Barbie Joins Foursquare, Encourages Girls To Participate In Scavenger Hunt

BarbieNo, you haven’t missed some big end of the world news event. Dolls have not come to life and started joining social media sites. Only Barbie, the doll with the most professions ever, would join Foursquare and Twitter to promote her latest gig as “Video Girl.”

Barbie will be using the social marketing mediums to promote scavenger hunts this week in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York, leaving video, photo and text clues for participants on her Twitter, @barbiestyle, and Foursquare. Following the clues will lead participants to prizes and free swag, and — we’ll admit it — it just sounds like fun.

The new Video Girl Barbie doll has a tiny camera (hidden behind her necklace) that records up to 30 minutes of video clips from the dolls point of view. The clips can be played on a tiny LCD screen on her back. Plug her into your computer to edit with free software and share your clips with your friends, kind of like a Flipcam trapped in a Barbie’s body.

Video Girl Barbie’s scavenger hunts kicked off yesterday in San Francisco, and hit L.A. today, Chicago tomorrow and New York Friday. Official rules are here.

We might be out of the Barbie demo, but we still love playing with the dolls. If we didn’t have to work we would totally hit up the scavenger hunt, but it’s summer vacation, so we’re sure there will be plenty of girls out there with time to spare. Will you be checking it out when it comes to your city?
