The Coney Island Mermaid Parade might be one of the few last vestiges of “old” New York’s theatricality. Which is to say, every year it’s okay to dress up like a drag queen fish, hang out with the Velvet Underground’s Lou Reed (pictured above, with life-partner and performance artist Laurie Anderson), or go tromping around the boardwalk covering up just enough body parts to not get arrested. New Artists Added to Siren Fest, After Party
Some new bands have been added to the lineup for the Village Voice’s Siren Festival: A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS, THEE OH SEES, and TINY MASTERS OF TODAY (who have a new album out). JUSTINE D. and DEADHEAT DJs were added to DJ as well. The Village Voice’s Siren Festival is happening at Coney Island this year on July 18, and is free, as usual. Siren Festival Returns to Coney Island!

Everyone thought last year was the last, but the Village Voice has announced that the Siren Festival will return to Coney Island this summer! The free festival, although plagued by crowds and crappy sound, is still a favorite New York tradition of many. Who can turn down free music at Coney Island??
