Will Simon Cowell really leave Idol?

The Internet is abuzz lately with the idea that Simon Cowell is leaving American Idol after this upcoming season in order to do an American version of his British show X Factor.

Simon Cowell

Simon’s contract ends in May 2010 and according to the New York Post he’s been in long talks with Fox. Right now everyone is waiting to see what’s really going to happen.

The question that is being raised is can Idol survive without Simon? I have to admit that I’m not sure it would be the same without him. They’ve already changed a lot by adding Kara DioGuardi last season and of course this season brings us Paula Abdul’s departure and the addition of new judge Ellen DeGeneres. That’s a lot of shaking up for one show.

To me Simon Cowell is the main judge. Yes, there are other judges, and I love them all, but Simon has almost always voiced what I’ve been thinking. There are very few times that I completely disagree with him. Sometimes I think he’s a bit too brutal in his wording but in general he’s in tune with me.

I also think that a lot of people enjoy tuning into Idol just to see what Simon will say and I wonder if the show would lose a lot of appeal if he leaves after this upcoming season.

What do you think?
