble is i keep waiting for the rest of the cast of gg to appear.
I agree that its a shame there arent more extras.Has any one seen the seinfeld DVDs – the are totally loaded with extras and trivia and voice overs for practically every episode – would love to see something like that for GG.
Thanks SB for the info about jackson and Alex – I bet that caused some fun in their house lol

Welcome, Suzi. I keep thinking how it might have been with Alex playing Sookie because in real life she is married to Jackson. Would they have worked well together? I can’t really imagine anyone playing Sookie as well, or someone being as cute with Jackson. But, Alex is his “real” wife. Kinda weird.
