Cry Me A River: My Neverending Crush On Justin Timberlake

It started with the “Tearin Up My Heart” music video as I was lying face down on my grandparents’ beach house floor while my mom rubbed aloe on my freshly fried eight-year-old back. I saw a bleach blonde Justin Timberlake serenading me. I don’t know what it was about that spongy, yellow curls that got me, but I was obsessed.

At first, it was a normal childhood crush. But things took a turn for the worst as the posters plastered up on my walls, and *NSYNC stickers covered my notebooks and binders. I had t-shirts, keychains, and issues of Tiger Beat everywhere. I would sneak downstairs after bedtime to watch *NSYNC music videos just so I could see Justin’s face. I wrote letters.

Sadly, they garnered no response.

I had a gigantic poster of that curly-Q above my bed, and I legitimately thought he knew I existed. I got mad at other girls who were crushing on him too. Why couldn’t they fall for JC Chasez? I mean, let’s be real, he’s no Justin. But seriously, back off my man. For my ninth birthday, my “friend” Megan bought me a Backstreet Boys CD. Needless to say, we were no longer friends.

On that same birthday, there was one more present from my parents. *NSYNC concert tickets. I don’t remember my reaction because I’m pretty sure I blacked out at the very moment I opened the envelope. In addition to the tickets, my parents also got a limo to take me and my friend (with our moms) to the concert. We even sipped on sparkling grape juice. It was fabulous, and Justin of course wanted a classy girl. Even though we had lawn seats and were nowhere near JT, that was the best night of my life at the age of nine.

In 2000, JT and the boys released No Strings Attached, which now looking back has a lot more adult themes that we thought. I mean, Justin in that “Bye Bye Bye” video was good stuff. My whole family took me to that concert in Atlanta, and I will be forever grateful that my dad and brother sat through it as I screamed my face off. Allegedly, I was so excited to hear Justin live that I threw up. But there is no evidence to those claims so I don’t think it happened.

When Justin and Britney Spears started dating, I didn’t believe it. I thought it was what I now know to be a publicity stunt. It had to be fake, mainly because Justin was mine, and Britney was a whore. I couldn’t stand it. Their breakup was one of the best days ever, especially because I knew he’d never have to wear that heinous denim outfit ever again.

Before MTV made beaucoup bucks off Jenelle Evans and the other Teen Moms, the most famous sixteen-year-old to get knocked up was Britney Spears‘ little sister Jamie Lynn Spears. But after the tabloid hubbub of her engagement to and breakup with babydaddy Casey Aldridge, Jamie Lynn disappeared. She’s resurfaced to write a piece for Glamour about turning 21 and how the last thing she was feeling was happiness when she announced her pregnancy with her sister and mom on the cover of OK! magazine.

Unlike fellow young mom Bristol Palin, who has hemmed and hawed over where she went wrong with birth control, Jamie bravely admits that she simply didn’t have any.

I believe in safety and birth control as prevention. But like many young girls… I was really scared to go to the doctor. And I was on a Nickelodeon show, and it [felt] especially embarrassing to ask someone to put me on birth control. I didn’t want to ask my doctor, because she had a little girl.

The Nickelodeon kids have always been held in higher esteem than their Disney counterparts, who have drug problems and rehab stints under their belts. It’s no wonder that Jamie felt a more subtle pressure to present a wholesome image and felt that it couldn’t be publicized that she was having sex.

What’s also interesting is Jamie Lynn’s side of how she was portrayed during her pregnancy. With the big magazine announcement and her decision to keep the baby, it certainly seemed as if she were glamorizing teen pregnancy. After all, the family had been supportive of Britney having two children at the relatively young age of 24. However, Jamie Lynn apologizes here for “the young girls and the mothers who I probably confused and let down.”

If you reread her quotes from the big announcement in 2007, you can see that even in the beginning she was more resigned than overjoyed. “I’m the one who has to live with it for the rest of my life,” she said. “I put myself in this position, an adult position, so I have to act like an adult and take responsibility for what I did.” That means ducking out of the spotlight and not exploiting daughter Maddie with a reality show or staged paparazzi shots.

However, just because she wasn’t on MTV didn’t mean that Jamie Lynn wasn’t excited to watch 16 and Pregnant and its sequel Teen Mom. “When I saw MTV’s Teen Mom was coming out,” she writes, “I remember thinking, Oh my God, I cannot wait to see this show because there’s someone else out there.” Interestingly, she doesn’t comment on any of the teen moms’ troubles with the law, or their subsequent breakups with their children’s fathers.

I definitely recommend you read the whole essay at Glamour, because there’s no bullshit about what she was going through. “I was a kid who did a kid show,” she writes. “Then I went away and raised my child, and the world has never met me as an adult.” I for one am glad to meet this adult.

Last night, VH1 aired a very special episode of its ongoing documentary series Rock Docs: An hour dedicated to the decade-long run of MTV‘s Total Request Live, or as we lovingly knew it, TRL. I definitely recommend you check it out, because no matter your age it’s likely that you relied on TRL for your breaking music and movie news from 1998-2008.

VH1 got together former VJs Carson Daly, Quddus, Damien Fahy, Vanessa Minnillo, and others, plus artists like the Backstreet Boys and Mandy Moore to comment on the ups and downs of the show’s run. They cover everything from Columbine and 9/11 to stars’ breakdowns and hospitalizations. TRL was like being invited into celebrities’ private circle, but you also got the sense that the kids in the studio and clustered outside the MTV building controlled the action. As Kid Rock said, ”The TRL decade was so wrong, but it was very close to right.”

So, we’ve rounded up our ten favorite moments from last night—from quotes we’ve never heard before to crazy fans to when the folks at TRL knew that they had gone from reporting on pop culture to being a part of pop culture.

1. Carson Daly takes credit for Jessica Simpson: TRL‘s first big hits and frequent guests were the bubblegum pop set, and Carson believes that he played a big part in making Jessica Simpson a household name. He mentions how he heard one of her early power ballads — even though the first song of hers we heard was “I Think I’m in Love with You” — and brought it to the show’s producers. So, he acknowledged, he helped to get her famous faster than if she had just been playing on Radio Disney or somesuch.

2. Britney’s ass: It was a funny enough juxtaposition to see cute little Britney Spears interviewing Method Man and Redman while doing guest-host duties. But then Method Man told a hilarious story about how, while posing for a photo, he leaned in to Britney right as the camera flashed and whispered, ”You got a fat ass for a white girl.” Better yet, right after they snapped the photo, the teen pop queen turned around and said, straight-faced, “Thank you.”

3. “Tiffany the crazy *NSYNC girl”: No matter what the medium, you’ll always have way too passionate fans. Young Tiffany was one example that all of the VJs remembered well: She competed against another girl for the chance to see *NSYNC’s new video first, but the other girl had a better handle on random details like which doll was wearing a basketball jersey. When Carson laughed off Tiffany’s defeat, she growled, “I’ll kill you!”

4. Making it to Saturday Night Live: As proud as he was of Jessica Simpson, Carson seemed even prouder of when Jimmy Fallon introduced his Carson Daly impression on SNL in 2002. He later appeared in-character on TRL, down to the same outfit.

5. Nipplegate, the early years: The one mention that Da Brat got was for the time she hosted TRL wearing a shirt unbuttoned over a bra… a sheer bra. As one of the producers tells it, suddenly he heard in his ear, “Nipple!” But somehow back in 2000, this wasn’t as huge a deal as in 2004 when we got an eyeful of Janet Jackson‘s nipple. Sure, the producers alerted Da Brat and she apologized — and many think it wasn’t accidental at all — but no viewers were scarred.

Meme Alert: The Newsies Dance Set To Pop Music

This isn’t the newest meme, but it’s picked up speed lately: Setting the “Seize the Day” dance number from Newsies to pop songs from the likes of Lady Gaga and Taio Cruz. No matter what the song, as long as it has a rhythm, it magically appears as if tiny Christian Bale and the other news boys are grooving in a hot new music video. In some ways, it makes the meme a little less special — usually it’s the uniqueness that sets it apart — but in other ways it makes it endless fun. Like when you translate Nyan Cat into every nationality!

The latest is their take on LMFAO‘s “Everyday I’m Shufflin’,” and yes, it’s fantastic. But I didn’t want you guys to miss out on all the other great videos of the past few months, so I’ve compiled as many as possible.

Video: Britney Spears’ Son Dances To ‘Shake Your Groove Thing’

Whatever other criticisms people might reasonably make of Britney Spears, she was, at least for a while, a very good dancer, and it seems she’s passed that gene down to her son Sean Preston.

In a video Brit Brit posted to Youtube on Friday, her oldest son Sean Preston can be seen dancing his little heart out to the disco song “Shake Your Groove Thing,” even getting annoyed when his brother gets in the way of the TV. It’s not just some random little kid dance, either; he appears to have learned some decently complex moves from the video that would most likely be beyond the grasp of most six-year-olds. It makes even more sense when you remember that his dad Kevin Federline started out as a back-up dancer. He’s got it on both sides! Let’s just hope he did not inherit his dad’s penchant for fame-whoring or terrible white boy hip-hop.

Crushable Quotable: Ke$ha Says Writing Songs For Britney Is Better Than Drugs

Through all the brattiness and beard fetishizing, you have to remember that Ke$ha started out as a fairly successful songwriter for others, and for that, she deserves at least a modicum of respect. Not surprisingly, Ke$ha thinks so, too.

In a recent interview with MTV, the goddess of glittery garbage talked about how she wants to resurrect rock (via pop songs, oy) and maybe show a more vulnerable side of herself on her new album. She also discussed how it makes her feel each time she hears Britney Spears sing “Til The World Ends,” which she co-wrote with Dr. Luke, Max Martin, and Alexander Krolund:

That song just came on the radio and I have to say, I love hearing Britney Spears sing my lyrics, every single day. It never gets old. I get so excited. It’s better than any drug when you hear Britney Spears sing a song you wrote.

Better than brushing your teeth with a bottle of Jack? Better than “your love”?? Personally, I think the Eruo-housey “Til The World Ends” is the most annoying Britney song to come along in quite some time, but if it keeps Ke$ha off the harder stuff, I’m willing to support it.

Britney Spears is engaged to her former manager Jason Trawick, and the only person who might be allowed to have misgivings — her ex Kevin Federline – is “totally happy” for her. Instead, the complaining is coming from another Jason—Jason Alexander, the childhood friend she wed for less than three days back in 2004.

Yes, despite their 55-hour Vegas marriage that was a joke taken too far, Jason is telling Us Weekly, “I think it’s fake and people are afraid to say it.” He cites the fact that Jason was Britney’s manager, though her father Jamie Spears is currently her conservator:

If you look at all the pictures between them there is no connection. They look like they are going through the motions. It seems like a answer to the court thing. Sort of a nice way to sew it all up she marries her handler. That way she always has someone controlling her. It’s sort of sad.

“I know everyone wants me to be happy about this, but I’m not,” he adds. No, Jason, we honestly forget who you are until you release fame-whorey sound bites like this.

Considering that this photo of him at a Beverly Hills store opening from 2006 exists, Jason has nothing to bitch and moan about:

Check Out Britney Spears’ Extremely Diamond-y Engagement Ring

Newly engaged couple Britney Spears and Jason Trawick celebrated Jason’s 40th birthday in Las Vegas over the weekend, which provided the paps a nice opportunity to take zoomed-in pictures of the crazy expensive engagement ring he recently gave her. Here is one such picture:

And because I know you want to take a closer look at it, here’s a close-up provided by the ring’s designer, Neil Lane:

According to an interview Lane did with People, “Jason didn’t want an over-the-top ring with a giant stone,” so he opted instead for a medium-sized (but still kind of giant) stone set in a platinum ring. That ring, in turn, is set with many small stones that make it look “like a mini-crown,” because “she is his princess.” Just your average pop princess with an average platinum and diamond engagement ring. Nothing over-the-top about that.

And because I know you can’t get enough of Brit Brit’s OMG EXCITED face, here are a few more pictures of her and Jason looking very, very stoked on life (and, um, branded cake, and lollipops):

Crushable Quoteable: Kevin Federline Is Very Happy For Britney Spears

The general consensus about Britney Spears‘ engagement to Jason Trawick seems to be that the lady deserves a little happiness and stability. And ex-husband Kevin Federline, father of Brit’s two kids, totally agrees. In an interview on an Australian TV network, Kevin discussed the engagement news:

“I’m really happy for her — I think he’s a great guy. She’s happy; she’s doing really well. I want to say she’s in a good place. I haven’t spoken to her much since I’ve been over here — both of us have been busy with her being on tour — but I do know from talking to the kids and talking to the kids’ teachers that they’re doing really good. It’s a good step in the right direction. I’m totally happy for her.”

Kevin and Britney were married for a little less than three years, from late 2004 until the summer of 2007. She and Jason have been together for a while and their engagement came as a surprise to no one. Now if only they can work in some matching denim a la Britney’s Justin Timberlake years — then we can really believe they’re meant to be.
