Why I Love Moonlight (guest post)

The Great Blog Off

Guest post by Regina Avalos

This past television season has been hit time and time again. The worst blow was made by the writer’s strike that shut down productions, ended seasons and caused the death of new series. One series that comes to mind that disappeared during the strike is Bionic Woman. This series was hyped so much by the network, but it never found a solid footing for itself. Some did return following the forced hiatus, and one such series that caught my eye was Moonlight over on CBS.

Moonlight followed the life of one Mick St. John, a private investigator with a dark secret. He is a vampire, but he is not a vampire like most we are used to seeing. A stake through the heart won’t kill him, and he can go out in sunlight. The sun will just have a weakening effect with prolonged exposure. During the season, we met his friends and his love, but they have the battle of vampire-human romantic relationships. The season ended with them together.

That is at least one good thing because CBS has made the decision to not renew the series for a second season. This move has outraged fans of the series, and they have fought to get their series back on CBS or on another network. They have held blood drives and rallies in order to get the networks to notice their desire to bring Moonlight back. No such luck yet, but there is always hope.

Moonlight was one of my favorite new series of the season. It was fun and witty with good acting by Alex O’Loughlin in his role as Mick. I was shocked to see the series canceled like it was. I would love to see it picked back up. CBS did revive Jericho for a second season after the nuts campaign, but they might be feeling a bit burned with how low the ratings for Jericho were after the return from the dead. The reason for the cancellation of Moonlight is low ratings. With as much fan support this show has, that just surprises me. We’ll have to wait and see what happens in the months ahead.
