Dreama Walker is a film and television actress. She portrayed scheming Hazel on the CW’s Gossip Girl, and bad girl Becca on CBS’ The Good Wife. Her recent movie roles include playing Clint Eastwood’s granddaughter in the award-winning drama Gran Torino and now the starring role as Don’t Trust The B—- In Apt 23. Also, she is awesome.
1. What’s your backstory?
I grew up in a very artistic and supportive family in Tampa, Florida. My mother had encouraged me from a young age to go after anything I wanted, no matter how nuts. After senior year of high school, I got a crazy hair and decided to move to New York and pursue my dream of becoming a singer/songwriter. My manager recommended that I “try acting” and set me up with an agent. At the age of 17, 2 weeks after graduation I moved to Manhattan all by myself. To make ends meet, (my family was not able to support me financially) I began working as a waitress at several hilariously themed restaurants only to get fired over and over again because of sheer lack of coordination and the self proclaimed title of “the worst waitress in the world.”
Eventually, after a lot of hard work and a realization that acting was truly “my thing,” I began working consistently enough as an actress to stop spilling drinks on people in the Lower East Side. Thank God. Meanwhile, it’s been almost 6 years since I moved here and I’ve had the privilege of working with Clint Eastwood, Ricky Gervais, Matthew Perry and many other wonderful people. Six months ago my Mom passed away suddenly and I try to live every day letting her love and sense of humor be projected through me.
2. Everyone has a “thing.” What’s yours?
Traveling. I want to see everything. Next stop is Thailand and Vietnam.
3. Everyone also has a karaoke song. Name yours (and don’t be shy).
“Son of a Preacher Man” Dusty Springfield and maybe a “Proud Mary” after a few more tequila shots. I’m convinced tequila does something awesome to my chords.
4. Who are your biggest influences?
All of the people in my life I’m lucky enough to be around.
5. What is it you most dislike?
Animal cruelty, cockroaches and when people hack loogeys. I just don’t see why it’s necessary.
6. Whose job would you like to steal?
Judd Apatow. I’d be so pleased with myself if I was that funny all the time. And a hipster’s. I’d shave off my mustache and use my parent’s money to travel the world instead of moping around Williamsburg in a horrible band.
7. What was your best date?
My first date with my boyfriend. He is a connoisseur of beer and I, a connoisseur or crepes. We consumed both and were consumed by each other for 4 hours. Only to find out that we both got kicked out of Girl Scouts/Boy Scouts for kicking another kid’s ass. Among many other similarities, I found him fascinating and self deprecating.
8. What was your worst?
Oy vey. I guess ones that you have to write down what you’re going to talk about before to make sure to avoid awkward silences. That should’ve been a sign.
9. When I wake up in the middle of the night it’s because I’ve had a nightmare that I’m ___ .
Hm. That I never finished high school and suddenly have to get my G.E.D. and I don’t know the answers or I arrive on set and don’t know any of my lines and almost get fired. Or do.. I guess Im just terrified of ending up like Lindsay Lohan. Ha.
10. I feel my best when I’m wearing ___ .
An ensemble I put together. A weird, quirky one. To me, dressing can feel a lot like making art.
11. Please settle the debate: New York or LA?
Well, I’m a horrible driver and I HATE Ed Hardy, so definitely New York. To quote Woody Allen in Annie Hall, “I don’t want to move to a city where the only cultural advantage is being able to make a right turn on a red light. ”
I love New York. It is the peanut butter to my jelly.
12. What’s on your playlist at this very moment?
“Sweet Disposition” by The Temper Traps and “You’ve Changed” by Sia.
13. What are you watching on TV?
I’ve been a fan of “LOST” since season 1. On a more embarrassing note I get into “The Real Housewives” On Bravo. I feel so high functioning and mature. Oh yeah, and I’m really into “Breaking Bad” this season. What a show.
14. If you alone held the power to pick a boyfriend for Jennifer Aniston, who would you pick?
I would ask to transfer that power to something more important.
15. Given the chance, would you rather hang out with George Clooney or Robert Downey Jr.?
Robert Downey Junior, he has a past. George seems very elusive.
16. If you were a character on any movie or TV show, past or present, who would you be?
Oooohhh. I think I felt a deep connection to the little girl from “The Incredibles” except without the super powers (LAME) and Natalie Portman’s character in “Garden State” Those aren’t good answers. I’ll try again.
I love characters that are dynamic and quirky. I hate playing the sweet young girl or the innocent protagonist. Id rather work with an unlikeable character and work on making her relatable.
17. What is your drug of choice?
Pickles and Strawberry Rhubarb Pie. Like a weird pregnant lady.
18. What’s the last thing you think about before falling asleep at night?
Ugh. Deep. Sometimes on rough nights I replay the last conversation I had with my Mom. But, in happier times, I love thinking about what’s next? What project? What trip? How much I love my bedroom..and then I pass out.
