Oprah Winfrey sat down and talked to Will Smith about how he felt when Barack Obama was named the first African-American president on her talk show yesterday. Like so many (myself and my family included), they discussed the emotion behind the historical election but, of course, Will had to bring some levity to the topic.
She asked “did you cry?” and his first was response was “I don’t be cryin’ and stuff, Oprah” but then he explained that his children were there for him as he “lost it” when Barack took the stage and made his acceptance speech. I have to admit that I had it pretty together up until that point too. I just started weeping. As Will pointed out, it has felt like the “practices” in America haven’t been living up to the “promises” and, for the first time in a long while, it finally feels like that is going to change.
