The Northside Festival, produced by L Magazine, will take place June 11-14 and will encompass all or most of the shows happening in Williamsburg and Greenpoint during that time. Like CMJ, you can buy tickets to individual shows, or you can get a badge. Also like CMJ, a badge does not guarantee entry so get there… More »

CMJ: Shearwater, Jens Lekman, Phenomenal Handclap Band

CMJ: Shearwater, Jens Lekman, Phenomenal Handclap Band

And the music continues…

Shearwater, Jens Lekman, and the Phenomenal Handclap Band all played Brooklynvegan’s showacase on Tuesday night at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Shearwater was the “suprise special guest” which delighted me because I was supposed to see them on Monday night at (le) Poisson Rouge and could not attend at the last minute. They really are a fantastic band, making full use of various instruemnts like an upright bass, glockenspiel, and homemade dulcimer.  Lead singer Jonathan Meiburg’s voice is deep… More »

CMJ: Ponytail and Passion Pit

CMJ: Ponytail and Passion Pit

Two much hyped about bands, Ponytail and Passion Pit, are both playing their share of CMJ shows. I caught them at the Brooklynvegan showcase on Tuesday night at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

I had been reading a lot about Ponytail the past few months and so was very excited to finally check them out. Hailing from Baltimore, they are certainly one-of-a-kind. The three instrument players each excel at their craft, especiall the drummer who was superb. The music they make is… More »

CMJ: Emmy the Great and the Sammies

CMJ: Emmy the Great and the Sammies

CMJ, the annual week-long College Music Journal festival is well underway. As usual, it is host to dozens of excellent bands from around the globe. Two bands, Emmy the Great and the Sammies, played the Brooklynvegan showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg Tuesday night.

Emmy the Great is absolutely adorable. Hailing from the UK, her songs are pretty nice too, especially one number called “Gloria” that made excellent use of a mandolin. Her voice is lovely, her lyrics interesting, and her… More »

The Dears are in NYC, Album Giveaway

The Dears are in NYC, Album Giveaway

Montreal natives The Dears just released a new album called Missiles this week and are in New York to celebrate. The album, an interesting combo of Radiohead-esque vocals combined with some awesome classic rock style guitar riffs. The new album is a bit on the morose side, but Murray Lightburn’s lyrics and vocals are ultimately beautiful. Here is their new video for “Money Babies.”

The band is in New York right now and is playing at Hiro Ballroom TONIGHT with Eulogies…. More »

Irata at Trash bar

Irata at Trash bar

Check out Irata, playing at Trash Bar in Brooklyn on Thursday at 10 pm. From their publicist:
If you’re into something that sounds a bit like Mono/Mogwai… influenced heavily by Zepplin… I think you’re going to like the instrumental jams that Irata have in store for folks at this year’s CMJ performance.

Irata are from Greensboro, NC and have been hammering around the U.S. since 2007.  Their S/T release has been a favorite of college stations across the country as well as… More »

Baltimore Round Robin: Feet Night

Baltimore Round Robin: Feet Night

The second night of the Baltimore Round Robin at (le) Poisson Rouge took place on Saturday night and this time the theme was Feet Night. This meant that all the music was more rhythmic and generally dance-inducing. Somehow, this translated into moshing and crowd surfing. People were much more obnoxious at this show, trying to move to each stage that had a band playing on it for every song, which makes for a lot of pushing and shoving. People should… More »
