“Teenagers look to identify themselves as individuals and very often they’re quite rebellious,” Dr. Gilda said. “What you’re seeing now is her pushing the boundaries — pushing the boundaries of what it means to be a child, pushing almost into adulthood without being very subtle about it…she’s experimenting with how far she can go. Because she’s in the limelight, she’s put on display almost like she’s in a petting zoo and everyone is looking at her and commenting on far she’s pushing things but in essence she’s a little girl trying to grow up and in Hollywood where it’s typical for little girls for to try to grow up very quickly.”

So what can Miley do to avoid the pitfalls that have befallen so many child actors? Dr. Gilda has some words for her parents. “Parents have got to give her boundaries,” she said. And it’s not helping that dad Billy Ray Cyrus has lived in the spotlight himself. “I think they’re much more liberal about what’s okay and what’s not okay because they’ve seen so much and been around so much firsthand,” Dr. Gilda added. “I think they may have a different viewpoint than the average person in middle America.”

What Miley could use is a mentor or someone closer to her age — a 20-something actress or performer for example. “It would be great if she could have some mentors — somebody who she can look up to who is not her parent, because at 17 you don’t want to hear anything from your parents,” Dr. Gilda said. “But you have to find the right 20-something-year-old who would be willing to guide her and these might be in short supply. Certainly you don’t want someone like Britney Spears who has her own issues.”

Hopefully, Miley will find someone who can offer some friendly advice, and avoid falling in with a bad crowd — something Dr. Gilda said she’s apt to do. “At 17 you cannot think about the consequences of your behavior and that’s one of the problems with being 17 and out there and being pushed to the limit,” she explained.

Star Shrinking: Miley Needs A Mentor

And now Miley’s gone and done it again: dropping $3,000 on underwear that’s being described as “more Sex and the City than 17-year-old stuff.” Billy Ray thinks Miley is going to alienate her fan-base with this smutty behavior, or at least alienate the parents who let their kids buy all of Miley’s products. And while we understand his concern, we wouldn’t freak out just yet that she’s casting aside her wholesome image forever. 17-year-olds are naturally rebellious, and Miley could just be experimenting. So far there haven’t been any reports of alcohol or drug use (the worst thing she’s done is taken some provocative MySpace-y photos) and considering how long she’s been in the biz, that’s pretty impressive. Normal teenage stuff,

No, if we were Miley’s parents, we’d be more worried that the products being sold with her name on it could possibly poison young fans, which would definitely piss America’s parents off more than an alleged panty-buying spree.
