What's in a (TV Show) Name?

Interesting article over at Canada.com on the topic of TV show names. I found it because, of course, Grey’s Anatomy was mentioned and I like to stalk the Internets for random bits of Grey’s goodness. Especially in these lonely, sad summer months without new episodes to obsess over.

The article’s author, Alex Strachan, goes on to list a few TV show’s and comments on their name.

Strachan has this to say on Grey’s Anatomy:

Take Grey’s Anatomy. Now there’s a clever title. It’s a medical show, see, but it’s got nothing to do with the textbook Gray’s Anatomy. It’s about this relationship-obsessed surgical intern, and her name is Grey. Meredith Grey.

Yes, it is a very clever name. Unfortunately, a lot of people get it wrong and type ‘Gray’ when they mean to type ‘Grey’, but that’s okay, because the name, like its writing, is smart, sharp, and appropriate.

Anyway, that’s the only part of the article that’s relevant to Grey’s Anatomy (News), but the whole thing is pretty interesting if you’re into the psychology of TV show names.

So step on over to Canada.com and read ‘A TV show by any other name gets cancelled’ if you’re so inclined.

What do you think of the name ‘Grey’s Anatomy’? Do you think it should’ve been called something else? I think I heard somewhere that at some point or another it was supposed to be called something generic like ‘Interns’ … but I could be imagining that, so don’t quote me.

It was originally going to be called Complications.

No, I saw an interview with Shonda Rimes, and she said the original title was “Surgeons”.

    Yawn!

It was originally going to be called COMPLICATIONS but apparently that did not test well. Grey’s Anatomy is a good title although before I started watching the show I assumed that Hollywood had spelt the name wrong since I do have my well worn copy of the real Gray’s Anatomy in my library. I hope that they make Derek out as a nice guy in the end since I keep getting compared to him by patients and friends!
