In ‘Introducing Lorelai Planetarium‘, there’s so much to talk about it’s hard to know where to begin. So, instead of once again talking about Lorelai marrying Christopher, and why she’s so nervous about telling Rory about it, let’s talk about Luke!
In this episode, Luke & April seem to be getting along great as dad & daughter. He seems to take an honest interest in her life, even the boring school gossip. In a way, it reminds me of how much like a “friend” Lorelai is to Rory. Then, in this episode, April gets sick…. and the first person Luke calls is Lorelai.
I’ve always wondered about that – why doesn’t Luke call Anna?Is it because he trusts Lorelai? Or that she’s been on his mind? And, when Luke calls, why does Lorelai go to him at the hospital? This last one is perhaps a little obvious, since Luke has always been there for Lorelai when Richard ended up in the hospital or other bad things happened.
When Lorelai did show up, Luke seemed so happy to see her. Maybe he was hoping that things would improve between them again. And then to see Lorelai’s wedding ring… *sigh*

I think he didn’t call Anna because he didn’t want her to think he couldn’t handle things – he didn’t want Lorelai to know her dog got sick under his care, and he didn’t want Anna to think he made April sick, so he turned to someone other than the parent/pet owner of who he was taking care of in both cases.
Yeah, he and Lorelai help each other out, but Luke wants Anna to think he can handle April and Lorelai to think he can handle Paul Anka, so in each case, he doesn’t call the person most likely to care about the sick one. He wants to look like he is capable of handling everything himself, though of course he is not.
In response to Jessi:
All the moments you mentioned all seem to have a bit of a “crap…what have we done!? We have to fix this as soon as possible!” feeling to them. I, like you, have an odd obsession with Season 7 if only because I really do want to like it because it’s the end of one of my favorite shows. Sadly, it does feel like there was too much to fix and they just kept adding in unnecessary distractions (*cough* Lucy, Olivia, Marty, anything with April *end cough*). This show was better with more subtle drama and more quirky but realistic characters that dealt with problems like those same quirky but realistic characters would (even if it was disfunctional).
So – this is probably completely cynical, but I think the writers just needed a way for Luke to find out about the marriage. It seems a little rushed, but I am not completely against Season 7 as so many others are. Some of my overall favorite interactions and moments take place in this season, but many of them have this same feeling. The moment itself is very intense – Luke seeing the ring and realizing what has taken place – but the events that make the moment possible seem out of character or just plain odd (or perhaps just plain – since the odd part of the show is what makes it great).
Other moments from season 7 that have this same feeling to me – feel free to comment if you agree or disagree:
Lorelai’s car randomly breaking down, so she must turn to Luke to help her find a new one. (I personally really like the very Luke and Lorelai argument at the dealership.)
Christopher’s sudden desire for a child and subsequent drinking that leads to the fight with Luke. (Yeah – I’m a sucker for a good fight.)
Karaoke at Casey’s??? But the song is great.
Mac, I love that scene too! It’s The Philidelphia Story with Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant, one of my most watched movies ever! Conincidentally this is Lauren Graham’s favourite film. The stories run slightly paralell to one another in season 7.
Like has already been said, I think Luke was too worried about April to have any alterior motive for calling Lorelai – he just knew that she would help him. It was good that she went to the hospital and also that he found out about her marriage from her – even though it was accidentaly.
I don’t know if I’ve said it before here or not but although I prefer Christopher as a character, I’m glad that Luke & Lorelai end up together. I provides a nice symmetry for the show I felt that the struggles in season 7 were essential for everyone to straighten their heads out, blow off steam and discover what the really wanted.
I think it was just a reflex. They have always turned to each other – well mostly Lorelai actually – whenever they faced a difficult situation.
Luke doesn’t know anything about kids but he knows that Lorelai does. Plus he probably doesn’t think that Lorelai is still seeing Christopher (and even less marrying him) so maybe he sees as a chance to make up for keeping her out in the past and maybe clearing the air.
The scene is short but nice. It’s good that Lorelai goes to the hospital. In a way she acknowledges everything Luke did for her before.
Luke looks so hurt when he sees the ring and Lorelai so confused about her new status… We can feel they are uncomfortable and Luke can’t help but blabbering about giving his appendix. And Lorelai can see how much he cares for his daughter. I think she kind of admires this trait.
However my favourite scene is the one when Luke is going through the channels and comes across the movie (can’t remember the title) that gave Lorelai the idea of a location for their elopement. You can see how how much he’s sorry for letting this go…
That good question,I guess because probably Luke miss Lorelai and want her help from April get sick.He known her long time than Anna.Like Luke take Lorelai go to visit Richard’s heart attack at hosptail on season 1,Episode 10: Forgiveness and Stuff.
They were both out of character on season 7. None of it worked because it felt like watching a completely different show but with the same character name/face. To this day, I can’t stand watching that season for that mere fact.
Luke leans on Lorelai, Lorelai leans on Luke, thats just the way it is. He was so worried about april I dont think he would have had time to stop and think it was a good way to get in with lorelai – more a case of ‘oh my god panic im in a horible situation and need someone i can count on’. Take relationships out of the equasion and they have always been there for each other.
Cause April was visiting and she got really sick and didn’t know what to do. So he called Lorelai and wanted to know waht to do. She told him to take her to St. Josephs hospital.
Yeah, I don’t think there was any real reason that Luke would call Lorelai except force of habit. I mean, sure, it’s pretty obvious that there are still feelings there on both accounts since the relationship didn’t end because of any lack of feeling (the exact opposite actually). But yeah, if I could give any reason it would be that these two have always been there for each other and each of them always calls the other when they need anything (as far back as Season 1….Stella). To be honest, though, I hate seeing these two have any sort of interaction this season because up until the end it always just feels awkward and unnatural.
P.S. Did anyone else notice that Lorelai freaked out about not marrying Luke before what would have been the initial date of their wedding? Bah.
