Welcome to Crush This, your weekly guide to what’s new in movies, music and TV. We’ve navigated the inner reaches of our entertainment-obsessed brains in search of all the pop culture landscape has to offer. This week, we’re getting into the summer movie season in earnest, with big releases like Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood with Russell Crowe in the lead role and romantic comedies Letters to Juliet and Just Wright. And don’t miss this week’s season finales of some of your favorite TV shows like Vampire Diaries — especially if they haven’t been renewed by the networks yet. More »
Bubbly, soulful screecher Siobhan Magnus, the latest contestant voted off American Idol last night, wants to tell her fans — that call themselves “Siobon bons” and “Siobombies” — not to worry. More »
We know every week on a competition reality show is usually advertised as the “most fill-in-the-blank superlative episode ever!!!”, but tonight’s elimination on American Idol truly was one of the most shocking (and tearful) we’ve witnessed yet. Sent packing in the last semifinal round were Lilly Scott, Katelyn Epperly, Todrick Hall, and Alex Lambert. Yes, you read that right.
True, Lilly gave one of her weakest performances of the season on Tuesday, but we didn’t even consider the fact that America… More »
There are certain things that are absolutely true: there will always be death and taxes, tabloid magazines will always speculate about the possible contents of Jennifer Aniston’s womb, and American Idol is not a singing competition.
If there was any doubt about the last statement, this year — Idol’s ninth season — has effectively silenced it. Now that original judge Paula Abdul has packed up her crazy and headed home and co-creator Simon Cowell will be following her at the end… More »
Since we’ve now moved on from auditions to the grueling start of Hollywood week on American Idol, there are fewer “wow, what were they thinking moments” and a lot more applause-worthy moments. If I’m going to share some of the highlights with you, there’s no way I could do so without mentioning Andrew Garcia who gave my favorite performance last night. It’s hard to believe a guy could take Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up”, rearrange it, and make it current… More »
It goes without saying that I love when American idol gets down to the top 12 for obvious reasons, but aside from that I think my favorite part of the show is Hollywood week. I don’t really know how to explain my enjoyment, I think it’s just seeing who can really survive the huge transition from audition to Kodak Theater.
This season 181 hopefuls walked into that Kodak Theater to stand up and sing. We also finally got to meet Ellen… More »
American Idol hopeful Nicci Nix may have charmed judges with her cute demeanor, her apparent innocence, and her Italian accent but it seems a lot of that has been exaggerated. It turns out that Nicci is no stranger to reality television after all.
TMZ has dug up a lot of information about this contestant. Nicci was adorable in an awkward way but how real was her act? For one thing, Nicci appeared on Fear Factor under the… More »
As I mentioned yesterday, American Idol’s last audition round was actually a little recap showing up some of the highlights that we hadn’t gotten to see the first time in each of the seven audition cities. Here are some highlights of the highlights.
Jessica Furney managed to charm Simon Cowell with his own song well enough to get sent through to Hollywood:
I’m still not sure how Victoria Beckham felt to discover that she is Stephanie Fisher’s fashion icon considering Stephanie’s… More »
Tonight’s episode of the American Idol auditions covered all seven cities showing us some of the very best – and very worst! – hopefuls that we didn’t get to see in previous episodes.
For instance, we got to hear Jessica Furney who swore she wasn’t sucking up when she chose to sing “Footprints in the Sand” which was co-written by Simon Cowell. Luckily she had a really good, clear voice and got a yes across the board!
We were also… More »
After last night’s auditions in Denver I wanted to kick off with Mark Labriola who was such a huge surprise. I don’t think anyone expected him to actually be any good and he ended up being fantastic.
I’m a sucker for genuinely emotional people too, so I was moved by his tears outside after he made it, talking about how he thought his dreams were over until he got there.
Here’s Kimberly Kerbow who luckily had a good enough voice to back… More »
It was our second-to-last audition night tonight as American Idol hit Denver, Colorado. We were once again joined by guest judge Victoria Beckham and although I had my doubts at first I really do like her. She gets a bit annoying going on about someone’s look because that shouldn’t be the focus but considering her own interests it makes sense.
The night didn’t seem like it would start well when we were introduced to Mark Labriola who said he’s often mistaken… More »
After last night’s American Idol Dallas auditions I found some video clips to help highlight the really amazing talent, as well as the amazing lack of talent in some people’s efforts.
Check out Julie Kevelighan who claimed it was her year and was very clearly so wrong about that.
Yikes. Also, why was she dressed like she was trying out for a pageant?
You had to know that I was going to post the video of the ex-Barney kid in dominatrix… More »
They say everything’s bigger in Texas – can the same be said for the talent? That was the question tonight as American Idol auditions were held in Dallas, Texas.
Guest judge Neil Patrick Harris joked that his goal was to “shatter the dreams of dozens”. All kidding aside, that’s exactly what he and the other judges had to do repeatedly, including the first contestant.
Julie Kevelighan returned to audition after trying out with a horrible rendition of “Lady Marmalade” in season… More »
In case you missed some of the highlights from last night’s American Idol auditions in Los Angeles I’ve gathered a few video clips from some of the best and worst of the night. Here we get to see that Neil Goldstein’s rock and roll dreams most certainly did NOT come true.
You can check out Damien Lefavor who will show you a) how NOT to audition for a singing competition as well as b) how NOT to do martial arts…. More »
When you’re auditioning for American Idol in Los Angeles you don’t have very far to go when you get sent through to Hollywood. On the other hand, it hurts just as much when you’re cut!
Tonight’s auditions showed us L.A.’s finest – and worst – with guest judge Avril Lavigne on the scene to give her opinion. By the way, she looked adorable in her horned hoodie which was from her own line, Abbey Dawn.
Los Angeles kicked off with a cringe… More »
You may remember American Idol hopeful Angela Martin who auditioned in Chicago – for the third time!
She had auditioned in Season 7, made it to Hollywood, but then was soon cut after the devastating murder of her father. Not ready to let the dream die, Angela came back in Season 8 and made it through again. Things were going well until she was forced to return home to appear in court for a traffic violation.
Thinking that the third time’s the… More »
This is one of those situations where I would be beyond angry if it was me. American Idol contestant Michael Lynche has been disqualified from the show after his father told the press that his son had made the Top 24 finalists.
Due to the fact that everything is pre-recorded from the auditions through to the end of Hollywood, Idol contestants – and their families – are held to a major confidentiality agreement. No one is allowed to spread the word… More »
If you missed last night’s Orlando auditions for American Idol I’ve got some video clips of the good, the bad, and the crazy.
Theo Glinton showed up in a cape, face decorations, and an over-the-top voice that was more on the loud side than the good side.
Sorry Theo. Better luck with the hair salon.
Beatboxer Jay Stone took a cue from Blake Lewis and did something a little different for his audition. His version of “Come Together” was crazy and I… More »
The Orlando auditions for American Idol brought us a guest judge that Glee fans recognized – Kristin Chenoweth was there to help judge the hopefuls down in Florida.
Unfortunately, Orlando didn’t start off very well with Theo going not only for the gold ticket but for the overkill too. He went overboard with “Heartbreak” by Pat Benatar and although her vocals were always powerful, his were actually TOO powerful. All the judges gave a firm no to Hollywood.
Seth Rollins brought in… More »
In last night’s audition round we got to see Chicago try out to become the next American Idol and it wasn’t pretty. Like I said in my recap the ones who were good stood out but there were so many people who were just outright terrible. Take a look at this clip which features some of the mangled audition attempts.
At about 1:45 into the clip you can see a mother approaching Simon Cowell to give him flak for not putting… More »
