Were the Gilmores Blinded by Wealth?

Emily & Richard Gilmore have always thought very highly of the Huntzberger family. In ‘We’ve Got Magic To Do‘, Emily goes so far as to remark, “There’s people, then there’s the Huntzbergers.” It’s like Emily is putting the Huntzberger family higher up the social ladder than the Gilmore family. And yet, when Emily & Richard finally realize that the Huntzbergers mistreated Rory, they seem offended that their “precious family” wouldn’t accept Rory.

When Emily confronts Shira Huntzberger, she is told to consider their discrepancies. That there’s “your money, then there’s our money”, to which Emily reminds Shira that she married “up” into the Huntzberger family herself.

So, just how blind were Richard & Emily? How much did wealth cloud their thoughts? Could it be that they were more willing to forgive Rory of her mistakes, of dropping out of Yale, because she was dating Logan? Why were they so ready to believe everything was a misunderstanding?

Rory herself seems to realize that she may not have dropped out of Yale if it weren’t for what Mitchum said. She seems near to regretting her decision, to basing it on the opinion of someone she clearly dislikes. Perhaps she too was blinded by his wealth and power.

Now, seeing Rory after her successful DAR event, Richard looks disappointed in her. Like having Mitchum to blame for crushing Rory made her dropping out of Yale so much worse than it was before. Which is silly, don’t you think? Why is he only now seeing it for the mistake it clearly was?

I felt like knowing what Mr. Huntzberger did made it worse because then he couldn’t even pretend it was just Rory doing what she felt was best for her, it was Rory being weak and not trusting herself.

Off the topic — this DAR function looks fabulous. I love the theme, Andrews Sisters and all.

Richard and emily are shallow beyond belief. Money and education and appearances are all that counts. Like when they told lorelai it was embarrasing to tell their friend she was pregnant at 16 rather than wondering how hard it must have been for her and what they could do to help. Rory deffinately got the money/shallow gene from her grand parents.

I am not a big fan of chris but at least money doesnt seem to rule him. Even when he got his inheritance he wasnt all that interested in it.

We know Richard comes from money but I would love to know emilys back ground.

I’ve always liked the characters of Richard & Emily but I despised their attitude to money and rich people.
Because Logan was from good breed and rich they assumed he was perfect for Rory. I always thought he was a jerk.
Same thing with Christopher. They couldn’t wait for Lorelai to get back him while every time he broke her heart. Just because he had money and represented something on the social scale they approved him.
Most of all, I hated how they treated Luke, especially at their vows renewal or when Emily finds out that Richard took him golfing, in front of all their friends. She says he’s not good for Lorelai and can’t be a proper stepfather for Rory while he has always been more present and more a father figure to her than her real dad ever was.

Lorelai managed to escaped this shallowness because she had to work hard at a very young age.
Rory, on the other hand, picked up on her grandparents for this part. She loved money, the status going with and everything it could bring. I’ve always been disappointed by her attitude because it was really not what her mother had taught her.

Crazy as it sounds, I think Rory really believed she despised money as much as her mom since she saw herself as her Mom’s alter ego. However she was either delusional or in denial about that since her actions took advantage of money whenever it was available and to her advantage to accept it, be the source of money her mom, Chris, Logan, or her grandparents.
