The Wizard of Oz is being re-released on DVD today (Tuesday, September 29) in honor of its 70th anniversary and to celebrate they are having a screening in Central Park with lots of special musical guests: ?uestlove (of The Roots), Jennifer Hudson, Julianne Hough, Bilal, “and a band assembled especially for the show” will be performing contemporary interpretations of classic songs from the film. The Pavement Reunion shows have grown: there are now four scheduled for 2010 in Central Park. Strangely, the first (September 21, 2010) is listed as being at Summerstage, while the rest are at Rumsey Playfield. The three other dates are September 22, 23, and 24 all in 2010. It’s really not a rumor this time. Amid all the buzz about Pavement’s reunion, they have officially confirmed the September 21, 2010 date AND tickets go on presale TOMORROW. I don’t think I’ve ever bought tickets for something a year in advance, but I am sure as hell about to.

Brooklyn Knitting Factory Opening, Les Savy Fav Playing

The Knitting Factory had been a fixture of downtown New York for decades until it closed last year. After much delay, it is finally reopening in Brooklyn, at 361 Metropolitan Ave. in Williamsburg to be exact.
To celebrate their grand opening tomorrow (Wednesday September 9), Les Savy Fav will be playing. It’s all sold out (probably to industry insiders), but the bar will still be open to the public.

Electric Zoo Festival

Electric Zoo, New York’s Electronic Music Festival, is coming to Randall’s Island this weekend (Saturday and Sunday, September 5 & 6). Highlights include Armin Van Buuren, Tiga, Deadmau5, David Guetta, and Junior Boys. You can see the full lineup here.

Longtime record retailer J&R Music is hosting J&R MusicFest this year on August 27-29. There will be three days of in-store and outdoor performances at their store at 23 Park Row and at City Hall Park. Highlights include The Smithereens, Clipse, and KRS-One and Buckshot. Monsters of Folk is a folk supergroup comprised of Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and singer/songwriter M.Ward. The group has a self-titled debut album coming out on September 22. Beastie Boy Has Cancer, Jay-Z taking over at APW and Set Times

Adam Yauch, one of the Beastie Boys, has been diagnosed with havign a cancerous tumor. He is having surgery this week and the band has cancelled all future shows, including their headliging appearances at Lollapalooza in Chicago on August 8 and All Points West this weekend in New York. Lollapalooza has replaced the band with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Jay-Z will replace them on Friday, July 31 at All Points West. We wish Mr. Yauch a full recovery!!!

Last year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. free concert series at Wingate Field in Brooklyn saw the likes of Erykah Badu. This year includes Keyshia Cole and Anita Baker, among others. All shows are free and are on Mondays at 7:30 p.m. at Wingate Field (entrance on Brooklyn Ave. by Rutland Rd. and Winthrop St. in Brooklyn). Here’s the schedule:
