Chris Brown’s Rep Says He And Rihanna Are Not Together

In the past month, there’s been some disturbing evidence to suggest that Rihanna is considering getting back together with her abusive ex Chris Brown—namely, tweets supposedly posted for their followers but so lovey-dovey that they have to be directed at each other. Right? We sincerely hope not, because Rihanna taking Chris back would a) likely put her in danger of getting smacked around again, and b) sends a bad message to her fans to not stand up for yourself.

That’s why we’re glad for this news from Chris’ rep, via TMZ: Chris and Rihanna are just friends (gag for the overused phrase, extra gag since we can’t imagine being friends with your abuser) and are not looking to get back together. Fans were sure that a reunion was in the works when Chris and RiRi were spotted at the same West Hollywood nightclub last night; their followers ignored the fact that they left separately.

However, the rep points out, Chris arrived and left with his actual girlfriend Karrueche Tran. (We’re guessing that Karrueche’s tattoo “The past is practice” is part of why she’s forgiving of Chris’ abusive ways.) It might be that the attraction still exists, albeit as a one-sided thing: Media Take Out claims that Karrueche got all up in Rihanna’s grill at the club because Rihanna’s been telling people that she does still want to get back together with Chris. Rihanna’s also allegedly pissed because Karrueche and her friends made a video mocking RiRi’s accent:

However, this is probably another case of creating drama where there is none. Commenters point out that Karrueche and her friends spend the first half of the video quoting lines from an Anjelah Johnson skit about nail salons. It isn’t until halfway through that she asks, “What song is this?” and her friend says that it’s Rihanna’s.

So, what we should take away from this is—Chris and Rihanna aren’t in each other’s lives, which is nothing but good news.

When Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore stopped tweeting each other excessively lovey-dovey nonsense, the world wondered what was going on with them. It wasn’t like Mr. and Mrs. Kutcher to not dominate the Twittersphere with “proof” that they were not only deeply in love, but a happily married couple. But alas, not long after the tweets fizzled so did their six-year-long marriage.

It’s no secret that Hollywood marriages fail a lot of the time and for different reasons. Sometimes it’s the stress of being in the public eye, occasionally it’s all those almost-real love scenes with a co-star or it’s just Kim Kardashian trying to make a buck and stay relevant. In most cases when rumors start to spread that a couple is on the fritz, their public relations team jumps in and tells them to do something “romantic” in the public eye so all that chitter-chatter about the status of their relationship will come to an end. Sometimes these PDA moments work, other times they fail and the relationship in question follows suit.

With the Internet being the go-to place for everyone to get their news and celebrity fix, it makes sense that famous people have taken their PDA to places like Twitter. However, who’s to know if it’s real or a perfectly concocted scheme to prove to fans that “yes, we’re in love so look at these tweets as proof.”

Some suggestive tweets from Rihanna‘s twitter account have touched off a gossip investigation on the part of The Sun to find out if the 23-year-old singer is back together with her abusive ex Chris Brown. I’m not sure it’s gone that far, but at the very least, there’s some inappropriate shit going on.

“How can you lie to her, while u lay with me???” Rihanna tweeted the other night, supposedly after seeing Chris Brown out with model Karrueche Tran at a Las Vegas party. Since then, she’s sent out a couple more amorous tweets that could be about anyone, but which gossip cops are taking to obviously be about Chris Brown. “Despite everything that has happened RiRi has not stopped loving Chris,” a “source” told The Sun. “They have been in constant contact for some time and things seemed to be stepping up a gear in recent weeks. Many thought these public declarations of love on Twitter were paving the way for an official reconciliation.”

Perhaps even more distressing than the possibility that Rihanna is reconciling with the guy who beat the shit out of her is that fact that few of Brown’s young fans seem to care about the incident anymore. A recent story on NPR revealed that a good 50% of urban youth surveyed in Boston believe that Rihanna was at least partly to blame for the abuse. Quotes gathered from young fans outside a Chris Brown concert in Baltimore modeled some disturbing thinking, as well. “Obviously she played a part in getting beat, or whatever,” one fan told NPR. “However you want to put it.”

This is especially problematic in light of the fact that many Chris Brown and Rihanna fans fall into a demographic that suffers from domestic violence at elevated rates: young black women. I’m not saying it’s Rihanna’s job to teach better lessons, but this should be a wake up call to those actually charged with teaching health classes and the like. Rather than count on celebrities to model healthy behavior, educators should take this as a sign that they need to do a better job teaching kids about abusive relationships, misogynistic culture, and victim-blaming.

As all Twitter users know, the proper way to call and answer through tweets is direct them @ the recipient. So Chris Brown’s tweet, “Love U more than you know,” must be directed at his six million plus followers. And Rihanna’s tweet posted not long after, “”I’ll always love u #1LOVE,” has to also be coincidental and generic. Or is it?

Let’s look at the facts. Rihanna and Chris follow each other on Twitter, which we all know is the first step to rekindling a love affair. Rihanna has flouted the laws of Twitter communication before by apparently talking with Chris’ mother without the use of @.

So obviously, we are witnessing the beginning of their official social media courtship. Next, tiny black hearts exchanged on Facebook and heart-hand photos swapped on DailyBooth.

What do Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, P. Diddy, Alicia Keys, will.i.am and Chris Brown have in common? Lots of things, probably (nice cars, good stylists, membership in the 1%), but the weirdest thing has got to be this extended musical commerical for Megaupload.

In this bizarre commercial, millions of dollars worth of celebrity endorsements are set to an unnervingly catchy song about the virtues of the ubiquitous file sharing site. There are also some stand-alone video testimonials. “I love Megaupload ’cause it’s fast and safe and amazing,” says Kim Kardashian. Do we really trust the person who couldn’t keep her own sex tape from leaking to tell us how to safeguard our sensitive electronic materials?

How did Megaupload afford all these celebrities? Why is that song so catchy? With all the R&B and hiphop artists represented, are they intentionally marketing the site to an “urban” user base? Does anyone think it’s ironic that all these famous recording artists are shilling for a site that millions of people have no doubt used to steal their music? I really hope I get to the bottom of this.

The other day I stumbled across a fantastic Reddit thread asking users to share their celebrity confrontation stories. It was really difficult to narrow it down to five; I wish I could’ve included three times as many, but then it would just look like I’m copying and pasting a Reddit thread over here. So, please read the whole thread when you have a chance.

I picked these based on the following criteria: 1) They’re celebrities that you all recognize, 2) the stories are a mix of behavior you’d expect and situations you wouldn’t, 3) they’re freaking hilarious.

DiabloPablo describes an anecdote that happened to his sister-in-law and that seems to sum up what we hate most about celebrity:

My sister-in-law was at a swanky club in NYC and had to use the bathroom but found it blocked off by Paris Hilton‘s bodyguards so she could use it privately.

Huge, long line and 20 minutes later Paris finally emerges and my sister-in-law makes a snotty (but well deserved) comment to Paris about making everyone wait in line to use the bathroom…Paris then pours a cranberry drink onto my sister-in-law’s white blouse. A bodyguard jumps in between the two and hands my sister-in-law a phone number and says to charge the dry-cleaning to it and ushers Paris out of the club.

I forgot about this one from coolitsember until I reread the thread to find today’s picks… Now I can’t stop giggling about it.

I was at an Obama rally back in August of 2007. We were at Florida A&M, in a smallish gym. We had shaken Obama’s hand and talked to him a bit, and ended up following him back behind the barricade, talking to him. He ended up hugging us and all this stuff, but security was not too keen on it so they asked us to move.

Obama climbs up on the bleachers to take a picture with the band. Security ends up pushing me to move on the other side of the barricade (not hard, but it was crowded), and I fell forward.

I reached up to grab the first thing to stop my fall.

It was Barack Obama’s ass cheek.

He laughed.

As part of his continuing effort to convince everyone he’s just a nice, normal guy and not a crazy narcissistic asshole, Chris Brown put on a skin-tight alien costume and tweeted a picture of his bulge to his 5 million+ followers last night. You know, totally normal behavior.

“I don’t think I can wear this costume tonight! Gonna change!” he oh so coyly captioned it, as if he hadn’t shown his creepy, diagonal tights-bulge to 5 million people already. I think it’s time for a little Internet lesson: Just because it’s online (and not IRL) doesn’t mean different rules apply. I know it’s easy to be an exhibitionist via Twitter, Whosay, and whichever other social media apps you’re using, but if you wouldn’t show up to a party in that thing like, “LOL I shouldn’t be wearing this LOL you can totally see my peen LOL!”, do not do the equivalent thing on social media. The people who see it may not be literally inches from it, but they are still corporeal beings, and they still have the ability to get nauseated IRL. Seriously dude, nobody needed to see that. Netiquette 101.

Rihanna Forgives Chris Brown For Beating The Crap Out Of Her, Wishes Him Well

The just-released Rihanna cover story in the November issue of Esquire contains much to be uncomfortable about. The intense focus on sexuality to the exclusion of Rihanna’s other attributes might give some people pause. The accompanying video was also puzzling to me; do men really fantasize about ravishing a woman all covered in dirt and seaweed? When I try to place myself in that fantasy, all I can think about is the amount of dirt that would get on the guy’s penis, and how much I would not want that dirt in my vagina. Maybe some male readers of Crushable can weigh in. (Do we have male readers?)

But the most heartbreaking part, in my opinion, came when Rihanna was asked about Chris Brown, and gave this answer without skipping a beat:

It’s incredible to see how he pulled out of it the way he did. Even when the world seemed like it was against him, you know? I really like the music he’s putting out. I’m a fan of his stuff. I’ve always been a fan. Obviously, I had some resentment toward him for a while, for obvious reasons. But I’ve put that behind me. It was taking up too much of my time. It was too much anger. I’m really excited to see the breakthrough he’s had in his career. I would never wish anything horrible for him. Never. I never have.

Really, Rihanna? You think it’s great how he convinced everyone it wasn’t such a big deal after he beat the living shit out of you? And you are excited over his career breakthrough? Furthermore, you like his music and wish him well? This is profoundly upsetting to me.

I’m not saying she shouldn’t heal from the experience. It’s not healthy to feel angry and upset about something forever. But to actively wish him well, and imply that he deserves to have a wonderful career? It seems like something is way wrong here. Ask anyone who’s been assaulted. Assuming you aren’t stuck in a tragic cycle of self-blaming, you do not send your fucking attacker flowers.

Was this statement driven by self-blame, or the knowledge that the pop music establishment has for some reason decided that Chris Brown still gets to have a career, which she must now condone or risk being seen as an “angry woman”?
