Bono Uses The Glitz And Glamor Of The Toronto Film Festival To Promote Humanitarianism

The Toronto International Film Festival was saturated with all the glitz and glamor we’ve come to expect from A-list events: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie swooped in to promote Brad’s new flick Moneyball and George Clooney stepped out with his new girlfriend, former wrestler Stacy Kiebler. But away from the red carpet, U2 frontman Bono was using the festival’s publicity machine to raise awareness for the humanitarian crisis currently affecting Somalia. Over the past months, an extreme drought and famine has ravaged the Horn of Africa. A legitimate crisis, the famine has affected more than 12.3 million African citizens. Things are particularly devastating in Somalia, where the nation’s problems with terrorism and government dysfunction are preventing aid from reaching the people who need it. Despite the fact that this has been going on for months, news of the crisis is just now popping up on Western radars — thanks in part to the tireless efforts of Bono. Still not content with the degree to which the crisis has been publicized, Bono and Somalian singer K’naan sat down in Toronto for a round table discussion with members of the press. In addition to relaying facts and figures about the famine, Bono also commented on his unique position as a cause-ambassador who can actually command the attention of the entertainment media:

“Celebrity is one of the most ridiculous modern concepts. It takes people who are spoiled, over-regarded and over-rewarded, and it makes heroes of us. It ignores firemen, mothers and nurses – people who are actually heroes. I know it’s ridiculous, but it is currency, and I want to spend mine well.”

Considering how many celebrities use their fame and fortune to get themselves free stuff and attractive dates, it’s nice to hear from a celebrity who is actually interested in getting something accomplished. And considering how much progress Bono has made with the organizations he’s involved with, he’s definitely spending his currency well. The fact that he’s a celebrity willing to call himself spoiled,over-rewarded and over-regarded doesn’t lose him points with us either. Even if those words don’t actually apply to him. (photo via)

Madonna’s Upper East Side Neighbor Is Suing Her For Being Too Noisy

Well, this is embarrassing. Madonna‘s downstairs neighbor at one of her New York City properties is suing her for making too much noise over the course of three years. Apparently, she was using her apartment as a rehearsal and workout studio, playing loud music and stomping around with her “guests” from one to three hours a day, every day. Manhattan judge Louis York has allowed the lawsuit to proceed.

Via The New York Post:

“Plaintiff alleges that noise and vibrations were the product of amplified music, which Madonna and her guests used to conduct dance training and exercise routines. Plaintiff states that these disturbances forced her to leave her apartment on numerous occasions and greatly interefered with the entertainment of guests,” Justice Louis York wrote.

She said she repeatedly complained to Madonna and the building about the problem beginning in June of 2008, but they took no action for almost a year. Madonna finally did have some work done to buffer the noise, but it was unsuccessful, George’s filings say.

Madonna’s defense countered by saying that the noise only happened during the day, never exceeded three hours, and never reached the level prohibited by city codes. In other words, Madonna is going to do as she darn well likes, because she is fucking Madonna.

As someone who works from home, I can sympathize with the neighbor here. If someone was making a ton of noise for three hours every afternoon (which is nearly half my work day), I’d be pissed too. It wouldn’t matter if it was Joe Schmoe or my favorite band in the world; constant, blaring noise renders your apartment uninhabitable. (I can’t read or write anything longer than a tweet when there’s music on.) Compound that by the fact that whoever lives in Madonna’s building paid a fuck ton of money for the privilege, and they are really going to want it to be habitable. I mean, it’s not like Madonna’s act is some low budget, fly-by-night operation…she can afford an actual practice/exercise studio.

On the other hand, it seems like the neighbor has already won this battle and is now just being vindictive. According to the article, Madge has since “constructed a studio in one of her other New York City properties to use for her exercises,” so the torment is over. But that’s not going to stop the neighbor from putting some insane price tag on all the mental anguish Madonna has inflicted, which she will pay, because she has infinite dollars.

So, what have we learned today? Non-famous rich people: 1.) hate noise, 2.) even if it’s Madonna, and 3.) are way greedy. How do you think they got rich in the first place?

French Wax Museum Honors Hollywood With An Approximation Of George Clooney And Brad Pitt

The Musee Grevin in Paris unveiled its newest homage to Hollywood this past Tuesday with wax sculptures of actor/producer Brad Pitt standing next to a likeness of George Clooney (which is apparently quite popular with the ladies according to the Grevin’s website). Pitt sports a tasteful summer ensemble, longish hair and a graying goatee.

But the Inglourious Basterds star looks barely like himself, maybe because we still don’t associated Pitt with being over 40. Or, even more likely, it was because he didn’t have time to model for the statue. That’s right! The museum’s artisans had to use photos to approximate the actor’s visage. Maybe the research interns accidentally slipped a pic of young Nick Nolte in there?

In any case, this also explains why Clooney looks so strange as well. According to www.grevin.com:

“…although George Clooney expressed pleasure at becoming one of the Grévin’s famous figures, he was too busy to come to Paris or to find the time to pose for the Grévin workshops…Getting the volumes exactly right using just photographs and videos is a very difficult exercise — but the Grévin team met the challenge valiantly and the wax statue is amazingly lifelike.”

Lifelike is one way of putting it. Looking exactly like his Team America: World Police puppet is another.

She screamed back. We’d been at it for weeks.

“Ohhh yeah, I just can’t keep my hands off your Teen Choice Awards, Leighton!” I said, “Excuse me, I mean, award. Tell me again what it was like losing out to Blake Lively in 2008?!”

She never answered back. The next day, I found this DVD under the door to my room.

The truth was, I had been touching Leighton’s shit for weeks now. But it was too late to say anything.

The Many Terrible Faces Of Sammi From ‘Jersey Shore’

Was the title of last night’s Jersey Shore ironic? As the second episode of the 3rd season, “It’s Going To Be An Interesting Summer” could have been an appropriate name if anything, literally anything had happened on the episode. Instead, we had another full hour dedicated to Sammi‘s spiral into clinical depression, which included a 10-minute dinner scene where she and Ronnie had so little to say to each other that the producers were forced to give the waitress lines. Seriously. “Would you guys like anything else?” and “Can I take your order?” were actual pieces of dialogue. So was “I will have the grilled chicken sandwich with broccoli rabe.”

Meanwhile, the rest of the cast has Sunday dinner and wonder what Sammi and Ronnie could possibly be doing. To make a perfect analogy, this would be like having a Passover Seder where you spent the entire time talking about Elijah. Don’t worry guys! Sammi and Ronnie are just staring at their sandwiches, not talking to each other! Even with your limited imaginations, you guys have seen Sammi and Ronnie at meals before, you don’t need to rack your brains to figure out how painful and awkward their relationship is. Enjoy yourselves! Because they aren’t!

And lets talk about those two for a moment (because we have to). Even though last night was really the lowest this show has ever sunk in terms of entertainment value, you can’t help but have a post-game discussion about Ronnie and Sammi’s horrible relationship. Because we all know a Sammi and Ronnie: the two friends that are miserable with each other, and not content to be miserable with each other alone. Instead they’re a constant presence in your lives, dragging down every occasion with their silent fuming and evil eyes, only to cut every outing short so they can go home and explode at each other. Jesus Christ, these two.

Anyway, Sammi is the worst, no doubt about it, but you also feel bad for her because the girl clearly needs some Lexapro. Just look at this GIF of all her angry, terrible faces!

Sammi, we hate you, and you’re a drag on this entire program. You’re not even interesting-awful, like Angelina. Either leave the program and get some help, or fucking suck it up, girl. Because one more episode like this and we’re going to have to call it quits on this whole show.

I’m Just Not That Into You, Natalie Portman

I’m sorry, Natalie Portman. I know that as an actress, you’ve made a lot of great career decisions. From your early days in The Professional and Beautiful Girls to your recent critically-acclaimed Black Swan, no one is doubting your versatile acting skills. But I still do not like you.

Maybe it’s because we’re so similar: we are both beloved by Jewish men who appreciate our”Jewess-with-shiksa-appeal;” we both rocked the shaved head look for awhile (and pulled it off because of our fine bone structures); and we are both pretty much banned from Israel for life.

But I think it goes deeper than that. I think you are smug, Natalie Portman. I think you are the female version of Christian Bale, with your extreme and unhealthy body fluxuations for different roles. I do not like how you signed that Hollywood list that essentially said Roman Polanski should get out of jail for free. I do not like your pseudo-politics, or your poise, or what you did to the Star Wars legacy.

But mostly, Natalie Portman, I do not like how ubiquitous you are. It’s like every time I close my eyes and think of the word “actress,” either you or Meryl Streep pop into my head. I am happy you’ve become so successful, because you do seem very smart, and can make fun of yourself (like in that Saturday Night Live video where you rap about your Ivy league education.)

But lately you’ve seemed to be losing your sure-footing, Natalie, taking your Black Swan choreographer away from his girlfriend and calling him your own, and obsessing over your love of self-flagellation in interviews. Maybe now the world will see you the way I do: as a smug, creepy bitch. Sorry, I just don’t like you.

P.S. Garden State still continues to suck.

In 5 days, 26-year-old Garrett Hedlund will be up on a billion screens across America, clad in a skin-type CGI suit and dropped into a weird 3D wonderland full of beauty and danger. Tron: Legacy may as well be called “This year’s Avatar” for all the hype surrounding the special effects and ginormous budget that the film boasts, yet we haven’t really heard much about the Aussie actor Sam Worthington once he shed his Pandora layers.

So while we can’t put our money yet on Garrett becoming an A-list superstar, we do know a sexy body when we see one. Go ahead and ogle girls: he may not be around this time next year.
