Beyonce Stepped Out Last Night, So What Was Blue Ivy Up To?

By now you’ve already seen just how hot Beyonce’s post-baby body is looking, but with all the attention on Beyonce, no one seemed to wonder what Blue Ivy may have been up to last night. It was her first big night without mom around, so that should be hitting the headlines, too.

Beyonce killed it in an Alice Temperly dress and Louboutin heels, all while supporting husband, Jay-Z‘s concerts for the United Way of New York City and the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation. As Beyonce attended Carnegie Hall with her husband for the first of two benefit concerts last night, it appeared that Blue Ivy was left to her own devices. So what did Blue Ivy and her nannies probably do last night? We have some ideas.

You know who doesn’t make enough money? Beyoncé. It’s like someone give this woman a raise already! Luckily, that (brave) someone is Simon Cowell who supposedly stepped forward and offered Bey $500 million dollars to join The X Factor as a judge for the next five years. Just to recap for everyone, that’s 500 followed by six more zeros. If she accepts the job, it puts her and Jay-Z’s net worth at a little over one billion dollars. To put things in perspective, that’s like one zillion more dollars than a blogger makes.

According to the rumors, Beyoncé’s considering taking the offer. Because, why not? Why not make a few hundred million dollars judging a talent show. Plus, she would get to hang out with Simon Cowell. And no one pulls off a fitted black t-shirt quite like him. Oh, also she might need the extra income if the stories about her hiring six nannies for Blue Ivy are true. Extra, but necessary, help does not pay for itself.

But there is a downside to the whole affair. Not only does Simon get bored with his judges easily (goodbye Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger), but he’s also apparently courting Mariah Carey for the position. Let’s get the obvious out of the way. Cowell clearly has a thing for divas with new babies. If Whitney Houston popped one out now, she’d be on the short list too.

Now the not-so-obvious question. If both Mariah and Beyoncé said yes to the position, would he hire both of them? Is there room for two huge divas on one reality show? Has that ever even been attempted before? Are there even spotlights big enough to shine on both of them at once?

So many questions, so few answers. All I want to know is who you would prefer to see as the judge.

Jay-Z Is Going To Keep Using The Word ‘Bitch,’ After All

When I first heard that Jay-Z had supposedly vowed to stop using the word “bitch” following the birth of his daughter, I was skeptical. Jay-Z uses that word a lot, and it seems inconsistent with his image to do a sudden 180 like that. After years of unapologetically using it to refer to lesser rappers, other people’s daughters, and even the mother of his own magic child, would he really let a baby change his mind on what is, for him, a basic element of language, to be used interchangeably with “woman” in both positive and negative contexts?

No, Hova wouldn’t. “That poem and story are fake,” the unrepentant swear sayer told The New York Daily News of the poem allegedly written by him that’s currently going around on the internet. He’s nothing if not consistent.

Is it okay for rappers to use that word? As a feminist, I’ve often struggled to reconcile my dislike of that term with my appreciation for rappers who use it. It’s become such a common syntactical trope that most MCs don’t think twice about it, even using it in songs where they’re supposed to be praising the “bitch” in question. Take Jay-Z’s verse in the recently released “That’s My Bitch,” where he’s basically like, “bitch, you should be in a museum!”

I imagine Beyonce is cool with this, or he would have heard about it from her. Anyway, my point is, Jay-Z is almost definitely not going to back down on his use of the term, and we can probably expect a defensive statement from him soon about how everyone in hip-hop uses it, it’s not necessarily disrespectful, that’s just how he raps, etc.

In re-promotion of her album 4, this is the photo of Beyoncé being used to remind those of us who haven’t bought it to pick it up stat. When the photo was released this week it stunned critics and fans alike because of the lightness of her skin. The New York Post has called the photo “shocking” while other sites are condemning the artist and new mother for not “representing” her African American ethnicity.

It’s hard to tell whether it’s the lighting that was used during the shoot or if the image was digitally altered afterward, but either way it’s definitely not a clear image of Beyoncé’s true skin tone.

This isn’t the first time she has been slammed in the media for her dishonest coloring. In 2008, L’Oreal was accused of lightening her skin in a Feria hair color ad. In that case it might be easier to blame marketing instead of Beyoncé. But one would like to hope that her contract would allow her to have a say in how she’s represented. If she really is who she claims to be in her song lyrics, you’d think she’d step in and point out that there’s a lot of false advertising going on in these advertisements.

But let’s look at the varying shades of Beyoncé to see how we really feel about her skin shade debacle.

To make even more of a connection between the two, Laura Carmichael who plays Lady Edith Crawley said in an interview when talking about Beyoncé:

She’s a great feminist icon because she is smart, hard-working, sexy without being trashy and loves men but still retains her independence and power. When I’m in a tricky situation I often think: “What would Beyoncé do?” It helps.

Takeway? If you wait around long enough, everything will eventually finds its perfect mate.

Blue Ivy Carter Is The Youngest Person Ever To Appear On The Billboard Charts

Blue Ivy Carter is only five days old, but she already has a collection of possessions worth many times what most people make in a year. As if that wasn’t enough, now she’s received a gift from her father that money can’t buy: the distinction of being the youngest person ever to be credited on a song appearing on the Billboard charts. The only way things could get any better for her is if she knew what the fuck was going on.

As previously reported, Jay-Z released a heartwarming track called “Glory” about the birth of his new daughter when she was only two days old, crediting her for the coos and cries he sampled. Today, that track debuted at #74 on Billboard‘s R&B/Hip-Hop song chart, making “B.I.C.” the youngest person ever to “earn” such a distinction.

The previous record holder in this area was Stevie Wonder‘s daughter Aisha, whose baby noises could be heard on his 1975 song “Isn’t She Lovely.” But she was not officially credited on the track, and it didn’t hit the Billboard charts until a full two years later.

How crazy is it going to be for young Blue Ivy when she’s old enough to actually be aware that her little baby voice was heard by millions of people before she even understood the concept of “dropping a single”? So crazy. I imagine this could be really cool or really creepy for her, depending what kind of person she turns out to be.

Blue Ivy Carter might not be able to talk yet, but that hasn’t stopped her from obtaining a hip hop handle (“B.I.C.“) and landing a plum guest spot on a new track by her father called “Glory.”

That’s right. During the time in which most new dads would be smoking cigars and trying to catch up on sleep, Jay-Z was putting the finishing touches on a Neptunes-produced song celebrating the birth of his new baby daughter. In the song’s heartfelt refrain, he raps:

The most amazing feeling I feel/Words can’t describe what I’m feeling for real/Baby, I paint the sky blue/My greatest creation was you

I like how he describes his daughter as “a younger smarter faster me/a pinch of Hov, a whole glass of B.” Something tells me it’s going to be more than a pinch.

Later in the track, Hova references what must have been a painful experience for him and Beyonce: before getting pregnant with Blue Ivy, Bey had an earlier pregnancy end in a miscarriage:

You was made in Paris and mama woke up the next day and shot her album package / Last time the miscarriage was so tragic / We was afraid you disappeared but nah baby, you magic

He also discusses his own father’s failings, while at the same time vowing to be the best parent possible to Blue Ivy, who can be heard crying in the background. I challenge you to listen below and not get at least a little bit emotional.
