Much like I Hate Everything, the listicle booklet we reviewed several weeks ago, Pirate Haiku is the type of Barnes and Noble gift you pickup as an after-thought on the way out the door after you decide that a Nook is too expensive of a Christmas gift for your niece you only see once every two weeks.
At least the the title isn’t misleading: Every page of 185 book by Michael P. Spradlin is taken up by exactly one 5-7-5 syllable poem. Such as:
Captain curses me
I am no longer third mate
and owe lots of rum
and
Japan is NO fun
But I have learned one key thing
Don’t Screw with ninjas!
Now Michael here is the New York Times bestselling author of the young-adult books The Youngest Templar, so I assumed he knows what audience he’s writing for: people who think that pirates and ninjas are still “in.” On the other hand, you can’t call Mr. Spardlin lazy, he did write 185 pirate haikus, which is more thought than I’ll ever put into the subject. So here’s my attempt at a haiku book review of my own:
Pirates and Ninjas,
Are so last season but hey,
It’s still a quick buck(aneer)
DAMMIT!
