Discussion Questions:

Why doesn’t Mrs. Kim notice the wedding dress was altered?

Why does Chris feel the need to run Rory’s Sidekick past Lorelai? Was it an excuse to talk with her?

Are you surprised Mrs. Kim kept her own secrets from her mother? Particularly given her reaction to Lane’s secrets?

Why is Kyon still there? Wasn’t she only there on temporary exchange?

When the plans are a bust, why don’t they head back to Lorelai’s for a big girls-only party?

After all her concerns about Chris interfering with Luke, why does Rory invite him as Lorelai’s date to the wedding?

Why do you think Lane’s grandmother became so angry? Because she saw Zack?

Why does Mrs. Kim assume Lane knows nothing of sex?

Can we assume from Mrs. Kim’s assertion of only having had sex once that perhaps Mr. Kim does not live in the US? If he does, where is he?

When Chris talks about Lane & Rory being young, and that there’s time for a stupid fight to screw it up, is he thinking back to what separated him and Lorelai?

Was Chris Sidekick-stalking Rory?

Luke seemed to usher April out of Jess’ party soon after Rory got there, so how was there time for the photo?

Why does Lorelai assume Rory is dating Jess? Is that misplaced anger, from Jess’ actions in the past, or because of her reaction to the photo?

Why does the photo with April upset Lorelai so much?

Despite all the serious efforts Logan has made of late in his school and career, why does Rory keep referring to Logan as being only a party-boy?

Why does Lorelai believe she won’t get married?

Why does Logan being hurt get Rory back into caring about him right away?

Isn’t Rory too drunk to drive to the hospital?

Why does Chris take Lorelai from the couch to the bed, if he just finished putting her on the couch?

When Chris gets up to leave, is Lorelai sad to see him go?

Gilmore Girls Episode Recap:

Kim’s Antiuqes is "Closed for Wedding" and Mrs. Kim happily oversees a kitchen full of Korean women making kimchi, soon to be making dumplings. Lane comes down and is swarmed by her nosy relatives – but sent back upstairs to her hot kimchi-smelling room so the cooking is done on time.

Lorelai comes by with Lane’s wedding dress. Mrs. Kim gets a call and comes out rather distracted. Lorelai pulls out the dress for her, and tells her she made some modifications due to stains, but tried to keep the integrity of the dress. Though it is a whole new dress, essentially (Lane has a huge smile for this), Mrs. Kim doesn’t even notice. Lorelai tells Lane to hide the dress so Mrs. Kim doesn’t notice it has a waist until it’s too late.

Mrs. Kim then comes running through the store yelling after Lorelai. Not about the dress, but about Luke not being in town for the wedding. Mrs. Kim says "she" won’t like it.

"You can’t come alone. An unmarried woman of a certain age, unescorted, wearing the clothes you tend to wear. People will think things. Bad things."

What things? Like Lorelai is a tramp and "possibly for sale". Mrs. Kim says Lorelai has to find a man to take her to the wedding. Lorelai says to herself,

"Lorelai Gilmore, disappointing mothers since 1968."

Rory is 15 minutes late leaving the Yale Daily News for the weekend – an unusual span of days off from her work. Paris tries to pitch an anti-tenure piece to counter her own tenure piece – changing opinions on the topic during her research. Paris wants her to print them both in a point-counterpoint format. Despite both points being written by the same person. Rory says no.

Rosemary and Juliet find Rory – they are going to fly to Costa Rica to meet the guys at the end of the river after their Life & Death Brigade stunt. Wearing grass skirts and coconut bras. Rory can’t go, despite the tempting offer to see Logan after six days with no shower. Rory has a wedding to go to. And is sarcastic enough about it to hint about the "chill from the north."

Lorelai is making gift bags for Lane’s bachelorette and Michel is crooning about his love of weddings. Michel is Lorelai’s date for the wedding. Michel is concerned that Lorelai look her best tomorrow, no late nights, so she doesn’t tarnish his glory. He suggests a silver dress for Lorelai.

Sookie comes screaming from the kitchen about a problem – the dirty cookies expanded to X-rated proportions. Michel is showing his dance moves to Lorelai.

Chris calls – he’s bought Rory a Sidekick and is calling post-purchase to ask if it’s ok to buy it for Rory. Lorelai says he doesn’t need her permission to get Rory a gift. Lorelai asks how Chris and Gigi are doing – Chris holds up the phone – silence. Gigi is a reformed little angel. The "no" word has been working out.

Rory finds Lane and Mrs. Kim are frantically re-arranging the house in preparation for Mrs. Kim’s mother to come – she has not left Korea in 45 years. They are de-cluttering and re-adding back Big Buddha. They are removing all crucifix and Jesus things, as well. Mrs. Kim asks Lane to hide them under Lane’s floorboards. Mrs. Kim’s mother does not know she’s a Seventh Day Adventist. Lane has discovered she’s only the latest Kim woman to hide her life from her mother under floorboards. She hopes for all boys for her kids.

Mrs. Kim’s mother arrives and yells at Lane to come down, then giggles at her, giving her a hug. She then inspects the house, talking in Korean. Finally, she goes to kneel in front of the Buddha. Rory asks what she happened, and Lane replies:

"Three complaints, two insults, and a hefty dose of religious guilt."

Mrs. Kim is praying and bowing with her mother – the ritual of a hundred and eight bows. Lane tries to tell her mother that she’s heading out for her bachelorette party.

Lane, in her veil, is escorted out of Doose’s with a bunch of giggling girls in tiaras. Rory reads off the grocery list:

"Beer! More beer. Pretzels and beer. Various chocolaty treats, alternative alcohol for those who don’t like beer, and beer."

The evening begins at the Black, White and Read Bookstore where they will sneak in booze to get drunk watching American Gigolo. With full frontal from Mr. Gere himself. Kyon comes running up, having had to wait for some Kims to fall asleep before sneaking out. Kyon is now double-dressing like Lane used to, and has an Abril Lavigne shirt underneath.

Rory’s new Sidekick rings – it’s Chris texting her again. He’s been texting every five minutes since he got Rory the phone. Including about the special on celery at the supermarket. Lorelai grabs the phone to text back:

"Your daughter’s about to see Richard Gere’s penis, enjoy your celery!"

One of Lane’s friends is already throwing up! The girls, dejected, head back to the square, having come to the movie late. The paper printed the times wrong, and they may have missed the "Gigo-down-low" portion of the flick. They have 45 minutes until the next showing, so they try to figure out what to do.

Zack and his bachelor party friends come around the corner, just having left Dell’s bar, which closed early. Lorelai had planned to go there after the movie. The only other bar, the Chimney Sweep, just burned down. Brian suggests all going to his aunt’s house, she has a rec room.

Lane says they’re not doing this – they are supposed to have separate bachelor and bachelorette parties. They boys, then the girls, each try to separate to find some fun. Later, the girls end up at Brian’s aunt’s house. We hear Zack yelling "Bachelorettes in the house!"

Rory, all dressed up for the wedding, is texting Chris on the couch about his feet sizes. Lorelai wants to know which purse is less whore-ish. Michel calls – he just got tickets to Celine Dion, front-row… so, he’s bailing on the wedding. He’s only seen Celine Dion five times.

Lorelai knows she can’t show up to the wedding without a man. Rory poses a solution – that Chris come as her date. She’s already texted to ask him and he can be there in 20 minutes.

Some of the men are looking disapprovingly at Lorelai while she waits for Christopher outside Mrs. Kim’s. It’s time for the Buddhist wedding. Mrs. Kim and her mother file in, then Zack (in Buddhist garb) is followed in by Brian and two other guys. Lane demurely walks in, fully clothed in Buddhist traditional clothes. Zack signals he likes his clothes, which makes Lane smile.

The ceremony starts and Mrs. Kim’s mother soon becomes angry and begins whispering something to Mrs. Kim. Grandmother Kim walks out and Mrs. Kim follows – you can hear them fight during the duration of the wedding.

Mrs. Kim breathlessly follows her mother to a taxi, where two men put in her baggage. The second she’s around the corner, Mrs. Kim turns back and yells "Go!" then sprints off. Lorelai and Chris are confused, so Rory fills them in – that was the grandmother’s wedding, now they have the mother’s wedding, and:

"There’s fifty-eight seats and sixty-two Koreans!"

They take off running, and then run in-line with Sookie and Jackson to get to the church. Miss Patty has saved a whole row, just in case. And she’s been there all night to get those seats!

Rory is helping Lane into her wedding gown. Rory sets up her camera to snap their photo. Mrs. Kim walks in and makes small note that the dress looks different. But, has more serious and upsetting things to talk about. Mrs. Kim brings up the wedding night. Mrs. Kim says marriage is a job, that there will be sacrifices, terrible things, and a man’s expectations start early. From the kiss, to the sharing of the bed. Lane tries to beg her mother to stop.

"You have to do it with this boy, Lane. You’re just going to have to do it. Hopefully, if you’re lucky like me, you’ll only have to do it once."

Lane cringes!

The door to the church opens and the Wedding March begins. Mrs. Kim walks in, then Rory. Lorelai and Chris are beaming at her. And then Lane, walking proudly towards Zack. Lorelai reminisces about when Rory met Lane:

"It was Rory’s first day of kindergarten, and she insisted on wearing my Chico and the Man t-shirt, which I thought would either elicit confused shrugs or label her as the weird seventies sitcom kid. And we walked in the classroom, and Lane came running up to her and offered to share her crayons with her and I was so grateful, ’cause I thought even if Lane turned out to be a psycho bad seed serial killer kid, at least Rory had a friend. Who knew it would turn out to be a lifelong friendship?"

Chris says they’re young – there’s lots of time for a stupid fight to screw it up. After the ceremony begins, and the minister begins speaking in Korean, Chris says Rory could be next - Lorelai looks at him with a shocked look of awareness on her face.

Lane and Zack comes out of the church amidst screaming and cheering friends and family. Lane and Zack kiss happily, then Lane hugs Rory while Brian hugs Zack. Sookie & Jackson go to check on their babysitter, who seems too perfect. Zack is raving about how comfortable his Buddhist outfit was. Brian and Kyon exchange a flirtatious smile.

The bar is nowhere to be found. When the food comes out, Rory tells them the food is not for them. The Koreans are taking their food in record time, in to-go containers, dumping a cheque into a bag for Lane, and are driving right off! Lane is impressed with the generosity of Mrs. Kim’s friends. Mrs. Kim tells Lane it was a very nice ceremony, and thanks her for doing the second ceremony for her grandmother. Lane says it made her feel special. Mrs. Kim is now going home. And, with pride and love, tells Lane she’ll be wearing earplugs, so won’t be able to hear what’s going on outside at all hours of the night.

"Thank you, Mama, for everything! And look at it this way, you’re not losing a daughter. You’re gaining a son… Who likes to wear a dress."

Zack has on his robe again. Mrs. Kim says Zack had better make Lane happy. Lane says he will. Lane gives the thumbs up to Kirk, who sticks up a sign for Yummy Bartenders. The bartenders come out and set up the bar while Zack kisses Lane. Lorelai comes by saying there’s something wrong with Lane’s dress. She takes off Lane’s skirt, revealing a mini skirt underneath.

The cake is a sexy photo of Lane & Zack. The party – very full of alcohol. Brian is dancing with Kyon. Kirk is asking Rory if his group of bartenders are yummy enough. Jackson and Sookie have Lorelai call the babysitter to see if she sounds drunk – she’s ok. Rory comes back with drinks, with extra cherries. Chris takes the opportunity to apologize to Rory for Sidekick-stalking her. Apparently, Lorelai now has the Sidekick!

Lane and Zack are making the rounds, quite tispy. Lane’s dress is exposed differently on the top too, with a pink v-neck instead of the tight collar. Lorelai’s modification. Rory takes a photo of them all.

Lorelai asks to see Rory’s photo and spots on in the camera of Rory with April, when Rory went there for Jess’ open house. Lorelai immediately assumes Rory is seeing Jess. She has a sarcastic "huh" hearing that Logan doesn’t know, since he’s in Costa Rica. Lorelai notes how she and April looked like "pals" in the photo. Rory apologizes for not telling her about April, she felt weird about it. She keeps repeating that it was a fluke, not something Luke had planned.

Hep Alien take their stage – their first concert since their reunion, as well as since the wedding! After Zack takes another kiss, they begin playing I’m a Believer. A love song for Lane!

Kirk is convinced his bartender is hitting on Lulu for giving her lots of fruit in her drink. Kirk announces to the crowd that he has fired the Yummy Bartenders. So it’s now "serve yourself." He storms off about them being too yummy.

Brian is making out with Kyon! Chris and Rory, left alone at the table, are talking marriage. He’s a little cynical about marriage, as a concept, but is glad he came to this one. Rory is glad he came too. Chris asks where Logan is, and Rory says he’s in Costa Rica for "play, always play."

"he’s going to jump off something and raft down somewhere, climb up a thing, swing around on a vine. Stuff like that."

Chris tells Rory that he likes Logan, and likes Rory with Logan. That he approves. Rory says it’s not like they’re getting married, but Chris suggests that if it changes, he wants her to know. Rory says ok. Chris is drunk, says he used to be much better at partying. Rory suggests Logan give him some tips when he gets back.

Brian goes up to say a few kind words about Brian and how crazy Lane is for being with Zack, a joke. Rory gets up to toast as well, and Lorelai returns with a tray of shots. For twenty, it would seem! Chris argues he’s an upstanding man and father, but Lorelai reminds him that’s how he became one. They do a shot. For shots numbers 3-7, Rory takes the stage to share a letter that Lane wrote her in 1995:

"Dear Rory. How was your lunch? Mine was bad. Did you have ham again? If you did, I am sorry, but mine was worse. I thought you should know that today at recess, I decided that I am going to marry Alex Bacchus. He has a very nice head and his ears don’t stick out like Roddy Winston’s do. I will love him forever, no matter what. See you at Brownies. Love, Lane."

Lorelai tries to get Chris to keep drinking, but he decides he’s had enough. Lorelai takes yet another shot, number 8, then decides to go up to toast the bride and groom herself. Lorelai takes the stage, with effort, and after nearly running into the drum set, begins her speech. She says how happy she is for Lane, because it’s hard to get married:

"Believe me. I should know. I mean, seriously, because Lane is married, and next thing, it’ll be my daughter, and then my granddaughter, but not me. I’m not getting married. No, it ain’t for me, it’s not in the cards. But. Hey, do you know what date I’m not getting married? June third. Do not save the date. Do you hear me? Do whatever you want on June third, because there’s nothing at all happening on that day."

Rory and Chris saw this going badly after just the first sentence. Lorelai is talking about the 8 shots of tequila she just had and not hiring the Yummy Bartenders for her "not wedding" when Chris and Rory go to take Lorelai off the stage.

Chris is carrying Lorelai into the house. They’ve already poured in a couple of gallons of coffee, but Rory is intent on making more. Chris props up Lorelai, to avoid the pillow-face, but she’s quite passed out. Rory gets a call, and goes silent.

Rory rushes back to the living room saying Logan is hurt, and she doesn’t know if he’s alright. Colin had just called her but the line was bad. Logan is being airlifted to a hospital in New York. Rory needs to rush off to the hospital, so asks Chris to leave a note for Lorelai when she wakes up.

Chris picks up Lorelai to take her to bed. She’s whining about it. Late that night the phone rings. Lorelai eventually hears it and picks up the phone. Chris is seen sleeping in the chair in Lorelai’s bedroom. It’s Luke on the phone. Chris takes that as his cue to leave. Lorelai waves at him.
