Show business often becomes a family business, with famous actors and actresses opening the doors for their younger relatives. Having Julia Roberts as an aunt couldn’t have hurt when Emma Robers was trying to land her first acting gig, and the adorable Apatow girls got their start as child actresses by playing their mom’s kids in their dad’s movies. Last night’s season premiere of American Idol brought legions of hopefuls out to Savannah, Georgia to try their skill in front of the judges. Because there were so many auditions, I’ve condensed my thoughts into the ancient, pithy, Japanese form known as haiku. How efficient is that? More »
Ready for an American Idol “where are they now?”? Eighth season winner Kris Allen is apparently spending his time hanging out with some jester bros and attempting to rap. Oh, and he’s grown a weird mustache. More »
Twilight actress Nikki Reed wed American Idol contestant Paul McDonald over the weekend at a private ranch in Malibu. US Magazine released this photo of the couple, which will cover their new issue, on stands Friday.

Here’s the even-more-depressing thing about Thomas Lennon‘s tweet. Thomas (of The State and Reno 911 fame) is 41 years old. A person 15 years younger than him would 26. And 26 is the high end of the age spectrum for people who are cast in singing competitions. More »
Mark Wahlberg, the executive producer of Entourage, announced that although this is the show’s final season on HBO, there’s a movie in the works. Considering that Entourage has been running on fumes for the last two seasons, a movie seems like the absolute last thing that this series needs, but I guess it means that Jerry Ferrara can wring a few more minutes out of his career. The truth is, not all TV shows need to be made into movies. In addition to Entourage, here are eight more TV shows that would not work on the big screen. More »
Last week, we brought you the hilarity that is “Trolling Saruman,” a glorious mashup of The Lord of the Rings and the infamous Trololo meme. And you know what? It occurs to us that lots of other pop culture fixtures could benefit from the Trololo treatment. Any readers out there handy with video editing want to get on these? More »

Don’t worry, you didn’t miss a sneak preview episode of The X Factor or a stealthy appearance on American Idol. Simon Cowell is my Boyfriend Of The Week because I miss him. Because his absence on the TV has left a hole in my heart that’s as black and as true as his sense of humor.

I wish I could break up with American Idol. I really do. Every season I swore it would be my last, but last year I thought I’d really stick to it. Lee DeWyze won and almost puked on stage, and the imminent departure of Simon Cowell gave me the strength I needed to finally quit that show for good. But quitting a show is hard – especially when it’s your job to write about pop culture. I got around the ban by sneaking YouTube clips and reading recaps, but the fact that I still care about who wins this season means that Idol has beaten me once again. More »
By this point, most audiences have a pretty good sensibility about reality TV shows not being 100 percent ‘real.’ Episodes are edited and aired out of order, and people often stir up drama or amplify their reactions in order to get more camera time. But when something truly real happens on a reality show, it makes for incredibly compelling television. More »
And then there were four: Jacob Lusk was eliminated from American Idol last night, and he went out with a bang. The 23-year-old from Compton was one of our favorite contestants from the start, and he will be missed! More »
Earlier this week, we introduced you to the amazingness that is Jersey Shore as performed by the cast of the current Broadway production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. Naturally, this got us thinking (once we’d finished laughing our heads off): What might happen if OTHER reality television shows met up with a variety of high art movements? Oh, the drama! Here are the resulting love children: More »
Last night, American Idol castoff Pia Toscano performed on the results show of Dancing with the Stars. I often prefer results shows to actual episodes of DWTS, because we get to see the professional dancers together without gimmicks. Conveniently, the pro dancers who choreographed a routine to Pia’s rendition of “I’ll Stand By You” were Karina Smirnoff and none other than Pia’s rumored boyfriend, Mark Ballas. More »
Lauren Alaina really found her sweet spot on last night’s ep of Idol with this rendition of Sara Evans‘ “Born to Fly.” Is she back to being a contender to win the whole thing? We’d be really into seeing a Haley Reinhart/Lauren Alaina finale. More »
American Idol castoff Pia Toscano is wasting absolutely zero time keeping her name in the media. Her first step was going on a highly-publicized date with Dancing with the Stars pro Mark Ballas. Now, she’s going to be performing on Mark’s show. Coincidence? Or a publicity coup? More »
American Idol castoff Paul McDonald and Twilight star Nikki Reed are the new hot couple. However, it looks like their attraction isn’t founded on respect for each others’ work – Paul said in an interview that he hasn’t seen any of his girlfriend’s movies, even megahit Twilight.”Honestly, I haven’t seen any of her movies and know nothing, really, about her work,” she said. “I think she likes me more because I’ve never seen any of her stuff.” More »
Getting kicked off of American Idol sucks – you’ve lost your chance at the record deal prize offered up to the winner of the show. But every booted finalist’s role model is Jennifer Hudson, who rebounded from a surprise elimination in season 3 (eventual winner: Fantasia) to star in Dreamgirls and win an Oscar. The most recent bootees from this season of Idol, Pia Toscano and Paul McDonald, clearly got a class in good PR. The strategy? Immediately hook up with someone famous so that your name stays out there. More »
Here’s the latest news on the American Idol front: wiry crooner Paul McDonald was sent home, Jacob Lusk has apparently spent some time in jail (for riding the LA metro without a ticket and then skipping his court date, the most innocuous offense ever), and Rihanna‘s now a country artist. She performed her new song “California King Bed,” which she originally debuted at the Academy of Country Music awards, on the show last night. It’s not half bad! More »
