"Argh, Mom you're so annoying!" Amanda ignores her mother's order to come home, sealing her fate. She tells her that she's "a big girl" who gets to "make these decisions now" and continues on with her lovely stroll with Raffaele. But then again, doesn't everyone shop around for the best seasoned and smoked cheeses after someone he or she knows has been brutally murdered?
What could go wrong? A 20-year-old fresh-faced American honors student spending a year in Perugia, Italy. Who woulda thunk the rest of the year (and years after) would be spent in an Italian jail?
Amanda doesn't ask her mother if she may "sleep with danger?" when she goes to Italy. She wastes no time falling for the Raffaele Sollecito, who has a sketchy allure and a Eurotrash haircut. Foxy Knoxy like.
Amanda meets her new roommate: Meredith Kercher, studying abroad in Perugia, as well, and originally from England. Meredith is shown gently hassling Amanda about not doing her share of cleaning in the cottage. Amanda pays her no mind, as skipping through fields and smoking joints in bed with her new boo is clearly more appealing than doing the dishes.
"Oh hey officers. We were just hanging around outside. Um, there's blood inside and also Meredith is missing. Care to take a gander?"

Amanda's mom is just like yours. Conflicted, worried, terrified of her daughter alone in a foreign country. You like her. Your mother relates to her. She would do anything for her family.
She's a good person. See the cross? Marcia Gay Harden is the quintessential parent. It wasn't too long ago she was lecturing a 14-year-old about syphilis in She's Too Young.
Candlelight vigil? Major bummer. Lingerie shopping? Yes, please!
"Just like Shaggy said... it wasn't me!"
Amanda is still unaware of how her cold stare betrays her during the trail.
Prosecuting DA Giuliano Mignini hates Amanda and her cartwheels. Amanda's blue eyes stare back, thinking, "Those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, my friend."
How's this for a random turn of events? A fingerprint connected Rudy Guede to the crime. He elected for a "fast-track" trial and was sentenced to 30 years for murder and sexual assault. His sentence has been reduced to 16 years, because he was the only one of the three convicted young people to apologize to Meredith Kercher's family.
"But I'm a cheerleader!"
Oh wait, wrong movie.
"But I'm on vacation!"
