Interview With Diana Schoenbrun, Zombie Crafting Expert

Zombies can be just as cute as teddy bears if you want them to be. Diana Schoenbrun is the author of Beasties: How to Make 22 Mischievous Monsters That Go Bump in the Night, a guide to making stuffed animals of the undead. We chatted with Diana about the history of the book, and scored some tips for making our very own Zombie, just in time for Halloween.

“My inspiration to have a Zombie project in the Beasties book came from watching films such as Night of the Living Dead and watching the Michael Jackson Thriller video. Watching dancing zombies and hearing the eerie voice of Vincent Price made me become a Zombie fan at a young age.”

Diana sent over a Zombie pattern for us to check out. She included a tip for crafting up a creature: “Use recycled fabric to make your Zombie. Reuse an old pillowcase, t-shirt, or tea towel. The Zombie should look ragged and crazy-eyed so your stitches can be messy. Glue bits of scrap cloth or gauze to hang from the zombie’s body. Add as much felt blood and gore as you like.”

We can’t wait to get started!
