Alec Baldwin is like Saturday Night Live‘s Good Old Boy: He’s hosted the show more times than (almost) anyone, and since 30 Rock got its legs, he basically has a contract with NBC that he has to appear dapper and dashing whenever the show needs a good ratings boost. And so for the season finale, and following Betty White‘s record-breaking performance last weekend, Lorne Michaels called in the big guns. So how was it? Totally palatable! Though a lot of the best sketches were unrelated to Baldwin, since some of the younger SNL cast members seems to have become totally unhinged recently, which makes for good entertainment.
Baldwin has had this long-standing rivalry with Steve Martin for “most hosting gigs on SNL.” Two older rich white guys…it’s nice that this is the biggest worry they have right now. (Oh also, way to call us out for watching this “more realistically…Monday morning on a computer.”)
Our favorite Baldwin role of the night was the Southern sniper with the indecipherable accent. It was like watching Brad Pitt in Inglorious Basterds all over again!:
TimeCrowave: “We thought of this idea while high.” – SNL writers
We’re not sure if a sketch involving Alec Baldwin being someone’s favorite dad was like, such a good idea.
Not Baldwin-related, but Andy Samberg‘s digital shorts are at least back to being coherent after that cherry-popping vid. This one is like if Joss Whedon did a musical about meth!
Also not involving Alec was the two great Weekend Update revivals: Bill Hader‘s “City Correspondent” Stefon and Bobby Moynihan‘s Snooki.
