You know those posters that say All I know about life, I learned in kindergarten? Well, all I know about sex, I learned from fan fiction. I was 12 when I first got into fandom, and about 14 when I started reading graphic fan fiction. Fan Service: What ‘Bones’ Teaches Us About Killing Off Beloved TV Characters
Since I didn’t get to write a Fan Service for last week, this week will have two entries. Friday’s will hopefully be lighter, since today’s is about death — losing TV characters forever.
For the past few weeks, Bones showrunner Hart Hanson had hinted that in last Thursday’s episode (one before the season finale), a major player would die by sniper bullet. Cue the panicked reactions: Which actors had gigs lined up for next year? Which character could conceivably finish their time on the procedural after May 12? Marlee Matlin Takes Issue with Depiction of Deafness on ‘Bones’
The conceit for last night’s episode of Bones, “The Signs in the Silence,” was that the murder suspect is, in one character’s words, “a deaf mute.” The thirty-second promo with this piece of information drew ire from Deaf actress Marlee Matlin and other Deaf and hearing Twitter users, as “deaf mute” is a derogatory term in that it implies that Deaf people are incapabale of communicating. I’m a nerd, so I love seeing TV showrunners quibbling and commiserating over Twitter. ‘Bones’ to Change Name to ‘Abs’ In Bid To Get ‘Jersey Shore’ Star
Actually, let’s just change the name of this show to LOLZ: David Boreanaz‘s hit show Bones is trying to get Jersey Shore‘s The Situation to begin his acting career on their program. “We’re trying to get The Situation to play a murder victim,” (creator Hart) Hanson told reporters in a not-at-all stunt to drum up ratings, “A guido is killed and Booth and Brennan enter that world to find out what happens.” More »
