Dave Franco and Christopher Mintz-Plasse Need Your Help to Fund Their Short Film

Buoyed by the success of his Funny Or Die videos where he has sex with either Christopher Mintz-Plasse or himself, Dave Franco is looking to go bigger. He and Christopher shot a short film that they want to submit to festivals, but first they need your help. As he explains on their Kickstarter page, they need money to cover post-production costs — $2,500, to be exact. What’s surprising is that they would feel the need to ask for money; don’t they have enough from their latest project Fright Night?

Here’s Dave’s cute, rambling explanation about the project. Unfortunately, we don’t get to see any footage, but we know that the project is about a game of “Would You Rather?” where all of your choices actually come true. Dave mentions that his mom appeared in an uncomfortable scene; we’re assuming his character gets one of those “Would you rather, your mom or [a grosser choice]?” kind of questions, and he has to deal with the consequences.

The thing is, between yesterday and today, they already exceeded their goal of $2,500: The project currently has funding for over $3,000. There’s a solid two weeks til the end of the Kickstarter period (September 9), so there’s no telling how much they’ll get from fans. To be fair, they offer some cool perks: Almost every donor will receive a signed copy of the DVD, and if you’re feeling especially generous and donate $1,500 or above, you’re invited to dinner with Dave in L.A.

We’re still wondering why two fairly successful celebrities need to ask strangers for money for their projects. You would think that Dave, who’s had bit roles going back to Superbad, could cough up his share or ask brother James for funding. But maybe he’s trying to go this one alone without financial backing from his famous sibling.

Now we get why Alamo Drafthouse is consistently voted the beast theater in the country. They’re the ones behind the viral video of an angry customer’s bleep-filled voicemail, which they used in their famous “Don’t Talk” campaign of PSAs that run before new movies. Today we stumbled upon their official YouTube channel, which collects all of their “Don’t Talk” PSAs — including the hilarious ones with celebrities like Jason Momoa and Dave Franco. Not all of them succeed — therein lies the fun — but you have to hand it to the theater and the stars for turning out such wacky videos.

There are two forces working together to make Fright Night a delightfully fun, terrifying vampire movie: The tight script by Buffy alum Marti Noxon, and the cast. You already know that it’s got a stellar leading cast – Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, David Tennant — but there are four hilarious cameos that really enhance the movie. See if you’re sharp-eyed enough to catch these once you go to see this excellent remake.

Lisa Loeb and Brian Huskey as Ed’s parents. If we had to imagine the two souls who would conceive Christopher Mintz-Plasse, you can’t get much better than one of the most recognizable Best Week Ever panelists and the ’90s singer who understood our every heartbreak. She’s even wearing her signature glasses! These two are in the movie for too short a time; we’re really hoping that there will be deleted scenes on the DVD where we get to learn more about Ed’s dorky upbringing.

Dave Franco as a bully. Every high school movie needs the cool jerk who has an inherent hatred for geeks, and Fright Night is no exception. Dave stays in the picture a bit longer than the others, so you’ll have some time to linger on his resemblance to brother James, though he does a better job of playing a bully, in our opinion. (You could never take James-the-bully seriously in movies like Whatever It Takes with that huge grin, but Dave seems to have the actual necessary loathing down.)

Chris Sarandon as an unfortunate motorist. You might better know Chris as Susan Sarandon‘s ex-husband, but he also played Jerry in the original Fright Night. Even his name on IMDb is a nod back to the movie: He’s called Jay Dee. I don’t want to give away anything more about his role, but you’ll know who he is when everyone in the theater starts applauding.

In an odd pairing, Christopher Mintz-Plasse has a cameo in the new Kid Cudi video. Cudi dresses himself up as Hendrix in his track for “Erase Me,” while McLovin’ gets to play a British rockstar who parties too hard. And then there’s Kanye West in a golden Caesar crown.

This song is awesome, and we’ve already watched the vid twice.

‘Kick-Ass’ Star Aaron Johnson Welcomes Baby Daughter

20-year-old Kick-Ass star Aaron Johnson welcomed baby daughter Wylda Rae yesterday with his director fiance Sam Taylor-Wood. The couple has been laying low for the last month, but Kick-Ass co-star Christopher Mintz-Plasse confirmed the birth on his Twitter yesterday, writing, “Aaron Johnsons baby was born!! So exciting!”

Aaron and Sam, who already has two daughters from an earlier marriage, became a scandalous couple after meeting on the set of the John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy. 43-year-old Sam directed teenage Aaron in the film, and news of her pregnancy started making British tabs as Aaron’s international popularity grew with the release of Kick-Ass this spring. The couple, who are camera shy (that’s them photographed early last month at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards in London), plan to wed.

Although Aaron has spoken about how happy he is in his personal life, he has to keep his career going — if for no other reason then to support his growing family. He was recently passed over as the lead in the upcoming Spider-Man reboot, but his thriller Chatroom debuted at Cannes and a Kick-Ass sequel is in the works.

Update: Ain’t It Cool News has an inside scoop saying today is Johnson’s lucky day – he’s “100%” locked in to play Cyclops in the new Matthew Vaughn X-Men adaptation…a rumor that’s been circulating for months now.

80s Cult Horror Film Remake Gets An R Rating – We are getting so pumped for the remake of Fright Night, especially because Christopher Mintz-Plasse is playing Evil Ed. But apparently the movie is not so much a faithful adaptation as a completely different movie with some similar plot points? Also: it’s in 3D. Well, we’re still stoked. (via Dread Central)

Considering how inappropriate some found Chloe’s Hit-Girl character in the film, this nervous HJ gesture seems positively innocent. Maybe.

Welcome to Crush This, your weekly guide to what’s new in movies, music and TV. We’ve navigated the inner reaches of our entertainment-obsessed brains in search of all the pop culture landscape has to offer. On deck this week: Kick-Ass, a new season of Deadliest Catch, Doctor Who returns, Jason Castro‘s debut album and, the moment we’ve all been waiting for, Glee. Is. Back.

TV: Don’t forget to check your DVRs: Glee‘s first episode of 2010 will kick off on Tuesday at 9:28 p.m. ET, giving us two extra minutes of harmonic goodness, but seriously messing up our Tivo schedules. However, we’re very much looking forward to the introduction of two new characters from rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline: Jonathan Groff as potential Rachel Berry love interest Jesse St. James and Idina Menzel as Vocal Adrenaline’s coach and possibly Rachel’s mom. Songs in the first episode will be following the “hell” theme, including the Beatles “Hello.”

Not into Glee? Bravo is also premiering a new series on Tuesday, 9 By Design, which follows husband and wife design team Bob and Courtney Novogratz at work and at home where they juggle their business with raising six kids — and one on the way. Also on Tuesday, the newest season of Deadliest Catch will premiere on Discovery, and we’ll be watching to see how they handle the recent death of Cornelia Marie captain Phil Harris.

Earlier in the week, check out new shows Double Exposure on Bravo and Tough Love: Couples on VH1. And on Saturday, BBC America premieres a new season of Dr. Who at 9 p.m., after the special Dr. Who: The Ultimate Guide.

Movies: It’s a strange twist on superhero movies, but it looks like Kick-Ass will be a rocking good time at the movies this weekend. The film, which follows a group of DIY superhero vigilantes, including teenager Dave Lizewski aka Kick-Ass (Aaron Johnson) and father-daughter crime-fighting duo Big Daddy and Hit Girl (Nicholas Cage and Chloe Moretz), as they battle New York City bad guys like Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), debuts Thursday.

Music: Dreadlocked Season 7 American Idol contestant Jason Castro‘s self-titled debut album drops Tuesday. You may have seen him perform the album’s first single, “That’s What I’m Here For” at The Bachelor‘s Jason‘s wedding to Molly on ABC last month, and the song will undoubtedly be a staple at weddings this spring and summer.

Zac Efron has been nominated alongside his Hairspray co-star Nikki Blonsky for a Breakthrough Award at this year’s MTV Movie Awards!

Other nominees include Megan Fox (Transformers), Chris Brown (This Christmas), Seth Rogen (Knocked Up), Jonah Hill (Superbad), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad) and Michael Cera (Superbad).
