NBC Is Bringing Back Community!

The flash mob, CollegeHumor video, and Occupy Twitter all worked! NBC is bringing back its beloved sitcom Community after fans rallied against the network’s decision in November to put the series on indefinite hiatus. However, the fantastic news is tinged with some wariness, as shows on the bubble are never truly as safe as they were before being placed on careful watch.

Indeed, the official confirmation was a bit anticlimactic. The Daily Beast managed to catch NBC Entertainment President Robert Greenblatt at the TCAs, where he told them that Community is definitely on everyone’s minds:

“Community is coming back. We just had to get some stuff moved around for midseason, but it’s not going anywhere. I can’t say anything about next season yet, but the fact that people think it’s gone… I need to fix that.”

So it sounds like we’ll definitely get the rest of season 3 (the last episode aired on December 8), but no one’s making any promises about season 4. This better not be some sort of stopgap or way to buy time; but I hope that due to the show’s rabid following, The Powers That Be will decide to invest in Community for another few years.

Community Fans Are Setting Up A Flash Mob To Bring Their Show Back

Right before the Christmas hiatus, Community fans are trying to get NBC‘s attention in a big way. On Sunday, the @OccupyNBC Twitter retweeted a call to fans to participate in a flashmob this Thursday, December 22, at New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza. The Craigslist posting instructs fans to show up at 1 p.m. with tiny Christmas trees and black felt/paper goatees — a reference to the “Remedial Chaos Theory” episode from this past season — and to sing “O Christmas Tree” for a half hour.

The intent is to chat with NBC folks (since the network’s shows and offices are in 30 Rock) and show how much Community deserves to come back after its current hiatus. There’s been no word yet from NBC if they’ll bring the show back.

There’s also a Facebook group for the flashmob; one commenter asks, Shouldn’t we be singing “Oh Christmas Troy”? Very true.

Wait, then who’s Batman? It’s totally Star-Burns, isn’t it? Jeff as Two-Face is perfect, but I’m pretty upset no one was rendered as The Penguin. That could totally be series creator Dan Harmon though, right? Or wait… maybe he’s Batman!

Man, this episode of Community would have been great.

Video: Community Cast And CollegeHumor Want You To Save Their Show

So while Community‘s fans are trying to appeal to the networks with their @OccupyNBC Twitter campaign, the show’s stars have joined up with CollegeHumor in a new video asking you to save… Greendale Community College. Yep, it’s entirely in-character, with Joel McHale, Donald Glover, Danny Pudi, and others walking the hallowed halls of their “fifth-rate safety school” to show you what you’ll be missing.

That’s right: The stars are trying to appeal to more viewers, to create fans who will then join the existing fans in reaching out to the network. All very self-referential, all very fitting for this fine show.

Community Fans Create Try To Save Their Show With OccupyNBC Twitter

Last night NBC released its fall schedule, which contained the disturbing news that the network was “benching” its acclaimed comedy Community for an indefinite period, as Alan Sepinwall first reported on Twitter. Fans were understandably devastated by this news: Last night through just minutes ago, Tumblr has been awash with mourning, essays praising the show, and perhaps some plans to bring Community back.

While the majority of responses have been to post .gifs of Donald Glover‘s character Troy sobbing with messages like “I’m going to sit in a corner and cry,” some fans are being more proactive. The new rallying cry has become Six seasons and a movie, and fans have organized themselves into a variety of movements.

You have the traditional method of signing a “Save Community” electronic petition (linked through Facebook); then there’s the step that all fan communities take, which is deciding on a symbol to mail to the network in the thousands so as to get their attention. For Roswell, it was mini bottles of Tabasco sauce; for Jericho, loads of peanuts. Community fans seem to have decided on felt beards; you can even print out your own here. (If anyone could explain the significance of the felt beard, please do!)

But the one that most caught our attention is also the most shrewdly topical: OccupyNBC, a Twitter account whose aim is to get those six seasons and a movie. They don’t say whether they’ll actually physically show up at the NBC building, but you can bet they’re passionate. They’re currently at fewer than 200 followers, so lend your support, why don’t you?

To be clear, the show hasn’t been officially cancelled, and its status is still up in the air. The New York Times’ Brian Stelter reported (via colleague Bill Carter) that NBC says the show will be off the air for only a little while. However, its chances of getting renewed are now a whole lot slimmer.

The Cougar Town Cast Is Making A Bunch Of Fun Cameos On TV Shows This Fall

Cougar Town creator Bill Lawrence is a big fan of cross-promotion: Last season, the Community character Abed (Danny Pudi) popped up in the background of a Cougar episode; and when Scrubs was still on the air, Bill let star Sarah Chalke play a recurring role on How I Met Your Mother.

Now, the entire Cougar Town cast is doing a mass exodus of cross-promotion all over TV this fall. Since the show won’t return for its third season until January, they figured they had time to kill. Plus, it’s a great form of guerilla marketing that fans will actually enjoy watching.

So far 13 shows are onboard to feature the stars what sound like they’ll be non-speaking roles—a treat for loyal viewers who can spot Busy Phillips, Dan Byrd, Josh Hopkins, or Brian Van Holt. Here are the ones we know, by network:

ABC: Body of Proof, Dancing with the Stars, Castle, Man Up!, The Middle
CBS: How I Met Your Mother
Nick, Jr.: Yo Gabba Gabba

The two big guest roles so far both happen tonight, on Shonda Rhimes‘ two medical dramas. Ian Gomez will convince us he’s a doctor on Grey’s Anatomy; then Courteney Cox and Christa Miller play a lesbian couple at a fertility clinic on Private Practice.

Courteney and daughter Coco were spotted earlier this week on Dancing with the Stars to cheer on her estranged husband David Arquette, but we assume that that appearance was unofficial. Whichever actor appears on that show will probably do so in-character.

Nerd alert: Did you guys catch that brilliant Doctor Who parody on Community last week? Because it was brilliant. Did I not make that clear? BRILLIANT. It has to do with exactly what Abed (Daniel Pudi) is going to do now that his favorite television show has been cancelled. In case you are one of the sad people who missed it, here it is, just for you:

I would totally watch Inspector Spacetime if it existed. It doesn’t; but that’s why I’m really glad that this poster for it does. In fact, Inspector Spacetime seems to have developed a life of its own, because this is only one of many, MANY hilarious and awesome images that fans the world over have created since its appearance. And this is how memes are born. Because the question isn’t where. It’s when.

Until the live-action Captain Planet actually gets cast, Funny Or Die’s made a pretty wickedly funny placeholder: The Planeteers, in amazingly accurate costumes, call up Captain Planet (Don Cheadle) to get rid of the bad guys polluting the Earth, but Cap gets drunk on power and goes eco-terrorist on any person who so much as snaps a twig.

Although they’re not as good as our dream cast, FOD’s choices for the Planeteers are still pretty inspired. That’s Community‘s Gillian Jacobs playing Soviet beauty Linka, and pregnant Disney star Brenda Song as Gi — both with ’90s-stereotype accents. And whoever made the costumes for this skit paid close attention to the Planeteers’ outfits and awful hairstyles. Kwame’s afro is scarily accurate.
