J.K. Rowling has just launched the new site Pottermore, with the cryptic message you see above. And on her YouTube page is the message that in about 6 days (that would be next Wednesday, the 22nd), the Harry Potter author will be making a big announcement. We know that all this mystery pertains to Rowling’s new book, but so far there’s been no word on what it will be.
For years there have been rumors that Rowling would write a Harry Potter prequel, though her rep denies it. Personally, I’ll always hold out for a Marauders-era trilogy; they’re some of the best passages from the books! But assuming that it’s not going to be set in the wizarding world, what other genres could Rowling tackle?
My first instinct was to say young adult fiction, since obviously she knows how to keep readers enticed with characters who age from 11 to 17 — mostly because the core of her fanbase themselves were about the same age and identified more strongly with the characters.
The thing is, Rowling’s strength lies more in the texture of the worlds she creates: Ask any Potterhead, and they’re more likely to answer that it’s Platform 9 3/4 and Defense Against the Dark Arts and the Horcruxes that stand out the clearest in their memories of the series. The best genre for Rowling, then, would probably be science fiction: That brain of hers could come up with breathtaking feats of technology; she could apply the details she applied to the various wizarding schools in Goblet of Fire to far-off planets.
Or if she wanted to fuck with Stephenie Meyer, she could try her hand at vampires. You know, when I first read Chamber of Secrets, I was convinced that the deathly-pale Draco Malfoy was a bloodsucker, so I’d be convinced.
Which genre do you think Rowling’s new book will be set in? Or do you think her annoucement is about something entirely different?

I hope its something like the 2nd generation (as in Harry’s, Ginny’s, Ron’s, and Herminonie’s kids) at howarts!
I need to know!!! I need Wednesday now! I think I’m in school when it’s released though so I might not find out for ages afterwards and I’m like worrying that it might only be their for an hour or something and I’ll never find out! That’s not gonna happen but still.
I just read Wizards & Witches by KJ Clarke on the Harper Collins Authonomy site, is this the follow up book by JK or is it a very good copy, because it is 650 pages and the writing style tells me it is JK what do you think?
someone on fb found this:
Providing multiple-user access to a global computer information network; providing on-line chat rooms and electronic bulletin boards for transmission of messages among users in the field of general interest; providing on-line communications links which transfer the web site user to other local and global web pages; providing on-line facilities for real-time interaction with other computer users concerning topics of general interest
it’s from trademarkmania, and warnerbros trademarked it!
It’s prob an encyclopaedia
The official annoucement said it was definitely NOT a book.
I am hoping the announcement is that she’s challenging Stephenie Meyer to a duel, personally.
Lilit!!! I was thinking the exact same thing!!
Yet another reason I like you, Lindsay.
I CAN’T WAIT TIL NEXT WEDNESDAY!!!
