This episode should have been retitled "Dan and Blair Sit Around in an Airport and then a Hotel While Other People Wonder Where They Are," but at least Blair stood up for herself and we now know the truth about Gossip Girl and the real Charlie Rhodes. More »
Post from: Crushable

This episode could be reduced to a few simple questions like, “Where’s Blair?” Or, “Have you seen Blair?” Or, “If you don’t tell me where Blair is, I’ll do something terrible to you.” Other than that, nothing happened. Nothing. When the reruns air, I’d change this episode’s title to: “Dan and Blair Sit Around in an Airport and then a Hotel While Other People Wonder Where They Are.” See, you read that and you don’t even need to watch. I just saved America 42 minutes. I hope that time’s used well. With that in mind, here’s this week’s power ranking for 5×14:

Character

Rank

Last Week

Trending

Comments

Anonymous Airport Hotel Room

1

N/A

The real player this week was Blair and Dan’s hotel hideout. Other than Bair’s wedding, this was the place to be seen in NYC if you’re rich, famous, and young.

Blair Waldorf

2

6

You might think resigning herself to a year in a gilded cage would be enough to drop Blair into last place on the power ranking, but here, character counts. Blair took the bullet for her family so they wouldn’t be saddled with a crippling dowry (read: ridiculous plot device), and declared her independence for the first time by telling Chuck they could only be together as equals.

Dan Humphrey

3

2

Dan killed himself for Blair this week, and I can’t figure out why. Does he love her? The final shot of him staring at Blair’s departing limo with a serial killer’s intensity suggests he’s up to no good. Whatever happens to him, I hope it ends in a long prison sentence.

The Real Charlotte Rhodes

4

N/A

So the commoner Nate was hitting on last week was actually the real Charlotte Rhodes. She’s back this week and she came to play, turning down Nate Archibald’s romantic overtures. I’m not sure this girl knows what she’s getting into.

Nate Archibald

5

7

Nate failed to impress for the second week in a row. He eavesdrops on a single phone conversation and decides the new girl is a worthless liar, and then changes his mind after a call from one of his friend’s mothers. Nate wants so badly to be his own man, but I guess he can only do that when Lily tells him it’s okay.

Serena van der Wooden

6

4

Serena had another tough week. Dan lied to her about Blair, she took the fall for the uploaded video, and was rejected by Dan. Someone needs to remind this girl she can have any man she wants. Presidents! Poets! Nobel Laureates! Me! Instead, she wants certified hack Dan Humphrey. It’s enough to make a man ill.

Sophie Grimaldi

7

This woman is evil. EVIL. She blackmailed Blair’s mother with a dowry, which may be the first time that’s happened since the Middle Ages. Who knows what she’s capable of? (Side note: The Principality of Monaco must be thrilled to have their royals portrayed as amoral lunatics. It’s like The Tudors, but with less plague.)

Chuck Bass

8

If Chuck were one of my buddies, I’d take him out for a few beers (I’d make him pay, of course), and let him vent. If he keeps holding in all his pain, he’ll snap, and destabilize the European economy in a fit of jealous rage. My 401(k) just can’t take that.

GeorginaSparks

9

I knew there was no way Georgina was Gossip Girl. They didn’t fool me one bit (they totally fooled me). When the real Gossip Girl returns, I’m sure she’ll unleash a campaign of personal destruction against Georgina that would make Mitt Romney blush.

We’ve made some changes to our Gossip Girl recaps: Joshua Friesen will still be asking why there are so many parties and ragging on Penn Badgley in the way that made his “30 Year-Old-Man’s Guide to Gossip Girl” posts so funny. But now he’s adding in sports-inspired power rankings to keep you abreast of all the social intrigue on the show.

I love sports. I guess that’s no big surprise; I am a man in his (early) thirties, after all. Inspired by that love, I’ve adapted a common sports writing tool that allows me to bring a bit of quantitative analysis to the teen drama game: The power ranking. If you’re not familiar with the concept of a power ranking, it’s generally used to rank sports teams or athletes, how their performance rises and falls over time, and the reasons for any change.

Each week I’ll rank all the major characters and any minor characters that played an important role in the episode. With that out of the way, here’s the very first Gossip Girl Power Ranking:

Character

Rank

Last Week

Trending

Comments

Nate Archibald

1

-

Normally, learning a family member plotted to kill you would push a guy into a downward spiral. Nate, on the other hand, seems enlivened. He set his grandfather straight and is engineering a buyout of The Spectator. Congratulations, Nate. You’re number one!

Blair Waldorf

2

-

I like drunk Blair. She’s so much more fun that dour Blair, or scheming Blair. This week, she cut loose, got locked up, and still came out smelling fresh. In my book, that’s good enough for spot number two. But watch the bulimia jokes, sister. If you keep that up, the only thing falling faster than your rank, will be Seal’s will to live.

Gossip Girl

3

-

I’m not sure what’s going on with Gossip Girl right now. In return for spiking Serena’s first column, she feeds Nate damning information on his cousin. But in Nate and Serena’s plot to ensnare Tripp, the column goes up anyway. Was Gossip Girl in on that? Was she double-crossed? The answer will be crucial in determining future rankings.

Chuck Bass

4

-

Bad Chuck is back, or at least he seems to be. I’ve been hoping for this all season, but now that it’s here, I’m conflicted. If he succeeds in breaking up Blair’s wedding, that may be his own Rubicon. I wish he’d use his evil powers for good, like ruining Dan. In summary: trend – undetermined, rank – unimpressive.

Serena van der Woodsen

5

-

What are you doing, Serena? You were on a roll. Your first column was a hit in the nation’s biggest city, you helped your friend Nate ruin a man you hate, and you looked great in all those short skirts. But now you’re lying to Dan so you can continue to fake date him? You don’t need to stoop to that level. You’re a seven-foot tall blonde, for god’s sake. Just seduce him and get it over with.

Kati Grimaldi

6

-

Kati’s arrow was going up for the first 59 minutes of this episode. She had finally turned a corner and accepted Blair, even saving her from embarrassment in the press. But when you get exiled to Africa, it’s an undeniable downward trend. I guess that’s what you get for trusting such an impossibly square-jawed priest. (Yeah, I noticed. What of it?)

Dan Humphrey

7

-

I may have misheard (I hope I misheard), but did Dan really say he wanted to write a “modern western”? He’s gone too far this time. I loathe you, Dan Humphrey. I wish you ill. If you keep this garbage up, you’ll be on the bottom of this list forever.

Judging by the preview, it looks like next week is D-Day for Blair and Louis. Maybe we’ll see The Graduate all over again: Chuck banging on the church window, he and Blair making their escape on a passing bus, sitting in silence together as the full weight of their decision comes crashing down… Probably not. Knowing this show, they’ll just drag the wedding out over the next seven episodes. I guess we’ll see.

Here's the first trailer for What to Expect When You're Expecting--we figure that with actually funny actors like Wendi McLendon-Covey and hot actors like Joe Manganiello, at least half of the plotlines will be worthwhile. More »
Post from: Crushable

If you’re not already in ensemble-comedy overload with New Year’s Eve, here’s the next movie jammed with tons of familiar faces and based on a nonfiction book: What to Expect When You’re Expecting, about a bevy of couples dealing with pregnancy and the terror of birth.

You don’t get too much information about each plotline since they’re trying to cram in every star — is that you, Joe Manganiello? — but we were able to get the bare bones of it. Elizabeth Banks seems to be the star, as the owner of a successful baby-apparel store who has the shittiest pregnancy imaginable. It doesn’t help that there are characters like Brooklyn Decker, who seems to look even more beautiful during.

Having a more normal pregnancy is fitness guru Cameron Diaz, and Anna Kendrick as a girl who gets pregnant unexpectedly by her one-night stand (Chace Crawford). Then you have Jennifer Lopez and her husband, who are looking to adopt a baby from Africa. The few seconds we saw of J.Lo have us thinking she might be an overly broad stereotype of a crazy infertile mother.

Did I forget anyone? Judge for yourself.

You might also recognize Bridesmaids scene-stealers Rebel Wilson (as Annie’s gross roommate), Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Ben Falcone (Melissa McCarthy‘s husband, aka Air Marshall Jon). Although I’m a little wary since this is based on a guide book for expecting mothers, I think that there’s enough variety — and actual funny actors — that at least half of the plotlines will be fun.

Before we start with this week’s review, I’d like to take a moment to applaud the renegade visionary who titles these episodes. I know it’s probably a team effort, but I prefer to imagine a single crazed genius locked in the dark confines of some Hollywood back lot, sitting at a bare desk in an empty room, surrounded by scraps of paper filled with his abandoned ideas. He’s focused, eyes screwed shut, sweat gathering at his brow, thick glasses fogged with the escaping heat from his overtaxed brain. Finally, with his deadline looming, he captures that elusive muse, that inspiration, and he cries out, “Eureka!”

His titles thus far: Yes, Then Zero, Beauty and the Feast, The Jewel of Denial, and Memoirs of an Invisible Dan. Each title a delicious pun, each title encapsulating an entire episode in less than five words. In homage to you, mysterious sir, I’ve created my own alternative title to this week’s episode. I’ll call it, Bonfire of the Danitites. Awesome, right? Right? I hate myself…

After careening at breakneck speed for the last month, events slow in week four and focus on Dan as he attempts to come to terms with his newfound literary acclaim and the collateral damage it creates in his social circle. This was a sad episode in many ways. The characters seem to be drifting away from each other as they grow in their new lives and that was highlighted this week as each character experienced loneliness and solitude in different ways. I promise that’s as serious as these recaps will ever get. Now let’s get snarky!

• Tate Donovan directed this week’s episode! For those who don’t know, he played Marissa Cooper’s hapless father on The OC. I always had a soft spot for that guy. He might be the biggest loser in the history of television.

• I don’t know if I can handle all this genius talk surrounding Dan and his novel. By the end of the episode his book is number four on Amazon’s pre-order list, and he’s being hailed as the voice of his generation by the New York press. If that’s the case, his generation’s voice is going to be oddly deep for its body type.

• Gossip Girl pulled a Law and Order with a phone hacking plotline ripped from the headlines. What’s next? Will the gang stage a sympathy protest for the kids down on Wall Street and #occupybergdorfs?

• I don’t know what kind of accent Louis has, but it isn’t French. It sounds like he’s speaking through a mouth full of marshmallows.

• How far along is Blair, anyway? They revealed her positive pregnancy test at the end of season four, and a summer passed before season five picked up. Simple math says that Blair is at least three months along, maybe as many as four. So unless she’s pulling a Beyonce and faking her pregnancy, she should be showing by now. Hold on… IS BLAIR FAKING HER PREGNANCY?

• Am I really expected to believe Daniel Day-Lewis would pass on a movie because a fictionalized version of Serena drank too much and slept around in some book? The Daniel Day-Lewis I envision reads only The Master and Margarita in its original Russian and cares not for the dealings of petty little girls.

• In case you’re wondering, Sloane Crosby is a real writer and so is her book I Was Told There’d be Cake (I had to Google this). Sorry CBS/Warner Brothers, despite your best efforts at subtle product placement, I will not be reading Ms. Crosby’s book. I will be eating cake, however. So, well done there.

• Louis continues to show up at precisely the right moment to hear key pieces of information meant to be secret, and he always manages to explain why he’s someplace he isn’t supposed to be. This show is thorough.

• Elizabeth Hurley hires Charlie/Ivy to work at her gossip rag. This will play out in one of two ways: Hurley will blackmail Charlie/Ivy into spying on her friends and gathering dirt for publication, or Hurley is jealous of Charlie/Ivy’s growing relationship with Nate and she’s setting her up for a fall. Either way, I hope Charlie/Ivy will be exposed and ruined. Max, I’ve got your back, brother.

• Rufus eviscerates Dan at the end of this episode. He’s always been portrayed as a loving father, but no loving father would say those terrible things to his own son, especially in the moment of his greatest triumph. Character assassination in the name of plot is the most heinous crime of the hack writer. I should know; I recognize my own kind.

• Serena’s charged with obtaining the movie right to Dan’s novel, which is another not-so-subtle attempt to liken Dan to F. Scott Fitzgerald. Remember at the start of the season, they were producing a film version of Fitzgerald’s novel The Beautiful and the Damned. Maybe David O. Russell will be attached to direct Inside.

Well, that wraps the major events of week four. Two predictions for week five: after alienating his friends and family, Dan turns to the arms of his agent, Alessandra Steele (by the way, only porn stars have the last name Steele. It’s a documented fact), and Elizabeth Hurley reveals herself to be Shiva the destroyer god of Hindu theology. I’d lay odds on the first prediction.

CHUCK KEPT THE DOG!! Sorry, I probably shouldn’t lead with the emotional climax of this week’s episode, but it’s possible this moment changes Gossip Girl forever. More on that later.

The pot keeps bubbling in episode five. Dan decides to take credit for the embarrassing novel he’s been trying to kill, Blair reveals Louis to be her child’s father, Charlie finds a way to stay in the city, and Elizabeth Hurley may be the greatest threat to Gossip Girl since net neutrality. Now for the details:

• How did Blair get those paternity results anyway? Don’t you need blood samples for that kind of thing? I didn’t see Chuck or Louis filling vials down at the clinic. I think the writers missed a huge opportunity here. Blair’s just the kind of girl who could engineer a scheme to get the necessary blood samples on the DL, which could have been the foundation for the greatest episode in this show’s history. Come on guys, I’m here to help. All you have to do is ask.

• What is going on with Nate? I know he’s anxious to prove himself apart from his family, but Elizabeth Hurley is obviously crazy. And his feeling suddenly indignant about being used for sex rings hollow after he watched her fire a room full of reporters just so they could screw. Bro to bro, Nate: this girl is trouble.

• I love that Dorota’s text messages are written in broken English, but it’s odd that she has Dan’s cell number, right?

• Once again, Dan’s writing is referred to as “brilliant,” which guarantees we’ll never actually hear what he’s written. There’s no way the writers can fashion something actually brilliant for a character they’ve sold as being brilliant. So we’ll just have to take their word on that one. I remain skeptical.

• Charlie keeps jerking Max around and he keeps taking it!! She has to be stopped. Maybe she could fall from the Empire State Building, or get hit by a taxi crossing the street, or eaten by sewer rats. Easy Josh…Breathe… You’re projecting…

• I won’t lie. I don’t know much about fashion, especially women’s fashion, so I had to Google Jenny Packham. You may be interested to know (possibly uninterested to know) that she’s a British fashion designer known primarily for her bridal gowns and ready to wear collection. She’s also the brother of naturalist Chris Packham, who’s work I’m sure you’re all familiar with, so I won’t bother explaining.

• Charlie delivered the best line of the episode and it was a complete throwaway. As she was blackmailing her mother she described New York by saying, “everything here sparkles,” which could replace “ILOVENY” as the official state tourism slogan. It could also be the new tagline for Dawn dish soap.

• I’m learning a lot about makeup watching this show. That’s probably an indication I’m not their target demographic.

• Is the motorcycle in Chuck’s hotel room purely decorative?

• It’s seems clear that Blair lied, and Chuck fathered her baby. Why else would the camera linger as she put the paternity results in her dresser drawer? Blair can’t hide this forever. Once that baby starts talking and has trouble suppressing its English accent, the cat will be out of the bag.

• The revelation that Blair is pregnant with Louis’ child finally drives Chuck to feel again, and I didn’t enjoy watching him weep in bed, cradling his new dog. It’s appropriate he had the dog neutered in this episode though, because that’s exactly what Chuck has become. I want the old Chuck back. Preferably next week.

In all seriousness, I’m interested in how they’ll resolve Blair’s pregnancy. This genre’s infant mortality rate is abysmal. Most pregnancies end in miscarriage, a few end in abortion. It’s the way this world works, because it’s hard to be frivolous when helpless babies are around. Once in a great while pregnancies can be transformative, especially when you’re trying to usher your characters into adulthood. I wonder if that’s the case here? Now that Blair’s seen Chuck’s softer side as he cares for his new dog, will she reveal the truth? Will this baby finally bring Blair and Chuck together and reveal how unimportant and crass their concerns really are? I sure hope not.

I have no evidence to prove the theory I put forth in my headline — the theory that Chace Crawford probably smells good — and I don’t know that he’s actually wearing the CK fragrance of the hour. All I know is that Chace Crawford seems like a guy who probably smells terrific. Like, clean and stuff.

Joshua Friesen is a man in his 30s who's obsessed with pop culture. This is how his brain processes Gossip Girl.

DAVID O. RUSSELL? Are you kidding me, Gossip Girl? Not six months ago, he was in a tux at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel hoping to collect an Oscar for directing “The Fighter.” Now he has a cameo on a CW soap opera? The only possible explanation here is blackmail. Remember, George Clooney once punched this guy in the jaw. O. Russell’s all over You Tube screaming at poor Lily Tomlin. By all accounts he’s a miserable human being. The producers must have something so terrible on him, something so heinous that he’s at their beck and call. Or he’s stopped taking himself so seriously and he’s just having a good time.

It could go either way.

Anyway, here’s where we stand at the opening of season five: Dan discovers his novel is about to be published against his will, and if that happens, Blair’s engagement to the Prince of Monaco could be threatened. Serena’s a fast-rising PA working in Hollywood. Nate’s hooking up with an older woman who may have sinister intentions, and who may have once been Elizabeth Hurley. Chuck is busy pretending not to be shattered by the impending nuptials, and Blair may be pregnant by someone other than the prince. We’re off to a fast start.

A quick side note here: How long do we really expect Blake Lively to hang around? She’s a style icon with a budding film career. She doesn’t need this show. And when was the last time there was such a disparity in the career mobility of one cast member versus the others? Penn Badgley peaked when he dated Lively, Taylor Momsen’s best-case scenario is a long rehab stint in her 30’s, and Ed Westwick’s British. Lively has star potential and she must know it. Once she’s gone, who’s going to watch a show about Chuck, Dan, Nate, and Blair? Nobody, that’s who. Now a few observations about episode one:

• It was a nice touch to feature F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Beautiful and the Damned in this episode. After all, Fitzgerald was famous for chronicling the lives of the idle rich, and Gossip Girl is a show about the idle rich. Congratulations writers, you’ve convinced me you attended college. And did anyone else notice that the book Dan is desperately trying to keep under wraps happens to be a chronicle of the idle rich? Could they actually be implying that Dan Humphrey is the next F. Scott Fitzgerald?

• Blair is marrying the Prince of Monaco, which would make her the next Princess of Monaco, a title once held by Grace Kelly who was one of the most beautiful and elegant women in history. That’s a stretch even by this show’s standards.

• Are they trying to turn Chuck Bass into some kind of superhero? He jumps off buildings, races motorcycles up Laurel Canyon, and charms any women he wants. How long until this guy starts solving crimes? Actually, that might be a great spin-off once Blake leaves the show.

• And how about Chuck revealing his injury from the motorcycle crash, the one he’s been hiding from all his friends? That metaphor’s thinner than Chase Crawford’s resume.

• One more thing about Chuck: What’s with all the cravats? I know fashion is a big thing with this show, but if I wore a cravat in public, I’d get punched in the throat.

• Was that Jenny Lewis I saw at the Hollywood party? Between Lewis and O. Russell, this show’s in danger of turning into Entourage. Will Jeremy Piven’s hairpiece be next to cameo?

• If I see JLo and her stupid Fiat commercial one more time, I’m going to buy a Chevy Suburban.

Well that was episode one. God only knows what’s in store this season. Apparently the ratings have been dwindling, so that usually translates into outrageous storylines and stunt casting. I’m pretty excited. No matter what happens, I’ll be here to walk you through it. See you next week.

Catching Fire, the second film in the Hunger Games trilogy, won’t hit theaters until Thanksgiving 2013, but it’s never too soon to start casting the sequel’s hottie, District 4 victor Finnick Odair. That means we’re looking for an actor who’s got great abs, bronze hair (or the coloring to support it), and can play an asshole who knows how to wield a trident.

We don’t want to ruin how he ends up in the movie, but here’s the rundown: Finnick won the Hunger Games when he was 14, so in Catching Fire he’s in his twenties, something of a celebrity. Because his district’s industry is fishing, he’s tanned and a great swimmer, and knows his way around a trident. He’s the Capitol’s darling, which makes Katniss wary of trusting him; she doesn’t know if his loyalties lie with President Snow.

Twitter is abuzz with #FinnickWatch2013, but here are Crushable’s top choices. Physical resemblance aside, the actors we’re considering have that poise and arrogance that is what best characterizes Finnick for us.

Alex Pettyfer: Alex seems to be a frontrunner, especially considering his real-life bad boy image. And as we pointed out in our Crushable 25 profile, the best thing he can do right now to revamp his image is to star in a hit movie. It may not be a romantic comedy, as the publicist suggested, but there’s no denying he’d get a lot of press.

Armie Hammer: Today seems to be the first time that Armie’s name has been associated with Finnick, but he’s a really good fit, no? We’re all agreed that he’s dreamy (thanks to seeing two of him in The Social Network), and the fact that he’s the heir to Arm & Hammer means he knows what it means to be part of a lineage. Be the first to join the “Armie Hammer for Finnick” Facebook page!

Ben Barnes: The coloring’s off, though that wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for Hunger Games casting. After seeing him play Prince Caspian in the Chronicles of Narnia movies, we know he could play an entitled kid with an affinity for water.

Chace Crawford: Finnick is quite the pretty boy…

With each role, they run these characters into the ground until they’re the most bare-bones stereotypes.

It becomes shorthand: Sarah Jessica Parker is a highstrung, Type A businesswoman. Sandra Bullock is tough-as-nails and uses a breezy attitude to hide her secret insecurities. Penelope Cruz played the same role in both the Spanish and American Vanilla Sky movies, with the second an awful remake of what had been a fantastic performance the first time around.

Emma Roberts‘ good-girl muse Sally in The Art of Getting By could have been just a worse rehashing of her radiant character in Twelve, but the combination of director Gavin Wiesen‘s script and Roberts’ own know-how elevates Sally to a better version of what we’ve seen before.

Twelve isn’t Roberts’ fault: The movie is the deliriously bad tale of good-guy-turned-drug-dealer White Mike (Chace Crawford), who caters to his former classmates’ partygoing needs while maintaining a shaky alliance with fellow dealer Lionel (50 Cent).

Roberts plays Molly — even the names sound similar! — White Mike’s childhood friend. Even though she tries to keep in touch with him after his mother’s death, he gradually alienates her because he wants to keep her safe from his immoral life. Of course, by events out of White Mike’s control, Molly ends up getting invited to the big party he’s “catering,” and is disgusted by his status as a drug dealer, but moreso by the fact that he didn’t think enough of her to tell her the truth. Roberts is stuck within the confines of a sketchy character, and isn’t at all memorable.
