The Wizard of Oz is being re-released on DVD today (Tuesday, September 29) in honor of its 70th anniversary and to celebrate they are having a screening in Central Park with lots of special musical guests: ?uestlove (of The Roots), Jennifer Hudson, Julianne Hough, Bilal, “and a band assembled especially for the show” will be performing contemporary interpretations of classic songs from the film. The Pavement Reunion shows have grown: there are now four scheduled for 2010 in Central Park. Strangely, the first (September 21, 2010) is listed as being at Summerstage, while the rest are at Rumsey Playfield. The three other dates are September 22, 23, and 24 all in 2010. It’s really not a rumor this time. Amid all the buzz about Pavement’s reunion, they have officially confirmed the September 21, 2010 date AND tickets go on presale TOMORROW. I don’t think I’ve ever bought tickets for something a year in advance, but I am sure as hell about to.

New York Philharmonic rehearsing in North Korea in 2008
Sorry to be late on this, but The New York Philharmonic is playing their free summer shows this week and next. On Tuesday night they played at Central Park and last night I caught them in Prospect Park, which, as usual, was great fun. The rest of the schedule is:

Spanish songstress Juana Molina played a free show at Central Park’s Summerstage last night. The weather was perfect and she was great, playing songs from her many albums.If you missed her, she just announced a show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on August 20 (tickets go on sale Friday at noon). Summerstage’s final show was yesterday, Sunday August 17 and it was a doozie. Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens played first, followed by the Menahan Street Band, and finally by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. Sharon Jones, who is only 4’11″, has the most spectacular stage presence, and an incredible voice to go with it. Israeli songstress Yael Naim played at Summerstage in Central Park on Sunday night. It was a beautiful evening, the rain finally clearing up and the temperature finally cooling down. Naim has songs in Hebrew, French, and English, including a cover of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” and the song “New Soul,” which is on the MacBook Air commercial.
