I’d LIKE to Go to San Diego Comic-Con, But…

I'd LIKE to Go to San Diego Comic-Con, But...

Hey, guys. It’s Lucia, your friendly neighborhood nerd. Can we talk about fan conventions for a moment? Awesome. Because guess what? San Diego Comic-Con, commonly known as SDCC, is happening this weekend, and as usual I’m bemoaning the fact that I live on the other side of the country. SDCC is the pinnacle of geekdom, a spectacular four-day extravaganza that celebrates comics, sci-fi, fantasy, anime, and all things nerd. This is the magical place where sneak peeks at hotly anticipated new movies happen, where intelligent discussions about the ethical and moral issues faced by superheroes past and present occur, and where fans get to mingle with their favorite actors, writers, artists, and filmmakers. Every year at this time, I bitch about the fact that I’m not there. Here’s the thing: You all know the sorts of things I write about. You know I’m a giant nerd. When I was living in London, I took a day trip out to Cardiff, Wales just to see a temporary exhibit of Doctor Who props and costumes at a random mall. When Return of the King came out, I totally would have done Trilogy Tuesday if I hadn’t been taking a Latin exam while it was happening. I’ve been to many midnight screenings of high-profile geek movies. But you know what?

13 Spectacularly Creative Cosplay Costumes

13 Spectacularly Creative Cosplay Costumes

My own particular nerdy tendencies have never reached dressing-up-as-beloved-fictional-characters heights, but I’m pretty impressed by those who DO venture into that territory. What better place, then, to showcase your lovingly-constructed masterpieces than San Diego Comic-Con, which incidentally is happening this weekend? We’ll bring you images of the best of this year’s SDCC costumes as soon as they start surfacing, but until then, in honor of the event, we bring you 13 of the most creative cosplay costumes we’ve ever seen from previous years. They’re not necessarily the most detailed of costumes (though a few are); but they all demonstrate some excellent outside-the-proverbial-box thinking. Who would you dress up as? Tell us in the comments! More »

How to Enjoy Comic-Con if You Didn’t Make it to San Diego

How to Enjoy Comic-Con if You Didn't Make it to San Diego

So you didn’t get to go to this year’s Comic-con. Does that mean this weekend you’re going to mope in your basement reading luckier fans’ twitter updates? No, because as a true nerd you’re creative enough to make your own fun. And if you’re drawing a blank, here are a few suggestions to help you have just as much fun as those people melting in their Pikachu outfits in California. More »

OMG, There’s Gonna Be Another LARP Movie

OMG, There's Gonna Be Another LARP Movie

A couple of my good friends are active LARPers — they participate in Live Action Role Playing, a form of gaming where they act out the medieval/futuristic/thriller adventures. When the acronym or even that explanation still draws blank stares, they tell people, “It’s like Christopher Mintz-Plasse‘s character in Role Models.” Even though LARP is starting to break through into mainstream culture, it’s still mostly a reference for a niche crowd, like geeky CollegeHumor readers or Degrassi fans.

Until now. One of the panels at San Diego Comic-Con next week is for the upcoming indie comedy The Knights of Badassdom, starring a bevy of well-known geek actors: Ryan Kwanten (True Blood), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Danny Pudi (Community), and Summer Glau (Firefly). Imagine my astonishment, then, to learn that it’s about LARP. More »

Comic-Con: Better Fashion Than the Runways?

Comic-Con: Better Fashion Than the Runways?

We’ve poked fun at San Diego’s Comic-Con before, but this weekend at its New York equivalent, held at the Javits Center on the West Side Highway, we were struck by an epiphany. Sure, there were the usual dorks, geeks, and fanboys lining up to meet Bruce Campbell or see a panel on My Super Psycho 16 Part 2, but there were also a ton of hot ladies, dressed up like a Manga fetishist’s wet dream.

We’ve been to Fashion Week here in NYC, where girls that look like wire hangers show off clothes that women of regular proportions could never hope to fit into. Here at Comic-Con, the outfits may have been more superhero than runway, but were no less appealing or sexy…and were made for every sized woman in mind. Eat your heart out boys, Halloween has come early this year, and these ladies are ready to kick your ass. More »

The Comic-Con: Where Couture Fashion Meets Art In Experimental Spaces

The Comic-Con: Where Couture Fashion Meets Art In Experimental Spaces

I was a little skeptical about missing out on pre-Fashion Week coverage so I could cover Comic-Con out in San Diego. For those not in the biz (like me!), the first thing you have to realize is that the “con” stands for “convention” and not some place where everybody goes to get gypped out of all their money. (Although it should be!) If you thought the hordes of garish, pushy, wannabes that descend like ratty locusts at the Barney’s Sample… More »

Putting The ‘Con’ In Comic-Con: Stabbing At The Convention

Putting The 'Con' In Comic-Con: Stabbing At The Convention

It’s getting dangerous to be a comics nerd, at least at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego.

Yesterday, after the Resident Evil: Aftermath panel, featuring Milla Jovovich, Wentworth Miller and a pregnant Ali Larter, wrapped up at the convention, a fight broke out and at least two fans were stabbed. “At least two film fans, one reportedly in a Harry Potter T-shirt, were stabbed with a pen. One suffered a bloody laceration between the eye and the temple…the other was stabbed… More »

Crushable’s Best Of Last Week

Crushable's Best Of Last Week

Last week geared us up for the new seasons of Jersey Shore and Mad Men with the constant rumors about some of the stars of the show, though we spent most of the time thinking about Lindsay Lohan in jail and vampires. D’uh. What else? Oh, Olivia Munn says hey. Here’s some of our favorite posts from last week.

Entertainment:

• We took you behind the scenes of The Bachelor’s auditioning process, and it wasn’t pretty.

• Does Leonardo DiCaprio look like a… More »

Is Eva Mendes Pregnant?

Is Eva Mendes Pregnant?

UPDATE: No, “Eva is not pregnant,” her spokesman told Crushable early Saturday, responding to our Comic-Con intel below:

A Crushable eyewitness noticed something extra-curvalicious about Eva Mendes at Friday’s Comic-Con panel discussion for her new film The Other Guys.

“She looked pregnant to me,” says our spy, observing that she kept “hiding her belly” with her hands.

A request for comment from Eva’s representative was not immediately returned Friday night.

Eva, who dates filmmaker George Augusto, seemed more voluptuous than usual, and our source… More »

TravelShorts PWNed London's Comic-Con, (Unless You Have Better)

While the rest of you sucker’s are in San Diego to hear Joss Whedon and J.J. Abrams speak on the same panel (J.J. + J.! You nerds.) about hard sci-fi vampires or something, this dude TravelShorts on Flickr has already posted the best photo ever taken at a Comic convention. (Sorry, Adrianne Curry.)

We didn’t even know London had its own Comic-Con, but now that we think about it, it makes sense. Neil Gaiman! Alan Moore (who definitely wouldn’t show up)!… More »

Gallery: Angelina Jolie Looks Spicy At 'Salt' Comic-Con Panel

What was once just a gathering of comic book fans has morphed into a star-studded extravaganza, so that it’s nothing new to see A-listers like Angelina Jolie sitting on panels at Comic-Con 2010 in San Diego this week. Yesterday, Angelina wowed the Comic-Con audience in black leather jacket and black pencil skirt, as she joined Salt co-star Liev Schreiber to talk about the spy thriller, which hits theaters today.

During the panel, Angelina discussed shooting Salt, which was originally supposed to… More »

The Best Of … Comic-Con ‘High-Concept’ Costumes

The Best Of ... Comic-Con 'High-Concept' Costumes

We’ve already seen Adrianne Curry and her Princess Leia bikini as Comic-Con kicks off in San Deigo, and we know that Blake Lively and Angelina Jolie are going to be there, promoting their new films. But really, the point of these comic conventions isn’t just nerding out at panels, but checking out the awesome costumes that people spend half the year developing. Here are some of our favorite conceptual pieces. Don’t worry if people don’t “get it.” They just aren’t… More »

Angelina Jolie Is Going to Be At Comic-Con? – We didn’t even know Salt was the kind of film they’d be into at the comic convention (since it’s not Pixar, not based on a comic, and doesn’t involve anyone from Doctor Who spin-off or an Adult Swim program), but hey, anything to get more dudes in the building, right?
