Between MC Hammer – excuse us, King Hammer – dissing Jay-Z in his video “Better Run Run” (which in no way is a bid for relevance and is totally based on an actual beef) and Amy Winehouse‘s slurpy cover of “It’s My Party,” we’re having a really hard time deciding how to make our ears bleed this morning. After you graduate college, you may decide to travel the road less taken. You know what that means: no temping for you, you’re going to start your own tech business, or become a graphic illustrator, or perhaps a taxidermist. And your parents? Well, they might fall into that category of which Will Smith once rapped about.
And in the off chance that your parents don’t just “understand” why they threw $40k down the hole so you could apply for grants to put on your gallery show of menstruation dollies, you don’t have to feel alone anymore. A new web documentary series called “How to Explain It To My Parents” showcases 5 abstract artists trying to explain to their parents what they do for a living. CMJ Interview: Miniboone
It’s not easy to get reccomended by The Village Voice, but the New York punkpop group Miniboone may be the exception. Called “an enchanting mesh of old-school energy and new-school melody” by the Voice and “joyous power-pop” by NPR the 5-piece guy group gets their shows regularly listed in music blogs and local papers alike. Gearing up to release some new songs after the success of their first EP, Big Changes, Miniboone is taking the stage for several nights at CMJ. We spoke with Craig Barnes and Doug Schrashun (both guitar, keyboard, and vocals along with a third member, James Keary. Alexa Meade: Acrylic On People
We are totally obsessed with the artwork of Alexa Meade, who doesn’t have art imitating life but the other way around. You see, Alexa’s canvases are her subjects bodies, which she paints over with broad, flat acrylic brushstrokes, making them look indistinguishable from pictures. New trailer for Angels and Demons – watch!
I am VERY excited about this movie, mostly because Dan Brown’s earlier book made into a movie, “The Da Vinci Code”, was so dang disappointing, and this book is about ten times better than Da Vinci (take my word for it – you need to read it!). Here’s the newest trailer:
