Just because Dancing with the Stars and the UK’s Strictly Come Dancing are not taping at the moment doesn’t mean that judge Bruno Tonioli can’t be seen out and about.

He always looks so polished and fabulous when he appears on the shows. But when the paparazzi spotted him walking in Nottingham recently, he was dressed completely casual. Who would have imagined that we could see Bruno in sweat pants? I love it when I get to see that the celebrities are regular folks like us after all.

This week on Dancing With the Stars, the dancers starred in funny compaign ads to compete for our votes. They were totally to make fun of all the actual campaign ads we are bombarded with at the moment. Each one is funny by itself, but to see them all together is a lot of fun. My favorite is the one that says that Lance Bass is probably crazy…

I thought he was fun to watch and it was obvious that he was really enjoying himself on the dance floor. It’s a shame he had to be voted off.

He did manage to get Bruno Tonioli out on the dance floor at the end of the show. It was so cool to get to see Bruno dance a bit!

And Rocco gave a totally gracious speech after he was eliminated. I had always thought he was a real jerk after seeing him on the reality show The Restaurant, but I have changed my mind about him. I like him more these days.

As for my two favorite dancers, it’s still 100% Lance Bass & Warren Sapp. I just love them both and hope they make it to the finals!!

And the team that I expect to go home next week is definitely Cloris & Corky. She’s been so much fun to watch, but this is about the time in the season when things get more serious. But I guess we’ll have to wait to see what happens.

The judges were downright mean to her. The worst was Bruno Tonioli. He told her that her dancing was:

…as cold and as distant as Siberia.

Now THAT’S harsh!

I am not surprised that she went home this week, I was surprised that Ted McGinley went home before her. But that’s no reason to be cruel. She was trying to learn very difficult ways to dance.

In my opinion, dancing should always be about having fun and should always be a positive experience. Not everyone has the same ability to learn the moves or to become great dancers, but to be mean about that is wrong.

Shame on the judges this week for being too critical. It didn’t have to get that bad.

Well, it’s happened. The night I hoped wouldn’t have to happen. It’s country music night on Dance War. Last week, listening to the final two girls on Bruno’s team sing together to determine who would stay and who would go nearly made my ears bleed. But now, it’s going to be country…..yikes!

Once again, we saw both teams dance to two different songs. The choreography was obviously not in the same ballpark as for a show such as So You Think You Can Dance, because none of the contestants on this show are the same caliber of dancers. It seems to me that this show really boils down to the ones who can learn a few simple dance moves to do while they sing. So the show seems to be misnamed. It’s really a singing competition.

For the second week in a row, team Carrie Ann won and Bruno had to send someone home. This week, he sent home Tony. In my opinion, the reason Carrie Ann’s team wins is because she chose better singers.

All I can say is that I’m thankful that country music week is over. Whew!

After writing my sour review of Dance War last week, I was concerned that I would upset a lot of my readers by being so critical. I actually held back a lot of my negativity about the show because of that, believe it or not.

But even though there haven’t been a ton of people voting in the poll, the ones that have voted seem very clear in their opinion that, at best, the show is mediocre. And if you look, you’ll see that the majority of the votes are from people who just don’t like the show.

{democracy:9}

Then, I went and checked out what my fellow b5media blogger, Gray Miller had to say. I instantly felt better. He wrote on his blog, Fame or Famine Performing Arts Blog, that:

The girls performance (why is it that all the girls had to perform together?) seemed to be a bunch of waving arms – again, not a lot of artistry here, just a lot of bump-grind-pump to go with the waving arms. I also found myself wondering how many of them had done this kind of dance in heels.

The process really seems tremendously padded to just enable more commercials. I really didn’t agree with Bruno’s evaluation of the vocal talents – especially the second group. I was amazed at how many wrong notes there were.

I have also looked around at the other reviewers on the ‘net and found that none of them like the show any better than I do. I know this show is very popular in Europe, but I just don’t think it’s going to make it here. And if it does, it’s just sad.

But, hey, I did promise to try to be positive, so I will hope that this week’s episode will be better. Or at least not totally suck.

But now, I have my TiVo season pass set to watch Girlicious and America’s Best Dance Crew. I just have a feeling that they will not disappoint. As a former “dancer” and a reality TV fanatic, I am so looking forward to quality dance shows again…

Bruno Tonioli & Carrie Ann Inaba have been on a promotional tour lately for their new dance reality show, Dance War. The latest interview they’ve done is with OK! Magazine. They sat down and discussed the show, each ohter and how they hope the season progresses. Here’s an excerpt of the interview:

What do you hope for in the coming weeks?
Carrie Ann: I hope for a lot of quality time with the kids in the studio because that’s where you start to find each other’s personalities and when you’re developing a team like this, it’s about learning how to work with each other and collaborate. I think the only way you can do that is in the studio. I really want these kids to start to feel comfortable with each other, like they can explore and push their boundaries in rehearsals.

Bruno: You see them do all these live numbers, different styles and, of course, the horrible elimination process, which is part of the game. There’s a lot of drama and a lot of entertainment and a lot of fights, I believe.

Carrie Ann, what do you think of Bruno?
I love Bruno. I think he’s one of the most colorful people I’ve ever met and I know he’s so creative and he’s very intelligent. We have very different ways of doing things so I think we’re fairly matched. But people say I’m at a disadvantage because he’s had more experience than me, but I’m not afraid!

Bruno, what do you think of Carrie Ann?
She’s a friend. We work very close together. You couldn’t wish for a better partner. It just clicked in from day one. Perfect casting. It’s unusual because Len [Goodman] and I did it before, we came here and usually when you put something new in the equation, you don’t know if it’s going to work and Carrie Ann was her own self from day one. That is great. It’s really teamwork and it just happened.

Ok, I’m going to try to stay positive about this show. Compared to the quality of dancing we see on shows like So You Think You Can Dance and even Dancing With the Stars after the first few weeks, the dancing on this show is often disappointing. It’s obvious that most of them are amateurs. Now, don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s great to get new dancers started, but the whole competition between teams thing still isn’t doing it for me. And about half of the singers (mostly the girls) hit sour notes fairly often and it just spoils the experience for me.

The show started with Drew Lachey telling us it was Pop Music Night. (Oh, please tell me that there won’t be a Country Music Night!!) Then the singers/dancers performed in several combinations and we were told to call in and vote for our favorite team. I like some of the members of each of the teams, but not all of either of them.

I really don’t know how they will do the elimination thing. So far, the show seems a bit chaotic to me. It seems like it can’t decide whether it’s an American Idol clone or a poor imitation of SYTYCD. Perhaps next week, it will all fall together for me. All of the young people seem so sincere and I like them as people, I just don’t enjoy the format of the show very much.

This was my two cents. I promise from here on this season, I’ll be less negative. But I would like to hear your opinion of this show format. Does it work for you? Do you like or dislike the show? And don’t hesitate to tell me that I’m all wrong, if that’s your opinion. I want to hear what you think, no matter which way you feel about the show. Please answer the poll question and/or leave a comment.
