Scholastic is on the prowl for the next Harry Potter publishing phenom, and they think that “39 Clues”, a multimedia interactive book adventure thingy, might be just the ticket. Here’s more:
“The 39 Clues” is a planned 10-volume set about young Amy and Dan Cahill and their worldwide search for the secret to their family’s power.
The first book, “The Maze of Bones,” is written by Rick Riordan of “The Lightning Thief” fame and has an announced first printing of 500,000. Steven Spielberg has already acquired film rights to the series.
Designed for boys and girls ages 8 to 12, each book will have a different writer, including such best-sellers as Gordon Korman and Jude Watson. Backed by a multimillion-dollar marketing campaign, “The 39 Clues” also features game cards, a contest with a $10,000 first prize and a sophisticated Web site that includes games, blogs, videos and thousands of pages of background.

Regardless of whether it will outsell Harry Potter or not, it definitely sounds interesting. However, I think it’s very silly for publishers to keep coming up with what they title “the next Harry Potter”. Harry Potter is its own distinct genre at this point, and it’s pointless to try to compare other books with it. That’s just my opinion – what do you think?

NO!!!! I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love the 39 Clues, and am totally immersed, but IF anything will be the next Harry Potter, it would be Twilight. But in my opinion, nothing can beat Harry Potter (though I like Twilight more). It’s just that HP appeal to kids AND adults. 39 Clues is mainly kids. HP also appeals to girls AND boys, whilst Twilight draw mainly girls, and teen ones at that.
So, while I like a lot of books more than Harry Potter, I believe nothing can really challenge it.
Rant over. You may continue with your lives.
