The Canadian ‘Cash Cab’ Fatality Is One of the First Reality Show Accidents Involving an Innocent Bystander
When it comes to reality TV, it’s usually the contestants who report injuries, like when Michael Skupin fell into the fire on Survivor: The Australian Outback, or Dancing with the Stars contestants regularly blowing out ankles and other body parts. Barring a really gruesome accident, we figure that it’s part and parcel with signing up to live with strangers or compete for a cash prize. Rare is it that an innocent bystander becomes a victim due to whatever’s shooting in the area.

‘Degrassi’ Scores Its First-Ever Emmy Nomination
Go Canada! Neverending teen soap Degrassi: The Next Generation garnered an Emmy nomination this morning, for last season’s episode “My Body Is a Cage, Part 2″ starring Jordan Todosey as a transgender teen struggling with his gender identity. This iteration of Degrassi has been running for ten years, and the franchise has been around since 1979, so the attention is well-deserved. The one quibble I have with “Chasing Pavements, Part 2″ is that Fiona’s realization that she’s gay seems more added on for the extra drama than when characters in prior seasons came out. Still, the conclusion was a really solid episode, and the subplots — Alli’s math crusade, the strange attraction between Anya and Owen — worked nicely. More »

I’ve gotta say, I wasn’t expecting Fiona’s deposition against Bobby, her boyfriend who physically abused her last season, to be so fascinating. Fiona’s always been a flaky, spoiled rich girl, yet in “Chasing Pavements, Part 1″ we see her as a recovering addict who manages to keep a tight grip on her strength even as Bobby tries to paint her as her former self. Did Bravo Lie? Rumors Circulate About ‘The Real Housewives of Toronto’
Although Bravo exec and Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen recently said that the network wouldn’t be adding any new cities to The Real Housewives franchise, that may not have been truthful. The Hollywood Reporter says that Canadian production company Lark has partnered with Bravo to produce a Canadian edition of the show in Toronto. According to Lark, they are in the preliminary casting stage and the show has not yet been greenlit by Bravo. Randy Quaid to Premiere ‘Star Whackers’ Docu-Drama (with Nudity!) in Canada
Actor Randy Quaid hasn’t been that relevant lately — his last big role was in 2005′s Brokeback Mountain — but then he went and revealed his “star whackers” conspiracy theory to the world. While pleading asylum in Canada, Quaid and wife Evi revealed that they feared for their lives, that secret Hollywood assassins called the star whackers had come to kill them. The whackers were allegedly responsible for the deaths of Heath Ledger and David Carradine and are trying to sabotage Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan. More »

Too Asian? Canada Gets Racial Stereotypes Wrong. Again.
Canada appears to be going through some racial growing pains this week. First we found some footage of casting videos from Lake Shore, Canada’s attempt to remix MTV’s Jersey Shore. But instead of going the Guido route, the Canada Broadcasting Corporation found a Jew, a Pole and a Lebanese Gay. And now Maclean‘s magazine has a story called Too Asian?, about how the influx of Asian students at Canadian universities is making white students sad face.

Hilary Duff to host Charity Dinner in Toronto
Hilary Duff will be flying to Toronto, Ontario this Friday to host a special charity dinner. ‘An Intimate Charity Dinner with Hilary Duff’ will be held at Toronto’s Ultra Supper Club. Proceeds from the event, which includes a silent auction, will support Hilary’s charity, Blessings in a Backpack.
