Retellings of fairy tales are all the rage these days, and there’s a good reason for that. Fairy tales hit something primal inside us, so they’re always relevant, and Disney aside, they’re always just a tiny bit scary. There have been loads of retellings of fairy tales around before Beastly and Red Riding Hood hit the scene, though. Here are some of our favorites. Get ready to take your once upon a time and send it to some really interesting places… More »
“To adapt or not to adapt?” This question is less relevant now that many of Hollywood’s latest film offerings seem to build in some way on stories we already know. Now the dilemma for writers is, do they stick to the recognizable details, or strike out in an entirely new direction?
Two new releases have retooled beloved fairy tales for the teen set: Beastly, which came out last week, and Red Riding Hood, which hit theaters today. Both initially aim for darker takes on the stories, with mature protagonists, yet before the movie is over each has fallen back on details from the classic versions. More »
This weekend I went to see Beastly in theaters because my boyfriend was covering it for his job and needed the moral support. Considering that the movie has been delayed for months, I’ve had a lot of time to consider the filmmakers’ questionable choice of using tattoos and scars to make Alex Pettyfer‘s character “ugly.” As you can see from the photo, poor Kyle Kingston is cursed by a witch (Mary-Kate Olsen) to be utterly revolting to all eyes. He’ll be stuck in this form if, after a year, he has found no woman who can say, “I love you.” Except, he looks more like the hot biker guy your parents warned you against and who you totally want to go after. Vanessa Hudgens certainly doesn’t look repulsed here. More »
We admit that we felt a little bit dirty after watching the trailer for Beastly, the modern spin of Beauty and the Beast starring Vanessa Hudgens and newcomer hunk Alex Pettyfer. Not because we suddenly found ourselves with an uncontrollable need to see a film with Mary-Kate Olsen as a witch channeling Taylor Momsen, but because Alex was so freakin’ hot…but at 20-years-old, he makes us feel like cougars. Dude is 2 years younger than Zac Efron!! More »
We’re keeping our fingers crossed that newcomer Alex Pettyfer does a passable job in Beastly, that new Beauty and the Beast remake that also stars Vanessa Hudgens, because lord knows we don’t expect her to pull her own weight in this film. And the fact that making a guy bald with face tats is some producers idea of “ugly” is a little bit sketch, considering this dude supposedly lives in New York, where he could just join a metal band… More »

A new video from behind-the-scenes of Beastly hit the internet yesterday. It shows bits from older interviews that stars Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer did before, but there’s some great new footage from the film – including lots of awesome shots of Mary-Kate Olsen in full-on witchy mode! She looks amazing with her dark eye makeup and loads of blonde hair. She also wears a black bob wig that looks great too!
I can’t wait to see this film. I think… More »

Mary-Kate Olsen spent the past weekend in Montreal filming her latest movie, Beastly. Adapted from the YA novel of the same name, which in turn is adapted from the fairy tale Beauty & the Beat, the film also stars High School Musical alum Vanessa Hudgens.
Due to copyright issues, I cannot post the photos of MK filming here. However, you can check them out at Olsen Files. MK looked great ( and very witch-like) in her dramatic black coat and… More »
Mary-Kate’s latest project, Beastly is based on the best-selling YA book by Alex Flinn of the same name. The book updates the traditional fairy tale of Beauty and the Beast and puts it in modern-day New York. The book is inspired by the many different tellings of Beauty and the Beast – not just the Disney version! – so it may be a bit different than we’re used to.

Mary-Kate Olsen will join the cast of Beastly, a modern day take on the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale, Variety reported today. Beastly is based on the Alex Flinn fantasy novel that moves the story of the Beast and Belle to modern day New York City.
The project, which is being put together by CBS films, will also star High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens as the fair maiden.
