What's Next For Tyra and ANTM?

I always thought that Tyra’s talk show was her priority and she was en route to become the next Oprah. America’s Next Top Model went downhill once the talk show was launched and it’s shooting schedules were built around Tyra’s talk show schedules. One bonus what that the talk show gave the contestants a platform to discuss personal issues, revel in their wins and reunite to chat about what went down once the cameras stopped rolling.

America's Next Top Model

Now that the talk show is over, a lot of questions are being raised as to what this means for America’s Next Top Model.

It means one of two things:

1) Tyra is going to refocus some of her energy back into the show that made her a reality television force. The show (and it’s watchability) has slipped considerably over the past few cycles. Even a gimmicky season like the shorty season couldn’t pull it out of it’s slump. It’s still CW’s flagship show, but it needs a serious facelift. We know that the show will be around for at least two more cycles, as Jay Manuel recently tweeted “ANTM will continue. We just finished cycle 14 and 15 is planned.” Nigel Barker’s contract doesn’t expire until Cycle 16. Could Tyra restore this show to it’s early season glory?

2) ANTM is not a priority and will continue to slide. Tyra announced the creation of Bankable Studios, a company where she will focus on film projects. She also has the second season of True Beauty on her plate, and — let’s face it — her non-ANTM television projects were pretty weak. If she devotes all her talk show time to other television projects, it’s possible she can again capture the magic that made ANTM so great.

What do you think?

I think that this is a very bad career move for Tyra. She wanted a talk show for a long time and she got one, with great ratings and now she abandons it. And it makes me wonder how much she really cares about ANTM, I think scenario #2 is most likely to happen. True Beauty sucks, the beautiful life was cancelled, and I believe she had another show that was also cancelled. Why films? Cause there’s more money in it? What about the fans of her 2 successful shows (ANTM & the Tyra show) ?

I think she will do one more year of ANTM.(cycles 15 and 16). I think its become tired and there is not a lot of new ideas–at least as far as the challenges and photo shoots. I can’t imagine that Tyra ends her talk show without having something else up her sleeve so I’m sure we will find out in the next few months what she is up to. Also, remember that the CW cut her budget and her filming schedule. Perhaps Tyra is shopping a new network for her talents.

Unless ANTM goes to cable I can’t imagine another network picking it up. It’s the top show at the CW but that doesn’t mean much when compared to the big three. I don’t see her trying to improve upon it after all this time either. I go more with #2 as well. Her doing the talkshow was because she was obviously bored with ANTM and it’s showed, not to mention all the stuff about how she barely showed up to dub her lines for the show (this on top of Paulina’s statements about how she barely showed up for panel). Unless she’s become bored with the talkshow and or realized no way can she keep doing the show based on the type of subjects she likes to cover (people eating stuff from their nose) and not become closer to say Jerry Springer than Oprah, there’s something that’s not being said. Her decision to focus on making movies doesn’t give me warm fuzzies either. With Oprah’s movies, she’s at least trying to do quality stuff even if she’s beating you over the head with it. I can’t imagine what a film from Bankable Studios would entail or what type of message Tyra is trying to convey as far as her trying to empower women or expand the definitions of beauty. Maybe as another poster suggested, she can do Lifetime movies but otherwise I’m prepared to be underwhelmed.

If we have ANTM no longer, I will kill myself. This is the best show ever, I enjoy it so much and I don’t want it to finish. But I do agree that it needs to become better as it was cycles before. I think that the last cycle that was serious was Cyle 6, though I loved cycle 8 and 12. But too many important things are missing, like serious judging pannel, the judging tests and stuff like those. Come on Tyra, you can do better.
