Zap2It Picks Their Favorite "Gilmore Girls" Episodes

The year-end, decade-end list mania continues! Andrea Reiher of Zap2It has been listing her favorite episodes of the decade, and naturally, like any TV critic with taste, she’s picked a Gilmore Girls episode! Her top pick: “They Shoot Gilmores, Don’t They?” This is an epic episode featuring the 24 hour dance-a-thon, and Dean calling out Rory and Jess for their obvious feelings towards each other. Here’s the gut-wrenching scene itself:

Other episodes Andrea has picked out: the classic (and my personal favorite) “Forgiveness and Stuff,” “Emily in Wonderland,” “I Can’t Get Started,” “Luke Can See Her Face,” “Last Week Fights, This Week Tights,” and “Raincoats and Recipes.”

Do you agree with Andrea’s list of favorites? What are your favorite Gilmore Girls episodes, if you had to pick a top 5?

‘They Shoot Gilmore’s, Don’t They?’ Is a great great episode, definitely on my top 5 list, which is: ‘Love, War & Snow’, ‘The Festival of Living Art’, ‘Last weeks fights, this weeks fights’, ‘They Shoot Gilmore’s, Don’t They?’ and of course ‘Dear Emily and Richard’ :) But really I have more favs., that’s why I’ve seen every episode like 500 times :)

Earlier this year I actually re-watched the entire series and actually made a top 12 list. (12 instead of 10 because I thought the Pilot and series finale should be in there by default)

    1×01: Pilot
    1×08: Love & War & Snow
2×03: Red Light on the Wedding Night
3×07: They Shoot Gilmores, Don’t They?
    3×13: Dear Emily and Richard
    3×22: Those Are Strings, Pinocchio
4×02: The Lorelais’ First Day at Yale
4×20: Luke Can See Her Face
4×21: Last Week Fights, This Week Tights
    5×02: A Messenger, Nothing More
    5×03: Written in the Stars
    7×22: Bon Voyage

I don’t think I can pick five, it was hard enough narrowing it down that much. Haha.

Much easier of course to pick my least favorite seven: [1] 3.21 Here comes the son, [2] 5.05 We got us a pippi virgin, [3] 6.22 Partings, [4] 4.04 Chicken or beef, [5] 3.20 Say goodnight gracie, [6] 5.21 Blame booze and Melville and [7] Knit people knit. Over half of season 7 episodes would be in the bottom 25.

As to my favorite episodes the top ten would be: [1] 3.22 Those are strings pinnochio – by a wide margin, [2] 1.01 Pilot, [3] 2.21 Lorelai’s graduation day, [4] 1.02 Lorelai’s first day at Chilton, [5] 4.02 Lorelai’s first day at Yale, [6] 6.19 I get a sidekick out of you, [7] 5.13 Wedding bell blues, [8] 5.07 You jump, I jump Jack, [9] 7.17 Will you be my Lorelai Gilmore, [10] 6.08 Let me hear your balalakas ring out.

Hard to leave out all of the other real favorites as would easily number close to 35 distributed as follows: [season 1] 6 episodes, [season 2] 5 episodes, [season 3] 6 episodes, [season 4] 7 episodes, [season 5] 5 episodes, [season 6] 4 episodes, [season 7] 2 episodes.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Last Week Fights, This Weeks Tights and Raincoats & Recipes. They are undoubtedly my top 2. The Shrinking Lorelais comes as a very close second.
Then I really like episodes like the Pilot, The Lorelais’ First Day at Chilton, Rory’s Birthday Parties, Forgiveness and Stuff, The Damned Donna Reed, Run Away Little Boy, Teach Me Tonight, I Can’t Get Started, Those Hazy… Days, Tales of Poes and Fire, Those Are Strings Pinocchio, Ballrooms and Biscotti, The Lorelais’ First Day at Yale, Written in The Stars, Wedding Bell Blues, Say Something, Just Like Riding a Bike, Lorelai? Lorelai? and Bon Voyage.

    So hard to pick…

The Incredible Sinking Lorelais is my favorite episode of the series, makes me cry every time I watch it! There are so many other good ones. Scene in a Mall, Rory’s Birthday Parties, Say Something, The Party’s Over, The Reigning Lorelai, A Deep-Fried Korean Thanksgiving…I could go on for a long time. I think Written in the Stars should have been on the list for sure, a classic Luke/Lorelai episode and one fans waited for a long time to happen!

Whoever compiled this list did a great job, all the episodes chosen are great ones!

I’ll try to keep it down to 5:

    Back in the Saddle Again
Sookie’s Wedding (I can’t remember the name of this one)
    Presenting Lorelai Gilmore
    That Damn Donna Reed
    The Festival of Living Pictures

The cool thing about all of these diverse lists is that they speak to the depth of quality distributed throughout the entire series and bring to mind a quote from Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune discussing the decade in television:

“In the late 90’s television gave us programs that were alegedly aimed at teens but explored mature, complicated themes with intelligence, compassion, imagination, and wit. ‘Veronica Mars’ [2004], ‘Everwood’ [2002], ‘Gilmore girls’ [2000] – you are all sorely missed. Whatever missteps these shows may have made, they are far superior to derivative, campy, teen-oriented shows such as ‘Vampire Diaries’ [2009] and the revamped ‘Melrose Place’ [2009].”

I’m sure all of us could come up with some other candidates for mediocre teen-oriented shows currently running.

    Top 5

    1. Raincoats and Recipes
i’m a huge luke and lorelai fan, for any true javajunkie, this episode is numero uno.

    2. The Prodigal Daughter Returns
i love that amy sets the reconciliation of lorelai and rory against the downfall of luke and lorelai. brilliant writing in my opinion.

    4.Deep-Fried Korean Thanksgiving
just an all around great episode. i especially love sookie and jackson’s thanksgiving :)

    4. Those Are Strings Pinocchio
we get to see luke cry in this episode! nothing beats that! plus the lorelai-rory aspect of this episode is what the show is all about.

    5. Bon Voyage
it was a tough choice between this and the pilot but this episode just goes to show that despite amy and dan leaving the show, gilmore girls throughout stayed true to its character, writing, casting and all.
