In ‘Dead Uncles and Vegetables‘, Luke plans a funeral for his Uncle Louie, a war veteran who was hated by all - by his own family, by the town of Stars Hollow, by everyone. Luke is the only one who seems to look past Louie being a “defensive hothead” and give him the respect he deserves as a war veteran and a family member. Plus, he made a vow to his father to do the funeral for Louie.
Eventually, frustrated by the town and Louie’s wishes to be buried with all his prized possessions, which won’t fit in the casket, Luke storms off, calling Louie a “selfish jerk.” During the episode, Luke is accused of being like Louie by other people in Stars Hollow – Taylor, for example, calls him a loner. And perhaps Luke thinks he’s a little stubborn and a little bit reclusive, so maybe he wonders if he’s at all like Louie.
At the funeral, with only Lorelai at his side, Luke wonders if he’s become the “cranky old bachelor” that Louie was. Lorelai reminds Luke of all the unselfish things he does for others – the chuppah, being there for Rory, taking in Jess… and in the end, it’s the town of Stars Hollow that shows Luke he’s not like Louie, by holding a wake at the diner for Louie. Though it’s for Louie, it’s really for Luke. As Lorelai says: “Face it, Luke, people like you.”
Do you think this acknowledgement by Stars Hollow helps to make Luke more outgoing in future episodes? More willing to help the town? Did Luke consciously try to improve himself even more, so as not to become like Louie?
Do you think Luke could ever have become like Louie?

Nah, Luke wouldn’t ever become like Louie. The best thing about Luke is that he’s far more than he seems. On the surface he always seems mad, cranky, irritable. He acts like a recluse and does nothing but camp, fish, and watch baseball (funny, by the way, since I’m pretty sure that was written in because Scott Paterson used to play). But he’s really very kind and he’s been characterized like that since day one. Basically, while he tries to fight it by being this cranky bastard, he’s a whole-heartedly generous person who loves Star Hollow as much as the next resident (why else would he never leave). I think that’s why most people prefer to see Lorelai end up with Luke because he’s the only man that is so humble that he prefers to hide every good deed that he does. He’s a good person and would like no one to see it.
To me i think yes. He never smiles hes always mad and never cracks a joke its not healthy. But thats just his character i think Lorelai is helping him over come it.
