Grammy Question From Your Mom: What Is A Skrillex?

The red-headed stepdaughter of  award show season is here. Yes, that’s right! The Grammys are tonight on CBS at 8:00. With the passing of Whitney Houston, the show just went straight to the top of everyone’s viewing schedule and we have a feeling everyone will be tuning in to see the tribute they put together.

With that said, your mom is probably going to have a few questions as she’s watching this year. Most predictably: what is a Skrillex? He’s nominated for 5 awards including Best New Artist, Best Dance Recording, and Best Dance/Electronica Album.

So in order to help you and your mom, I’ve put together a little guide with everything you need to know about Skrillex.

1. Who is Skrillex?

Skrillex’s an electronic music producer who many consider responsible for bringing the dubstep genre to the mainstream music community this year. Dubstep? I know, another new word. Dubstep is electronic music that’s originated in London. It has lots of bass and lots of drum and very little vocals. Or as your grandmother might know it, “a racket.”

Here’s his Grammy nominated song for best dance recording: Scary Monsters and Nice Spirits

2. Where did he come from?

Skrillex has actually been around for awhile. He joined the band From First to Last as the lead singer in 2004 and then launched a solo career in 2007. In 2010 he released My Name is Skrillex, the album that firmly placed him on the road to fame.

3. What’s his real name?

Seeing that he was born before the Pilot Inspektor generation of names, you’re right to assume that it’s not his real name. His real name is Sonny John Moore. If you say it 100 times fast, it kinda sounds like Skrillex.

4. How does he leave the house looking like that?

While I’m not positive, I can only assume that’s trying to channel that “Daria’s grungier little brother look.”
