I first got turned on to Ben Sollee when I saw him play in the Sparrow Quartet with Allison Washburn and Bela Fleck at Castle Clinton. First River to River Show Was Yesterday
Mirah & Spectratone International at Castle Clinton 2008

It was a beautiful day outside yesterday, perfect for the inaugural River to River concert at Castle Clinton in Battery Park. Mirah and Spectratone International started things off quite nicely. Mirah is an accomplished singer songwriter and her newer stuff almost has her sounding like a female Beirut. She relished in the bouncy, Eastern European-esque tunes of the band and her lilting voice was a perfect complement.

Lots More Free Summer Shows

So many venues host (mostly) free shows in the summertime, it’s hard to keep up. There’s McCarren Pool, Central Park, and Prospect Park. But then there’s also Castle Clinton in Battery Park, the Winter Garden at the World Financial Center, and the South Street Seaport.
