This news is the biggest meteor to bombard Smallville.
Beyond Michael Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk leaving Smallville at the end of season 7, the news of Smallville creators and executive producers Alfred Gough & Miles Millar are leaving Smallville is, to say the least, earth shaking.
Kryptonsite has a copy of the open letter that Gough and Millar wrote to their fans. There was no specific mention about the reason for their departure, only this -
“After much heartache and debate we have decided it is time for us to move on…We are incredibly proud of our work on this show. We achieved what we set out to do. We never compromised our vision.
When Gough and Millar set out to create Smallville, they had one vision for Clark Kent – no flights, no costume. And my first thought with their departure was “So will Clark finally fly?”
That’s what all Smallville fans have been clamoring, to see Clark Kent embrace his destiny. The past seven seasons we have seen him struggle with his identity and purpose. The season is almost over and yet, Clark still hasn’t made up his mind and still hasn’t grown up, really, into a semblance of the Superman we know and love from comics and the old movies. Sometimes I do ask myself, “What is this Clark waiting for?!”
Well, maybe the departure of Gough and Millar, shocking as it may be, would open the gate to getting more of Superman into Clark.
And just like the first meteor shower that brought the young boy Kal El to earth and changed the lives of Smallville, the exit of Smallville’s original creator is expected to change the face of this show.
Let’s hope so, right? After all, season 8 is the final chapter.
