Coming out as gay is probably the biggest one, right up there with teen pregnancy and any other lifechanging event. It’s undoubtedly a difficult discussion to have, and one that many gay teens put off because they are afraid how their loved ones will react. But if it’s something that you’re contemplating, we have some advice on how to approach it.

Brianna, 26, was a senior in high school when she came out to her parents. Bri was lucky enough to have a therapist at the time — her parents had sent her to see someone to deal with panic attacks — something many teens may not have. Bri came out to her therapist and the doctor coached her through coming out to her family and friends. “The most important thing she told me was that the people who know me will pretty much know I’m gay,” she said. “It’s not going to be as much of a shock to them as you think.”

Bri’s therapist also told her that when her parents were ready to know whether or not she was gay, they would ask her. And ultimately, that was exactly what happened. One night, Bri was in the middle of a fight with her mom, “which happened frequently in high school,” she said. Bri recalled that they were fighting over something relating to Boo, Bri’s best friend who she was also dating, although her parents didn’t know about the initimate side of their relationship. “My mom just came out and asked me, ‘Are you gay?’ And I said, ‘Mom, I am. I’m gay,’” she said. Bri’s mom stormed out of the room, not knowing how to handle the situation. Her dad later came in to talk to her. He was comforting and reassured her that both her parents would love her no matter what. “He said all the things you want your dad to say in that situation,” Bri told us.

While traumatic, Bri’s coming out was ultimately a good experience, and her mother has come around over the years to accept Bri for who she is. Bri said she saw a change several years after she came out, when she was graduating college and considering breaking up with her longterm girlfriend, Boo. “My mom realized that even if I wasn’t with Boo, I was still going to be with women,” she said. “She finally got me. Our relationship got a lot stronger from that point on.”

Having gone through it herself, and talked about the process with her friends and girlfriends who also had to come out to family and friends, Bri has some tips for anyone thinking of tackling this delicate topic:

Start with people close to you
“If you’re not comfortable with telling certain people or if you’re really afraid of the way that certain people will react to you, maybe you’re not ready to come out to those people,” Bri said. Practice by coming out to your really close friends, the ones who you know will never judge you or treat you differently. Then move on to the people who you think should know, like your parents.

Be confident
If you’re sure about what you’re saying, the people who you’re telling will be more ready to accept your decision. Frequently, parents who are not ready to accept that their child is gay will think it’s “just a phase,” and if you’re wishy-washy about how you present it and yourself, they’ll be more apt to feel that way.

Seek help
Although you may not be lucky enough to get help from a personal therapist, there are lots of places to seek help. Schools offer counselors and many are setting up support groups for gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual and questioning teens and young people. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and support or answers to your questions.

New York Magazine spent 125 minutes with Lady Gaga and, per the usual, she used the time to shock, awe and manipulate the media a la predecessor Madonna. Here are are some highlights of New York’s Gaga encounter:

On her pre-fame starving artist days: “I wasn’t a lazy drug addict. I would make demo tapes and send them around; then I would jump on my bike and pretend to be Lady Gaga’s manager. I’d make $300 at work and spend it all on Xeroxes to make posters.”

On preparing for shows at New York’s Knitting Factory with one-time collaborator Lady Starlight: “Lady Starlight and I would spin vinyl in my apartment, sewing our bikinis for the show and listening to David Bowie and the New York Dolls. We thought, ‘What could we do to make everybody so jealous?’ We did it, and everybody was so jealous. And they still are.”

On relocating from New York to Los Angeles: “What am I supposed to do, canoodle with celebrities at a nightclub, with a lemon-drop Midori in my hand? It’s not the same as being in a bar that smells like urine with all your really smart New York friends.”

On her favorite food: “I’m a pop singer. I don’t like food at all.”

On the weirdest thing she ever signed: “A dick, at a gay club.”

In the comments section, someone by the moniker “DEKALBGUY86″ took a moment to clear up some things about Gaga, aka Stefani Germanotta:

1. Stefani is not bisexual, she merely says that for press.

2. I would highly doubt that she told her parents to stop giving her money. They, just like most parents of NYU students, funded her “education.” (Yes, that includes a nasty drug habit in the back rooms of Lit)

3. She didn’t “drop out” of Tisch. She switched programs and started working hard core on her music.

4. Yes, us smart New Yorkers miss you and your trashy self too. What happened hunny? Pic up the phone.

Lady Gaga, pick up the Telephone! Remember where you came from, yo.

Lindsay Lohan is the cover girl for the December 2008 edition of Harper’s Bazaar. In the candid interview, “Lindsay Lohan: Myth vs Reality“, Lindsay opens up about her love life, her family and what’s planned for her career. The photoshoot is amazing – the third to last in the lookbook is fabulous!

Lindsay Lohan Harper’s Bazaar Video:

If the video does not play for you, you can watch it here

The interview was conducted in early October at Chateau Marmont, a hotel Lindsay admits to living in for 2 years “Who blogs that much money on a hotel?” she reflects. But Lindsay knows it was her own choices that led to the state her life was in:

“I did it to myself, and I have to deal with the consequences. I’m thankful for what I can take out of it. Now I feel clear. That’s my past, and I’m a different person now. I have goals and I’m working to achieve them. I’m not hanging out with people who are out every night getting fucked up.”

Lindsay admits, with a smile, that she’s happy. But she’s not yet ready to talk publicly about her relationship with Samantha Ronson. Why? Because she is worried about jinxing it: “the second I start talking about whomever I’m seeing, a month or two later it’s failed.”

Lindsay says it’s “obvious” who she’s seeing, and that it’s “no shock to anyone” that she and Sam have been seeing each other for “quite some time.” Check out this cute photo of the couple in Vegas! In a rare candid moment, Lindsay says:

“She’s a wonderful person and I love her very much.”

Being candid does not stop there. Lindsay says she’s “maybe” been with a girl before, and would “maybe, yeah” classify herself as bisexual, though not as lesbian. She’d rather not classify herself at all, but instead go on “appreciat[ing] people” of all kinds. Would Lindsay marry? Perhaps eventually. Kids? When she’s ready, when her “shit” is in line.

Lindsay says her family has been very supportive of her, regardless of whether she’s with a guy or a girl. Lindsay even provides guidance to her younger sister Ali, telling her to not be “afraid of who she wants to be,” using her own choices as an example of living that. To her father, Lindsay says his actions have hurt her. Lindsay insists Michael is not a bad guy, but just someone making “bad choices” – they are not talking right now.

Lindsay Lohan, as we know from her last interview, admits to being a TV junkie. So, what does she watch? Gossip Girl!! And on her blogging, it’s to let people know who she is inside.

“I don’t want people to think that I’m just an empty fucking whatever.”

The interview continues by talking about Lindsay’s goals for her music career and her acting, and the high praise that Rick Schwartz gives to Lindsay for Labor Pains – how he’s “spread[ing] the gospel of Lindsay.” Lindsay is sure she’ll find the right project to recapture the praise of Hollywood – that she’s a fighter, is “up for a challenge”, and will keep going.
