The Second New Year’s Eve Trailer Makes The Movie Look Even Cheesier Than Before

What’s new about the second New Year’s Eve trailer:

Abigail Breslin is Sarah Jessica Parker‘s daughter, which means SJP doesn’t seem like the sad sack costume designer she was portrayed as in the first trailer.
Jon Bon Jovi definitely plays a rock star: he’s performing on New Year’s Eve, Sofia Vergara is one of his handlers, and Katherine Heigl is apparently the normal girl he dumped.
The most implausible plotline: The first baby born in the New Year will receive $25,000. Is it because we’re all going to die in 2012? It does, however, explain why Jessica Biel and Seth Meyers sound so fucking smug when they say, “Oh, is it New Year’s?”

What’s the same:

Ashton Kutcher is moping… about what? Contrary to popular belief, he doesn’t play the same character from Valentine’s Day. In fact, he seems to be doing the opposite: His old character Reed Bennett was disgustingly optimistic, while “Randy” sulks and hates anything New Year’s. Ah well, gotta have one in every bunch.
We still don’t know what Hilary Swank does, only that it includes scattering confetti and paper from the rooftops.
The identity of Josh Duhamel‘s dream girl is going to remain a mystery; it’ll be the “Who is Julia Roberts going home to for Valentine’s Day?” of New Year’s Eve.

Do I want to see this movie any more than I did before? Not really.

Also, the studio decided to jump the gun and release it on December 9. So even if it’s OK, we’ll be all hyped up about New Year’s three weeks before it happens.

How do you know Abigail Breslin‘s grown up? She joins an indie teen sex comedy called A Virgin Mary. Now, she’s never been squeaky-clean — consider her “Superfreak” dance in Little Miss Sunshine – but the plot still comes as a shock: Abigail’s character promises her best guy friend that if neither of them has lost their virginity by 18, they’ll sleep with each other.

Joining Abigail in A Virgin Mary are Carter Jenkins as the lucky guy (Valentine’s Day), Keke Palmer (last seen on Degrassi) as her best friend, and Daryl Sabara (from the Spy Kids movies).

Turns out this is something of a pattern: Many other young Hollywood actresses made the transition to more adult movies with a single role, shocking either because of their age or their previous “good-girl” look.

Who out there bet that Pink‘s “Raise Your Glass” would be this movie’s theme song? Go collect your winnings — you deserve them. Although this is being billed as the sequel to 2010′s Valentine’s Day, only a few of the actors reprise their roles: Ashton Kutcher, Hector Elizondo, Jessica Biel. Otherwise, it’s fresh meat ready to humiliate themselves in the effort to recreate the wonder of Love Actually. And this movie is the closest in date to that, as it’s set on the tense, hopeful night of December 31. But we think the studio is way overemphasizing the significance of New Year’s Eve.

Soulmates! Babies! First kisses! Marriage! Musical performances in Times Square! THE REST OF YOUR LIFE HINGES ON THIS NIGHT. Just listen to the characters in the trailer.

“How do you explain the entire world coming together on one night to celebrate the hope of a new year?” – If by “hope” you mean “free-flowing liquor,” then yes, it’s a pretty impressive meet-up.

“This is the biggest night of my career, and if I screw it up…” – …What? People will be so drunk they won’t notice a newscaster, or whoever Hilary Swank is supposed to be, flub a few lines. Besides, what is there to say aside from “Happy New Year” and to sing a few bars of “Auld Lang Syne”?

“Who are you gonna kiss at midnight?” - Ah, the most important question in a young single person’s life. Look, it’s definitely a romantic moment, but it’s not the end of the world. I’ve kissed my boyfriend one New Year’s Eve out of the four years we’ve been together, because we were always across the country from each other. The New Year’s kiss should be like in When Harry Met Sally, where they’re friends but it’s not the most definitive moment of that year.

(Also, when did Abigail Breslin get so old??)

“Nothing beats New York on New Year’s Eve.” – Actually, that’s the complete opposite of the truth. Wedged into the crush of drunk, rowdy people, freezing your ass off from 3 p.m. onward to stare a glittery ball? We’d rather be curled up on the couch in our underwear clinking champagne glasses with our girlfriends — or, okay, a significant other — than suffer in the snow.

I usually assume that the only time celebrities go to movies is when they’re invited to premieres. But a Crushable tipster informed us that Abigail Breslin, her mom, and a friend went to a Manhattan movie theater to catch a screening of Prom.

Abigail, who is in town filming the Valentine’s Day followup New Year’s Eve, has kept a low profile since coming into town. Might she be a film star who doubles as a normal teenager a la Dakota Fanning? We can only hope so.

Abigail Breslin rehearses for her role as Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker in this video shot on January 11th in Manhattan.

“I’ve never done Broadway before, so to get to do it and play one of my heroes is very exciting, but I’m very nervous!” Abigail says.

The Miracle Worker stars Abigail, Alison Pill, Matthew Modine, Jennifer Morrison and Elizabeth Franz. You can start seeing the performance on February 12th on Broadway!

On Playing Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker on Broadway:
[Keller] is one of my heroes. “When I got the call asking if I would play her, I was like, ‘Heck, yes!’

On Going to Disneyworld:
It’s really fun! You get to go on rides all day, and then at night I do this thing called Candlelight, where I tell the story of Christmas to the audience.

On Being Twilight Obsessed:
I’m a crazy, obsessed fan. I went to see the first one on opening day. But I felt left out because everyone in the audience had Twilight T-shirts and I didn’t. So I have Twilight T-shirts now. And have you seen those Twilight water bottles? I have one of those.

On Writing:
Short stories, mostly. I just wrote one about a girl in a mental institution.
