According to Brooklynvegan, this year’s free July 4 outdoor concert at Battery Park will feature Conor Oberst. Jenny Lewis will open. “This year this event is not ticketed, but space is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.” How do you think it will compare to last year’s show with Sonic Youth and The Feelies? Ted Leo Playing Free Show Tonight
One of my favorite musicians of all time, the illustrious Ted Leo, will be playing a free show tonight with his band the Pharmacists at Castle Clinton in Battery Park. Even though it’s free you need to get a ticket and can do so starting at 5 p.m. at Castle Clinton. Free Shows Tonight
Bluegrassy folk rock band the Avett Brothers are playing a free show tonight at Rockefeller Park in Battery Park at 7 p.m. Also tonight is Olabelle Rootsy at Madison Square Park at 7 p.m. At Stuyvesant Town Slavic Soul party will be playing at 6 p.m. and eighties hip-hop group Brand Nubian will be at Brower Park in Brooklyn at 7 p.m…. While many people are going away, including me (I’m hitting up the Jazz Festival in Montreal!), there is tons going on in NYC for your listening pleasure:

Getting into Sonic Youth
Sonic Youth and the reunited Feelies are playing a free show on July 4 as part of the River to River Festival in Battery Park. BUT, you can’t just waltz in; you need a ticket. And how to get said ticket? On June 12 at noon, hop onto the River to River website to make a reservation for tickets (2 is the max). So many venues host (mostly) free shows in the summertime, it’s hard to keep up. There’s McCarren Pool, Central Park, and Prospect Park. But then there’s also Castle Clinton in Battery Park, the Winter Garden at the World Financial Center, and the South Street Seaport.
