Jim Carrey’s Daughter Auditioned For American Idol

Show business often becomes a family business, with famous actors and actresses opening the doors for their younger relatives. Having Julia Roberts as an aunt couldn’t have hurt when Emma Robers was trying to land her first acting gig, and the adorable Apatow girls got their start as child actresses by playing their mom’s kids in their dad’s movies. So it seems a little strange that Jim Carrey’s daughter Jane is starting her quest for a life of fame and fortune the same way someone with no connections would; auditioning on American Idol.

Jane is twenty-four and currently works as a waitress as she raises her toddler son. While being a young ambitious waitress isn’t unique for a contestant’s background (Kelly Clarkson was a waitress when she first entered the competition), Jane’s pre-audition conversation quickly became unique when Jennifer Lopez remembered she had met Jane when she was little while working with her dad on In Living Color. Not many contestant can say they had a previous meeting with a member of the star panel. Jennifer’s reaction to the realization she’d known this grown woman as a baby was greatl she tried to laugh it off but her entire face seemed to scream, “Oh my god, I’m old!”

Whether it was her pedigree or he talent Jane was ushered through to the next round. Her rendition of “Something to Talk About” (which is definitely on the top ten list of overdone songs on American Idol) was strong at points and flat at others, but I agree with Randy’s assessment she has potential. She wasn’t the star of the night, but it isn’t uncommon for the judges to pass a contestant along with a less then perfect audition assuming the weak moments were the result of nerves.

It would have been fun if Jim had been outside the audition room to help her dance with her winning ticket, but she did call her dad to let him know the good news. He was excited for her, but they really should have made the call a face-chat. What good is Jim Carrey exuberance without Jim Carrey faces?

Last night’s season premiere of American Idol brought legions of hopefuls out to Savannah, Georgia to try their skill in front of the judges. Because there were so many auditions, I’ve condensed my thoughts into the ancient, pithy, Japanese form known as haiku. How efficient is that?

Ready for an American Idol “where are they now?”? Eighth season winner Kris Allen is apparently spending his time hanging out with some jester bros and attempting to rap. Oh, and he’s grown a weird mustache.

This video shows Kris and two of his friends rapping to a bizarre dubstep remix of “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.” I wouldn’t say that the video has ruined Christmas, but it sure has tried — especially because Kris immediately admits that he can’t rap.

In addition to wearing fedoras and “busting rhymes,” Kris is apparently in the middle of recording his second album, the follow-up to 2010′s self-titled work. Hopefully it isn’t a holiday record, because, if it is, god help us all.

First Look: Nikki Reed’s Gorgeous Wedding Dress And Ring

Twilight actress Nikki Reed wed American Idol contestant Paul McDonald over the weekend at a private ranch in Malibu. US Magazine released this photo of the couple, which will cover their new issue, on stands Friday.

Nikki’s Tocaro dress had a 72-inch train, which isn’t quite what you think of when you hear, “ranch attire.” The best part of the wedding has to be that Nikki’s man of honor was DJ Qualls. DJ Qualls, you guys! He outdoes Kristen Wiig as a member of a wedding party any day.

Nikki and Paul met only last March, and got engaged only months after they’d started dating. Here’s a photo of Nikki’s brand new wedding ring:

Here’s the even-more-depressing thing about Thomas Lennon‘s tweet. Thomas (of The State and Reno 911 fame) is 41 years old. A person 15 years younger than him would 26. And 26 is the high end of the age spectrum for people who are cast in singing competitions.

So really, people who are 26 could lament that people five years older than them complain about striving attain last-chance success. Happy careers, everyone with singing aspirations!

‘Entourage’ and 8 Other TV Shows That Don’t Need to Become Movies

Mark Wahlberg, the executive producer of Entourage, announced that although this is the show’s final season on HBO, there’s a movie in the works. Considering that Entourage has been running on fumes for the last two seasons, a movie seems like the absolute last thing that this series needs, but I guess it means that Jerry Ferrara can wring a few more minutes out of his career. The truth is, not all TV shows need to be made into movies. In addition to Entourage, here are eight more TV shows that would not work on the big screen.

Boyfriend of the Week: Simon Cowell

Don’t worry, you didn’t miss a sneak preview episode of The X Factor or a stealthy appearance on American Idol. Simon Cowell is my Boyfriend Of The Week because I miss him. Because his absence on the TV has left a hole in my heart that’s as black and as true as his sense of humor.

People were so quick to say that this season of Idol was better than ever, what with J. Lo playing the cool aunt you go to when your mom’s being a total bitch and you need to borrow doorknocker hoops or get fitted for a NuvaRing®, Randy playing your uncle who used to tour with Journey and won’t let you forget it, and Steven Tyler playing the mystic old lady you met out during that Joshua Tree weekend who ceremonially kills her own chickens and wears their tail feathers in her hair to absorb their life energy.

But as the season dragged on, it became more and more apparent that we were just watching a bunch of helicopter parents. We were watching the completely bullshit message of Bieber’s Never Say Never in action, that message being that everyone has a Bieber within him, and you just have to want to be a Bieber bad enough to make that a reality. Even when Randy suddenly decided to use the wonderfully boozy Haley Reinhart as his landing pad, he descended upon her without any logical reason. The randomness of his criticisms (she chose a song that wasn’t on the radio yet; she sang songs from different genres; she sang a song that wasn’t for her; she should growl more; she should growl less) just illuminated the probability that even he doesn’t understand why he doesn’t like her. All I can make out is that she’s kind of like his Tracy Flick— that she has come to stand in for something he finds upsetting, and maybe it’s a message about himself.

But Simon, Simon always knew why he didn’t like you. Maybe it was your tragic personality or your even more tragic blind spot about your likability. Maybe it was an inbred cheesiness that you couldn’t escape, no matter how profound the song you chose. Maybe it was that he didn’t believe he could make money off of you. Maybe it was because your parents had raised you to be a horrible pageant child with a soulless flipper of a smile and the cheap, cold metal of trophies running through your veins. Maybe it was because you kept talking about how god was looking out for you during a televised singing contest. And maybe it was for as something as simple as the way you dressed, or your hippie hookah lamp mic stand.

The bottom line is, he knew. People made fun of Simon’s hard nipples poking against his v-neck shirts, but you know what those pencil erasers spoke of to me? They spoke of conviction. And conviction is the result of knowing yourself; knowing something about the value of others is merely a byproduct.

I’m not the only one in my house that misses Simon. First of all, I believe my dog Christmas misses him because she saw how much he loves dogs in the episode where he adoringly took an auditioning contestant’s Shih Tzu into his lap, and also because he regularly gives money and vocal support to dog foundations. Second of all, not a week goes by that I don’t hear Brent yelling about how if Simon were there this season he would tell Scotty McCreery to stop holding his microphone like he’s playing a skin flute or that he would tell James Durbin to stop acting like he invented hair metal light or he would tell Pia Toscano that the phonebook would be more exciting to watch singing the phonebook. Brent will usually get worked up into such a state that he can’t even watch the judges deliver their anti-criticisms, instead choosing to distract himself with one of the many super fucking dry books on ancient Greece that he’s been checking out from the library. (I prefer this phase to the one where he was trying to learn how to speak ancient Greek by repeating back dead vowel sounds from the computer for hours at a time).

So my actual boyfriend has the same hole in his heart— if not quite as big, then surely as black, as black as Simon Cowell’s late 1980’s flattop. And together we will await Simon’s return to TV in the fall, when I can’t believe I’m going to get involved (and accordingly get Brent involved) in another reality TV singing snow. These things are real commitments, you know? Maybe I’ll lay off Jewel’s in the meantime.
