We didn’t think it was possible to love Ryan Gosling any more, but he’s done it. “The patron saint of Canada” represented his birth country opposite MTV News’ Josh Horowitz, keeping a straight face as he discussed the Mickey Mouse Club and his flannel underwear. More »
Nyan Cat, which may have become our non-human mascot considering how much we write about it (him?), took advantage of the holiday weekend to fly through Montreal. It’s cool to see the Internet meme zipping over busy freeways and artists’ festivals in the greater Quebec area. It’s only too bad that the Canadians are moving too fast to appreciate Nyan Cat’s cuteness. More »
Go Canada! Neverending teen soap Degrassi: The Next Generation garnered an Emmy nomination this morning, for last season’s episode “My Body Is a Cage, Part 2″ starring Jordan Todosey as a transgender teen struggling with his gender identity. This iteration of Degrassi has been running for ten years, and the franchise has been around since 1979, so the attention is well-deserved. Curiously, the series is nominated within the category of Outstanding Children’s Program. More »
It’s Canada Day! We’d like to take this opportunity to pay homage to some of our favorite fictional Canucks, who make us laugh when they fart in each others’ faces and smile when they sing about the mall. More »
Even though there’s a whole new crop of stars on Degrassi: The Next Generation doesn’t mean that we don’t have a special place in our hearts for the original characters. Such is the case for Daniel Clark, who left the show in 2007: Fleshbot editor Lux Alptraum just tweeted, Saw Sean from Degrassi at the salon I get lasered at. That’s the kind of celeb sighting that excites me. Us too! More »
The season finale of Degrassi: In Too Deep certainly got itself mired pretty deep in the drama. “Drop the World, Part 2″ had Eli going pretty crazy when Clare tries to tell him that she needs space; Holly J acting incredibly awkward around Fiona know that she knows that Fi is in love with her; and K.C. handcuffed to Drew’s girlfriend Bianca on the night that Jenna is gonna give birth. Also, Anya’s judgmental face is fantastic. Read on for season finale drama! More »
You’ve got to hand it to the Degrassi writers; we know the new crop of characters well enough, and they (the writers) have set up enough juicy plotlines, that it’s exciting to watch it all come to a head. “Drop the World, Part 1″ had Holly J trying to break up with Sav, Fiona’s secret coming to the surface, Eli going crazy about his ex, Jenna and K.C. arguing about their impending parenthood, and Clare fearing for her life. The one quibble I have with “Chasing Pavements, Part 2″ is that Fiona’s realization that she’s gay seems more added on for the extra drama than when characters in prior seasons came out. Still, the conclusion was a really solid episode, and the subplots — Alli’s math crusade, the strange attraction between Anya and Owen — worked nicely. More »
I’ve gotta say, I wasn’t expecting Fiona’s deposition against Bobby, her boyfriend who physically abused her last season, to be so fascinating. Fiona’s always been a flaky, spoiled rich girl, yet in “Chasing Pavements, Part 1″ we see her as a recovering addict who manages to keep a tight grip on her strength even as Bobby tries to paint her as her former self. Spoiler: She wins! But not without several interesting plotlines being set up for next week… Like when she tries to make out with Holly J! More »
When Canadian rapper Eternia (born Silk-Anne Semiramis Dawn Craig Kaya) came on the scene in 2005, she made it clear that her songs wouldn’t shy away from women’s issues and traumas. But she also has a playful side, taking her stage name from the mythical planet that He-Man defends in the ’80s cartoon. Those attitudes come together in her music — four full-length offerings — and a cheeky T-shirt she designed, which reads, My Favorite Rapper Wears A Skirt. More »
Although Bravo exec and Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen recently said that the network wouldn’t be adding any new cities to The Real Housewives franchise, that may not have been truthful. The Hollywood Reporter says that Canadian production company Lark has partnered with Bravo to produce a Canadian edition of the show in Toronto. According to Lark, they are in the preliminary casting stage and the show has not yet been greenlit by Bravo. So if you’re a Great White North edition of Kim Zolciak or Kyle Richards, now’s your chance! More »
Actor Randy Quaid hasn’t been that relevant lately — his last big role was in 2005′s Brokeback Mountain — but then he went and revealed his “star whackers” conspiracy theory to the world. While pleading asylum in Canada, Quaid and wife Evi revealed that they feared for their lives, that secret Hollywood assassins called the star whackers had come to kill them. The whackers were allegedly responsible for the deaths of Heath Ledger and David Carradine and are trying to sabotage Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan. More »
Let’s start a slow clap for Holly J. Formerly the show’s annoying little gnat of a perfectionist, she’s grown into a wholly sympathetic character. And how did she get there? By self-sabotaging every step of the way. “Hide and Seek, Part 2″ concludes with Holly J playing her own doctor (with embarrassing results), and Alli deciding whether she should return home. More »
Now here’s the kind of excitement that Degrassi is best at: Two of its central female characters, Holly J and Alli, put themselves in danger this week but were too stubborn to make things right. Alli’s refusal to go home and either stay with ex-boyfriend Johnny at university or continue on to Toronto, plus Holly J’s propensity to push herself to her physical and emotional limits at her internship, provide the perfect lessons on how to add drama to your life. Canada appears to be going through some racial growing pains this week. First we found some footage of casting videos from Lake Shore, Canada’s attempt to remix MTV’s Jersey Shore. But instead of going the Guido route, the Canada Broadcasting Corporation found a Jew, a Pole and a Lebanese Gay. And now Maclean‘s magazine has a story called Too Asian?, about how the influx of Asian students at Canadian universities is making white students sad face.
Oh Canada. You’re picking up our worst stereotypes. And this is not a good look for you. More »
Today’s Controversy Of The Day was sparked by Lainey Gossip, a blogger we love, who is covering the celebrity scene at the Olympics.
Dear American celebrities in Vancouver,
We know you’re having fun at the Olympics and all, and the Vancouver gift suites are totally hooking you up, but news flash: You aren’t Canadian. Take off that admittedly slick-looking jacket, you traitor! Who cares if the Canadians are welcoming hosts, plying you with warm beverages and maple-flavored treats (this is what… More »
